From: Tattie Bogle Date: 27 Dec 12 - 05:37 AM The one I really like is "Da Day Dawn" - a tune that comes from the Shetland tradition of playing it around the streets of Lerwick as the New Year comes in. But it has had words set to it by Jane Hazelden, and you can hear it here, sung and played (on fiddle) by Mairi Campbell of The Cast, accompanied by her husband, Dave Francis (guitar). On New Year's Day, we'd just be past the week of fowl, usually "Eight maids a-milking". There would still be plenty of reason to sing Twelve Days of Christmas, or any other song about the period rather than the single night/day. And indeed, winter songs. E.g. the two well-known sleighing songs might fit, depending on the mood of the session. And although Allison is to modest to mention it, on the Mudcat Seasonal CD "Until the Dark Time Ends", you'll find the song the CD title was taken from: - The Comfort of Singing Voices, by Alouette Iselin, performed on the CD by the Animaterra Women's Chorus, artistic director Allison Aldrich. Some songs take me weeks just to figure out the chords, and then months of practice before I would sing them with anyone else in the room. But there are other songs that I've learned in a day. The easy learners are usually popular songs (which may be what the NYD thread was looking for). Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is the most recent example. I had heard it for years but never even sang along with it. Then one day I found some new lyrics that I liked. I learned it in less than an hour, sang it all day, and performed it for friends the next day. |

I am quite an experienced singer but I do want some songs that people can pick up easily. I'm going to sing here we come a wassailing as it seems wassailing covers new year! I couldn't get on the mudcat cafe site for days. Every time I clocked on it I just got the word "bonk"!!! Did anyone else have that happen?? I will investigate the songs people have suggested! In Devon they take this one stage further and celebrate it on what would have been old Twelfth Night, round about 17th January. So it may be a little too early to wassail on New Year's Day, but it's certainly not too late. Marje |

Persian/Kurdish New Year is in March. Khmer and South Indian New Years are in April. Jewish New Year is in September. Ancient Rome had New Year in March. The Vietnamese seem to have two of them, a lunar and solar one. So for the Gregorian calendar to adopt January 1 as New Year, it had to go against a lot of traditions to the contrary. |

If we ignore the sales pitch about Januarius, god of gates, presenting a better starting point for the year, he was probably just shortening a year that would otherwise have become immense due to his date correction. But both the winter solstice and the spring equinox had already been in use as end or start of the year for specific uses before that, and this continued after his time as well. Christianity then added I don't know how many possible starting dates for the year, either by making the years start with the most important holy day (or a day before that when preparations started), or a day when the story of Jesus Christ began, which could be his birth or the day his mother had to have conceived him or ... I've never seen anything about the Gregorian calender that explicitly cleared up Fifty Ways to Count your Ages, but in English speaking countries there seems to be a general view that this was one effect of that calender reform. It may be that this was a side-effect, maybe caused by England sticking to the older calender, possibly with one of the other ends of year. Those countries that accepted the new calender earlier might, independent from that, by that time all have settled on the 1 January New Year, so that for England that change would have seemed to come with the calender reform. I learned it from a Christmas album with Robbie O'Connell (Aengus? Unsure of the spelling) last verse has women and men rather than just young men, and I like it that way, so I've inserted it into the lyrics (has the melody there, too) that come from the DT: ALL HAIL TO THE DAYS All hail to the days that merit more praise Than all the rest of the year, And welcome the nights that double delights As well for the poor as the peer! Christmas isn't actually over, and the theme of the three kings provides the chance to sing lots of good songs in Em and Am, and the chance to get the drums out. It may seem quite short, but with the musical arrangement, it is sung several times over, bringing in different parts at different stages. The basses have the easiest (dumbest?) part, as all they do is sing long "dum"s!
