My mom gets all kinds of magazines in the mail. She reads them and then passes them on to me. Today I spent some time sorting through them. I have some that I want to keep or read and the rest are bagged up to go to the House of Care (where I stayed during my chemo). There are several bags!

I also completely cleared our kitchen table, wiped it down and will have it set for dinner (the first time in a long time that the table has been really clear). I love it this way...here's hoping to maybe I can keep it that way for longer than last time!

Did basic chores, played outside with Jeremiah, finished a book (added it to the yard sale pile) and have overall enjoyed the day. :)

Dorothy in particular, but everyone in general, do you ever read the Rodale publications or web site? Here is a piece about detoxing the house. Many things you may already know or have modifications on.

Thanks, SRS, I will look at that tomorrow. I have read MANY books on the subject of healthy homes. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp has huge sections on line as well. And their man who lectures on the subject, and old friend, came to Bancroft when I was there. He built the first low cost safe housing dev in Canada, a very complex project. They learned as they went along, with the participation of those who would live there.

I certainly should have known better than to let R use the Alkyd paint but my brain is not always functioning at full speed. It was less bad today. We may cover it with a low VOC primer.

Good day. By 10 am I had cleared emails, responding as necessary and had brekkie. Then I loaded the car and went off to the Mill, stopping for groceries en route. Back to cabin and fed critters - 3 of 5 refused bottle. May be weaned? I'll try again tomorrow. Then lunch break. THEN, I washed the bathtub with a paste of baking soda and peroxide - as read on line. It got almost all the orange off (from the orange water) in about 15 minutes! THEN, feeling energized by that success, I went out and braved the horror of all that stuff in the garage. Amazingly managed to package about a third of the mess along one wall - not nearly as daunting as I had feared. Filled car again. Also have a couple piles of boxes of mags and books, by the big door. Still have lots of glaze materials - several hundred pounds! and pottery in various stages on non-completion.

May take time tomorrow, if it is a good day, to trim those pots and see if I have a kiln load. Make more if I can and need. Hopefully, I will be able to pack up more stuff also. Those plastic bins are so much easier for odd stuff; if I need to go into the city, I may buy a few more. May need to fetch R for our Friday night music - dear Bill Garrett!

Starting to feel this move will happen in a timely fashion. Hoping tomorrow is another "good day".

I was talking to a friend today and explaining why I hold onto the large futon in my front room - and have almost talked myself into selling it. Almost. It would make a lot more room around here.

This evening I found more obsolete electronics, they are everywhere! Three portable cassette players - I'll check eBay to see if there is a market (amazing what people still buy) or if they should be donated to Goodwill or go straight to the e-waste bin. I have tons of cassettes still, but will play them through the large player to transfer them to CD or DVD. There is a shelf in my office with several old once-high-end devices that I'll have to take a look at. I may be able to use a few of the larger ones with the computer.

Friday at last. This weekend might mark the time to start picking wild grapes, and it is almost time to make zucchini pickles.

I have worked out a new route to my daughter's house - from home I drive straight up an Interstate highway, merge to another one, and it's simple. But so full of traffic jams this time of day. Since I'm leaving from work I'm trying something new. May be just as crowded, but will be a different view. I'll drop off this big game cabinet and be so happy to be rid of it!

Down another pound.

It was a lovely drive north to the next county, entirely on boulevards that are interconnected. The road changes names three or four times but you don't need to do anything to get from one to the next, and it ends up literally a block from her house at the upper end of it. I passed through some of the hallmark landscape of this area, called the "Cross Timbers," tall vine-covered trees that grow atop a north-south running striation of limestone - these dense forests (also called "cast iron forest") that people don't think of when they think of Texas and prairies. I'm in an area that is flatter, more open prairie (if you could still see the land for the houses).

That game cabinet carcass was wheeled into the house by three beefy roommates and put in the corner where it looks right at home, and they were discussing ideas to modify it for use. Good use for it (and she said if her brother wants it back he can just ask.)

One of the roommates will move out in December to go to graduate school, and he'll take his living room futon with him. That serves as their couch, so Moonglow said that come December if I still have my futon she'll have a need for it. Sounds good.

In the last three weeks I've heard about 4 co-workers who live on my side of town - it has been years I'm over here that anyone has been nearby (lots of folks commute from Dallas, others from the part of Fort Worth near to the university, and the lion's share live in Arlington itself). Inspiration to put the house in order and have guests over!

Kat, I hate to see your words lost - you write so rarely now. Compose in Word and cut and paste!

