Can anyone recommend any folk songs that would be good for a singing session on New years day. It would be nice if they had lyrics that were to do with looking forward to reflecting on the new year in some way.

Come Let Us Anew: http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=140327
More on it buried in this thread: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=42108

Another song that I find fitting is "When All Men Sing" (if you'll pardon the male-centrism), written by Keith Scowcraft and Derek Gifford:
http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=13199
YouTube: Mike Nicholson & co.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK7t27lfDN4

There's also "I Wish New Year's Was Twice a Month" (sheet music in the Lester S. Levy Collection, I believe).

The January Man.

When you run out of New Year songs, and if you live where it gets cold, how about songs which are wintry but not Christmasy?

Winter Wonderland
Let it snow
Baby, it's cold outside (a challenging number)

Ring It In, Ring In the New Year ----a round, even.   And easy to learn.

The Goldfish Am A Funny Bird--tune of Auld Lang Syne.   Fun to sing. Admittedly, rather lacking in earth-shaking importance.   But really easy words.

My favorite of this genre by far is Ian Robb's "Song for A New Year".    Just incredibly touching--and ever timely

The one I really like is "Da Day Dawn" - a tune that comes from the Shetland tradition of playing it around the streets of Lerwick as the New Year comes in. But it has had words set to it by Jane Hazelden, and you can hear it here, sung and played (on fiddle) by Mairi Campbell of The Cast, accompanied by her husband, Dave Francis (guitar). To hear the tune as a solo instrumental, check out Aly Bain on Youtube.

http://uk.myspace.com/mairicampbelldavefrancis

"Deck the Halls" is as much about New Year as Christmas (or Yuletide, so you could probably do that one too.

"A Guid New Year to Ane and A"

A YouTube search for that finds a guy playing it (none too clearly) on the piano, with "related" links to a whole bunch of Khmer New Year songs - looks they make these as much a specialty as Scotland does:

nom mae tov sdey
plech komlos sbek kmao
sralanh neang chab tek kork
ber neang ban bong
chol chnam kroup khet

They're catchy.

We'll think on mony a year.

Hi,

Allison: That may depend on the interpretation of the "Yule" references in the lyrics.

On New Year's Day, we'd just be past the week of fowl, usually "Eight maids a-milking". There would still be plenty of reason to sing Twelve Days of Christmas, or any other song about the period rather than the single night/day. And indeed, winter songs. E.g. the two well-known sleighing songs might fit, depending on the mood of the session.

And although Allison is to modest to mention it, on the Mudcat Seasonal CD "Until the Dark Time Ends", you'll find the song the CD title was taken from:
- The Comfort of Singing Voices, by Alouette Iselin, performed on the CD by the Animaterra Women's Chorus, artistic director Allison Aldrich.
On Youtube, you can hear and see Noreen sing this song at the UK CD-presentation, currently at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWAQ9NhEupI.

I actually start singing WILD MOUNTAIN THYME the first day after the winter solstice.   I look forward to the warmer months that much, and starting with the first line, the song puts some hope in my heart during the dark, cold winter.

"Oh the summer time is coming."

I doubt that anyone on Mudcat has less musical training or skill than I. Some songs take me weeks just to figure out the chords, and then months of practice before I would sing them with anyone else in the room. But there are other songs that I've learned in a day. The easy learners are usually popular songs (which may be what the NYD thread was looking for). Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is the most recent example. I had heard it for years but never even sang along with it. Then one day I found some new lyrics that I liked. I learned it in less than an hour, sang it all day, and performed it for friends the next day.

thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am quite an experienced singer but I do want some songs that people can pick up easily. I'm going to sing here we come a wassailing as it seems wassailing covers new year! I couldn't get on the mudcat cafe site for days. Every time I clocked on it I just got the word "bonk"!!! Did anyone else have that happen??

I will investigate the songs people have suggested! Thanks again!

Wassailing, as in the sense of wassailing the apple trees or "apple howling", is associated with Twelfth Night or "Old Christmas". In Devon they take this one stage further and celebrate it on what would have been old Twelfth Night, round about 17th January. So it may be a little too early to wassail on New Year's Day, but it's certainly not too late.

Hi,

I don't think the association is all that universal. As far as I know, some wassail the apple trees as early as Christmas Eve. And indeed, some do on New Year's Morning.

Why do Christians have New Year at New Year?

Chinese New Year is in February. Persian/Kurdish New Year is in March. Khmer and South Indian New Years are in April. Jewish New Year is in September. Ancient Rome had New Year in March.   The Vietnamese seem to have two of them, a lunar and solar one.

So for the Gregorian calendar to adopt January 1 as New Year, it had to go against a lot of traditions to the contrary.

Indeed, Jack; especially as it screwed up the names of the last 4 months, so that December, from decem, Latin for 10, is now #12 ~~ likewise the 3 months preceding it, Sept = 7th, Oct = 8th, Nov = 9th, are now actually 9th 10th 11th.

