Subject: Thought for the Day (Nov 5) From: Peter T. Date: 05 Nov 99 - 10:25 AM One of the most terrific current movies that no one is seeing is Lucie Aubrac, because it is French. It tells the true story of a woman in the French Resistance who snatched her husband (sentenced to death for being part of the Resistance) out of a Gestapo Prison through courage, and a lot of cunning. Something about the film puzzled me, and it was only when I spoke to the other person who I know has seen the film, a woman, that I figured it out. It is the only film I have seen almost ever that is about two married people who love each other so strongly that they will do anything to be reunited. Even more than that, the film never talks about it at all -- everyone just assumes that this makes sense, is quite normal. (A French film too!). It is not even as if the war is the binding force between them: it is as if it is something pesky in the way -- that if they can survive, everything will go back to what it was. It was nice to see marriage treated as something strong and fine for a change. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Nov 5) From: katlaughing Date: 05 Nov 99 - 10:48 AM That it is, Peter. I just watched a special, ont he Learning Channel, I think, the other night, called Ghost Waters. While treated a bit dramatically, they did tell one story about the wife of a Confederate soldier. He was being held in prison, during the war, on an island off the coast of Boston. She disguised herself as a Union soldier, made her way to him. They would have been fine, were well on their way to getting free, but they wanted to set some charges to destroy the prison, on their way out. They were caught, she grabbed an officer's gun. In the struggle she accidentally killed her husband and, she was later hung on the island, for his murder. Talk about the ultimate price of irony. Obviously she did love him very much. She begged them not to hang her in the Union soldier outfit, so allowed her to wear a long black cape. It is said that she haunts the place forever in the cape. |