It's hot, but I'm working outside - 20 minutes in, 20 minutes out. Staggering my time in the heat with the shady porch or the house. I want to get some of this finished before the mosquitoes come out. I've uncovered much of the lost crop of sweet potatoes that came back as volunteers this year. I'll put down compost then mulch and water deeply.

Tonight, laundry, working in the closet in my office and the sun room (to see how much more stuff I can put away). And clearing kitchen clutter.

Well...

I de-accessioned a 5-1/2 foot tall inflatable Scotch whisky bottle today...

And I acquired (for free) a nice, solid wood 2-shelf cabinet with a butcher block top. It's temporarily being stored in my neighbor's barn while I figure out what to do with it.

Actually, while getting it out of the back of the car, I made the first decision -- it needs castors. And while telling Tom about it, I figured out where to put it. (Next to the dishwasher, especially after we get that electrical outlet finished.) All I have to do now is empty the dresser that's there now and figure out not only what to do with it, but what to do with what's in the drawers.

Nothing in life is simple...

Thanks, Maggie. I know I've promised to rewrite or re-do/add-on to a lot, lately. i could use Dragon, but typing does keep my hands from becoming stiff and even more sore,,but better that than locking up. I think the Morgan stories will b e easiest with Dragon and yes, I shall remember to copy.Time for my kitchen spa "shower." Later dears.

We do need some more Morgan stories! His puppy must be growing a lot - does he bring his dog over to visit with your dogs?

I finished the work on the sweet potatoes and I did more work on laying out the various soaker hoses. I've given away some produce (tomatoes and eggplant) and tomorrow I'll do some more of it. I need to mow out front and the back, trim, etc. It's getting hot enough now that I won't need to mow as much.

My office is about half-way sorted, so this evening I'll work on the messy side. I found a use for one notebook (full of plastic page cover sheets) in my box of office supplies for the Salvation Army, but the rest of the stuff is ready to go. I need to fill another for pickup next Friday (along with the love seat.)

After a day working in the yard like yesterday I slept hard and woke late. It felt wonderful! If you ever listened to the Covert Bailey lectures (sports medicine topics on PBS) he talked about giving your body a day off between workouts. I'll take it a bit easier out there today. :)

My goal - to have the house looking so good inside and out that I don't need to apologize for the clutter. That'll keep me busy!

Car is emptied of everything but sunglasses, handicapped placards and the spare key, and swept out, wiped down, and bumperstickers removed from the back window. Tomorrow I trade it in on what is, for all practical purposes, a brand new 2002 Subaru Outback. (Even the catalytic converter was replaced.)

My hair is sweat-sopped and my forehead dripping. Got to retrieve the rest of the stuff from the car that I set down on the deck.

Made a large batch of kale and white bean soup with chorizo a little while ago. It's going to be really good for supper, but I rather wish I'd planned vichyssoise or something else cold. Ah well, what I had was kale from the farmers' market, a can of white beans and a ring of chorizo. It'll be good tonight anyway, then I'll freeze it for a more a weather-appropriate time and figure out what more weather-appropriate meal to make tomorrow when it's supposed in the 90s (F.). I think it's only in the 80s today, but it feels like the 90s when you're in a car even with the windows open.

I'm making a grocery run in a few minutes - I'm out of provolone and I'd like a homemade pizza tonight, using one of those small crusts I made last week.

More e-waste has been identified in the office closet, this time, Kodak carousel slide trays. I have extras because I brought some home after a professor cleaned out his office - I still have a lot of slides, but I need to be putting them in archival sheets. The new (to my house) light table is now in the closet on the shelf emptied of slide trays. I brought home two, I may sell one. I also have a metal box with a storage tray for slides that has a bulb and plastic tray - you slide out the storage box and prop up the plastic tray with rows for slides and there is a cord inside also for plugging it in. I could put the slides in that storage box into the archival folders I have now and get rid of that box.

Astonishingly, I found that those portable cassette player recorder devices I stumbled upon yesterday still sell on eBay. As easy as they are to pack and ship, I think I'll list these. I'm consolidating some of the stuff from the closet - either onto the shelves in my office where the music from my dad's estate is stored, or on a small metal shelf that I emptied when I got rid of all sorts of paper. Now that will be all containers of photo prints or slides, plus the projector and few slide trays I am keeping. I've just about re-purposed all of the shelves in that closet, and I'm going to keep everything up off the floor. It looks much larger that way.

It's hot again today, but I'm going out to work soon. I'll mow while it's still bright and before the mosquitoes appear.

Amazing, there is a steady trade in old Kodak carousel slide trays on eBay. I guess I'll throw a few in that direction and see what happens.