Still, it's the way it is. I guess we have all learned to live with it without too much inconvenience - ?

Hi,

As I see it, the 1 January New Year was really set by Julius Caesar. If we ignore the sales pitch about Januarius, god of gates, presenting a better starting point for the year, he was probably just shortening a year that would otherwise have become immense due to his date correction. But both the winter solstice and the spring equinox had already been in use as end or start of the year for specific uses before that, and this continued after his time as well.

Christianity then added I don't know how many possible starting dates for the year, either by making the years start with the most important holy day (or a day before that when preparations started), or a day when the story of Jesus Christ began, which could be his birth or the day his mother had to have conceived him or ...

I've never seen anything about the Gregorian calender that explicitly cleared up Fifty Ways to Count your Ages, but in English speaking countries there seems to be a general view that this was one effect of that calender reform. It may be that this was a side-effect, maybe caused by England sticking to the older calender, possibly with one of the other ends of year. Those countries that accepted the new calender earlier might, independent from that, by that time all have settled on the 1 January New Year, so that for England that change would have seemed to come with the calender reform.

But why Christians have New Year at New Year? Well, as far as I know everybody has New Year at New Year.

Happy New Year's Eve, and don't forget to sing Tar Barrel in Dale,
                                                                Mysha

NEW YEAR (Jehanne Mehta)

The old year shakes his hoary head
For his time is nearly through
We will see him swiftly on his way
Sing a welcome to the new
Now the glass is turning
Set the boats a burning
New songs to be learning
New roads to be treading.

The January wind is come
To sweep old lines away
The new year comes with pen in hand
To write another play
Time's at a beginning
Set the wheels a spinning
New Kites to be flying
New links to be tying.

Now take your loved ones by the hand
For this I tell you true
The gladness of the passing year
Sheds a glow upon the new
Down the road together
Wind or bitter weather
New feats to be daring
New ale to be sharing.

Repeat verse 1.

I know this as DRIVE THE COLD WINTER AWAY, which is the name of the English Country Dance tune. I learned it from a Christmas album with Robbie O'Connell (Aengus? Unsure of the spelling) last verse has women and men rather than just young men, and I like it that way, so I've inserted it into the lyrics (has the melody there, too) that come from the DT:

ALL HAIL TO THE DAYS

All hail to the days that merit more praise
Than all the rest of the year,
And welcome the nights that double delights
As well for the poor as the peer!
Good fortune attend each merry man's friend
That doth but the best that he may,
Forgetting old wrongs with carols and songs
To drive the cold winter away.

Tis ill for a mind to anger inclined
To think of small injuries now,
If wrath be to seek, do not lend her your cheek,
Nor let her inhabit thy brow.
Cross out of thy books malevolent looks,
Both beauty and youth's decay,
And wholly consort with mirth and with sport
To drive the cold winter away.

This time of the year is spent in good cheer,
And neighbours together do meet,
To sit by the fire, with friendly desire,
Each other in love to greet.
Old grudges forgot are put in the pot,
All sorrows aside they lay;
The old and the young doth carol this song,
To drive the cold winter away.

When Christmas' tide comes in like a bride,
With holly and ivy clad,
Twelve days in the year much mirth and good cheer
In every household is had.
The country guise is then to devise
Some gambols of Christmas play.
Where women and men do best that they can
To drive the cold winter away

Gordon Bok/ Judy Goodenough's TURNING OF THE YEAR is a lovely example of what Caroline Paton calls "comfort songs" & goes with his HEARTH AND FIRE.

RING IN THE NEW YEAR round

Just plain winter songs go down well:
Dillon Bustin's MORE WOOD
WEE DRAPPIE O'T
A DRAM AFORE YE GO
Humorously: FROZEN LOGGER & Eileen McGann' SNOW SHOVELING SHANTY.

Singing in the new year myself,
Joanne in Cleveland where it is QUITE cold and likely to remain so!

Not this year, but other years our group has had a party on Jan 1st which we call the Three Kings party. Christmas isn't actually over, and the theme of the three kings provides the chance to sing lots of good songs in Em and Am, and the chance to get the drums out.

I call Jan 1st National Pointless Day, because there's no real reason to be off work.

Henryp mentioned, back in 2012, one of Alison Burns' songs: we learned another of her settings at one of her December workshops a few years back: it's from a poem by William Soutar (1870-1943)and she put the music to it, in 4-part harmony. It may seem quite short, but with the musical arrangement, it is sung several times over, bringing in different parts at different stages. The basses have the easiest (dumbest?) part, as all they do is sing long "dum"s!

OPEN THE DOOR FOR THE AULD YEAR
Open the door for the auld year,
It is the pairtin' time,
Open the door for the new year,
And let the bairn win hame.
Bundle your winter joy and grief
On the back of the year that's dune,
Open your hert for the new life
And let the bairn come in.
