Spring seems light years away! (I've always seen Palm Sunday to be a rather solemn occasion and the start of the momentous events of Holy Week. Today in church 49 verses of the Gospel were read with quiet sadness and respect. We weren't being joyous, instead we were feeling Jesus' pain and humiliation. Perhaps Easter Day is a more appropriate time for joy?) |

Both services start out with a joyous tone, and then end up very somber. Seems to reflect real life - it's never pure joy, and never pure sorrow. An she-ass, accomnoanied by a foal is what the Gospel says. Some translations call the foal a colt (which is not the normal term for a young donkey), but there's no suggestion Jesus is riding on the poor little thing. He's on the mother. |

Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 13 - 09:18 PM mg, the translation of the scriptures used in the Mass in the U.S. has been the same since 1999, but the Passion read on Palm Sunday changes on a three-year rotation - Matthew, Mark, and then Luke this year (same with a number of churches that use the Common Lectionary). There are differences in the text of these three "synoptic" (with one eye) Gospels, but the story is very much the same in all three. But yeah, sometimes it's ass, sometimes foal, sometimes colt. -Joe- |

But our church is sometimes a bit 'happy-clappy' so to my great disappointment we didn't sing 'Ride on, ride on in Majesty' or 'My song is Love Unknown', both of which I really like. The former was sung that evening on Songs of Praise on BBC TV, so I did at least hear it. We had some modern stuff instead. I suppose it's alright, and the vicar chooses it to attract the younger folk to church. However, there were only twelve of us there, nobody under about seventy, shivering with cold and watching our frozen breath rise like incense into the air! The sombre aspect for me is engendered by the fickleness of the crowd, "Hosanna!" one minute and "Crucify Him!" the next. Not to mention the shuttling backwards and forwards of Jesus between Herod and Pilate, the demands for magic tricks by the former and the mockery of the Roman guards. And Jesus knew He was to die, He had to master his terror and try to get some courage from somewhere. I find Holy Week a roller coaster of emotion, only feeling joy on Easter Day itself. |

Just deepest purple. So the sombre atmosphere is even reflected in the surroundings. |

Couldn't be happy on Christmas because before you know it Jesus had to die on the cross. We were so filled with misery in Lent that by the time Easter came around we couldn't shake it. I don't remember Easter as being all that happy or festive although we were told it was supposed to be. Honestly, there was one day a year that all misery was suspended, except for remembering your poor ancestors in the potato famine, and that was St. Patrick's Day. Lent was suspended. Friday was suspended if it happened on Friday. I actually like Good Friday. I take the day off and go to the stations of the cross in an old church in Astoria. You get a plenary indulgance if you go to the stations on Good Friday. I do it as an insurance policy every year. |

Last time I went, we concluded with a hug - the priest has been a friend for 30 years. I have to say that during my seminary days, Holy Week was spoiled somewhat by term papers and midterm exams. Term papers had to be in before we left for home Easter Sunday morning after Mass - so Holy Saturday was often an all-nighter for me. When you think back on the "good old days" of high school and college, do you ever remember how stressful it was? I like Holy Week much more now that I'm an adult with no responsibilities (come to think of it, my income taxes are due soon....) Easter sunrise service on the shore of Lake Michigan, was always a memorable event for me (and I usually had my papers done by then). -Joe Procrastinator- |

I always say that religion is fine until you start bringing all that god stuff into it:-) At Catholic junior school I learned how to make a cross out of a palm leaf and that is a skill I retain to this day! But the memory I treasure most, mainly because it reminds me of my Dad, is the Orthodox tradition of hitting people on the head, very gently of course, with twigs of pussy willow. What I cannot remember is the phrase chanted while performing the ritual. Must have been either Russian or Slavonic and was just two words repeated. Started with something that sounded like "veldaclos". May be a faulty memory anyway but can anyone cast any light on it? Joe maybe? Cheers DtG |

Musically speaking, I like "Gloria Laus and Honor tibi sit" as both the Gregorian chant and the lively verion performed by Royston and Heather Wood but the loose translation "All glory, praise and Honour to thee Redeemer King" has always been a bit dire in any church I have been in. Maybe it is the congregations I have been in but it tends to be slow, timidly sung and disorganised when the people at the front of the procession get out of time with those at the rear. |

And yes, I suppose it's true that one can find stupidity, obnoxiousness, intolerance, and supremacist leanings in all groups - and perhaps in all individuals, including ourselves.