I made a lot of progress but I did end up leaving some papers sitting out. But you know how stacks of papers sometimes get dropped in boxes then stacked somewhere else? I went through several of those kinds of boxes that had been stacked in the office closet. I've shredded and recycled many pounds of paper this weekend. Next comes the filing of the things that need keeping.

I found more three-ring notebooks, but it turns out a co-worker can use them, so I'm taking them back to the library tomorrow. :)

I'm formulating long-range moving plans for various sets of shelves and cabinets. Some changes hinge on having a contractor come in and fill the "den" floor with 6" of concrete to level the house to one story. The six inch step down actually counts as a second story on the flood insurance policy. More importantly, it counts as a major impediment to moving around large pieces of furniture. Up and down over one step is a pain in the ass.

There is a shelf in the closet that is a free-standing black wire type, and I have several others in various sizes, all chrome, around the house. With that floor finished I can move a large cabinet from the sun room to the living room and turn my sun room into more of a pantry area. And free up space in the kitchen.

Monday morning dreaming. Working at home today, I'll mow the front at lunch. I got sidetracked and didn't mow yesterday evening as planned.

This morning I'm sorting through many of the papers I brought home from work over the last few years. A lot of it is to be recycled or shredded, some will go back to the office. I expect that in early July our reorganization will be complete and I'll be working at the office most of the time, so I need to get all of this out of my house.

The stack of paper on my secondary work surface is getting lower. I've weeded a lot of my old academic stuff - when I look at it and have no interest in revisiting the topic or in reacquainting myself with all of the background material to bring myself back up to speed, it's time to toss it. I have moved on to different intellectual pursuits. Holding onto everything can slow down that forward movement.

Yesterday was a day of rest - except for computer and reading. Two days of moving totally did me in and I did not do most of the lifting. R and two young lads loaded the trailer, truck and car - more times than I counted. I was not warned of this impending activity and had very little packed in boxes so I was pushed to pack as fast as I could both in house and in studio. Then sat back while they unloaded. Very long days but all a blur. We made it to bed by 1 am.

So yesterday, R went off, in my car, to set the guys to working on stuff at the Mill. At about 11 pm, I phoned and he was just leaving to take them back to the city. Still not back and my checkbooks are in the car and there is a bill that is going to be overdue. I rather wish I had insisted he pick up me and the laundry on the way. Hind sight.

Today I have been packing boxes and more boxes. At least it is cool in the studio and, as long as the door is closed, not many mosquitoes. Very hot day and I kind of wonder at SRS getting things done "before the mosquitoes..." We will not miss the mosquitoes here at the cabin. There is no "before..." They are ubiquitous and constant.

Hopefully, I can have some peace until the last big stuff gets moved on Saturday. If I ever get my car back, I can move what is packed, by the car load. Also get the new tires that are finally in; we now have a not too slow leak in one tire. Carrying a little compressor in the car to keep it from going flat!

It will definitely take me the rest of my life to get sorted out again. As I have packed in order of essentialness, the boxes are now mostly in that order. Realizing that most people move to a place that is more or less ready. I wonder if this will ever be ready. R says they "got a lot done yesterday". Will there at least be a hose to the kitchen? The paint odour is not too bad but I will set up the screen tent so I have a place to be away from fumes, mold and dust.

Mosquitoes don't fly around in 98 degree weather in the middle of the day - they come out as the sun sets and the humidity rises. When it is most comfortable for people, it is most comfortable for mosquitoes.

Tomorrow I'm taking a bucket full of produce to work to "sell" to my coworkers - to support the library association. Last year I contributed about $125 to the fund by taking in produce twice. I did a lot of arm twisting on the big tomatoes last year. :) I'm taking more eggplant this time, a few tomatoes, some potatoes, some peppers. I need to remember make my lunch before I leave the house - a tomato and a cucumber for a salad for me. If it is already made I won't accidentally sell it.

I took some binders and plastic notebook pages (that you slide your paper into) to a coworker who needed them. I don't know if these pages were bought by my for a project I've long since forgotten, or if I brought them home from work to do something I no longer remember. They're now out of the house.

Looking forward to Friday and getting this loveseat out of the way. I have one box of donation stuff, I told them there might be two. I'll have to see if I can find more donatables around here. I found a backpack purse I never use because the design wasn't as good as I hoped for. I could look in that direction - donate clothes and unused handbags. I have a few of those. I bought a couple of women's suits a few months back when I was at the highest weight I'd ever been - it was so depressing to buy women's size 16 that I jumped on the idea of alternate day fasting right after that. I'm now easing into size 12s as some of the 14s become too big. I'll send those two suits to the Salvation Army (and get a tax deduction, to be sure, but they're out of here and can make someone else happy, not make me depressed!)

Dishes and laundry are done. My fridge is bursting with all fresh veggies and fruit. I stopped going to Weight Watchers as my motivation and budget are lacking. I did find a program online that I like where I can track my calories, carbs, protein and fat (it graphs out what I've had each day..pretty interesting....I need to increase my protein by quite a bit apparently). So....my motivation in the weight loss department isn't really lacking, it was more with the WW program. It's not been the same (for me) since they changed to the Points Plus garbage. That just never sat well with me. *Shrug* I continue to be thankful for my body that alerted me to something that was majorly wrong very early...no matter the size. :)

Big storms are headed this way and even more so on Friday (tornado talk is now being discussed for this area...happens every few years). With that being said, I always try to have everything taken care of that involves power. For whatever reason, being stuck with dirty dishes for days on end (due to lack of power/water) makes me cringe in a big way.

The annual yard sale is looming ever closer and I seem to keep seeing things around here that I no longer need or use. I wonder what the heck I was thinking when I purchased some of this stuff. Crazy. Pete and I were talking just this morning about how much our shopping habits have changed. I don't think I've been to the nearest mall in well over 2 years. I haven't bought anything at full retail (meaning I hit the thrift shops/yard sales) in a long time (unless it's groceries/toiletries/cleaning stuff). The exception might be about a month ago when I spent $150.00 on new fans for the house. They were a NEEDED and WANTED item. Even my fabric addiction has been put on hold until I use up a good portion of what I have (exception..MAJOR sale in Mifflinburg coming up and I've been saving all my change for a YEAR for this event). Perhaps some wrapping of coinage will be in my future for later this afternoon.

The county wide cancer survivor celebration is taking place in a restored theater this evening. Jeremiah and I are going. Both of us in ovarian cancer awareness garb. Jeremiah has a little white t-shirt that sports a teal awareness ribbon and says, "I Wear Teal For My Mommy."   My shirt is white and has a teal awareness ribbon and says, "Supporting Those Who Are Fighting, Admiring the Survivors and Honoring the Taken." Add multiple pins and teal bracelets and you'll have me! :)

Have a great day everybody!

Michelle, that critical mass if unneeded or outgrown stuff that results in a garage sale is interesting. It can attract more items to the sales stash. I hope your sale day doesn't correspond with stormy weather!

Your cancer survivor celebration sounds like a great family event.

Much of DOMA was overturned. Yes!

Hiya,

Parents came back from Spain. Couple of thoughtless comments re: why they weren't taking/didn't take me (see below). Merlin (dog) came over too.

They'd brought a Robert Johnson cd. I love RJ & would love to visit his crossroads someday were there provision there, but few seem to know what I mean.

I had the support on the side of my wheelchair removed, foot plates raised etc. – I seem to sit better & straighter without the side thingy, but i'll keep it off till I go over my parents' to make sure. Usually I go through a lot of pain, but I haven't been; the side thingy had been jabbing right into my kidneys!

Yesterday was Tom's and my 31st wedding anniversary and the weather was very similar to that day 31 years ago -- overcast, very humid, scattered showers until it settled into some serious rain -- except 31 years ago it was reversed.

So I didn't get much accomplished around the house unless you count trying to extricate the meat from a very hard shelled lobster before breakfast so I could make the lobster salad (and get into the fridge for the flavors to marry before dinner) for lobster rolls. Lots of meat in that 1-1/2 lb. lobster, though, making it an even more economical splurge. Got two rolls apiece out of it with enough salad left for a lunch today of one each, so that 7 buck lobster equalled about $78 worth of lobster rolls if we'd eaten them at a restaurant. Our anniversary champagne is pricing itself out of our budget as well -- settled for a Spanish cava that was okay but not great. (And this reminds me that I have to write it into our anniversary book -- I've dated and saved our 2 anniversary corks a year for the past 32 years; we celebrate two anniversaries a year -- our wedding anniversary and the anniversary of the night we met and then, a year later, decided to marry.)

Took Tom for his first ride in my "new" car to Newick's on Great Bay for buck oysters for lunch. Alas, his vision yesterday was so bad he really couldn't get a decent look at the car, even from the inside. Then we went to Flag Hill Winery for a tasting and my birthday 25% off one bottle. And I've VERY pleased to find that they've brought back Niagara from native grapes, a lovely fruity white that, to me, is the taste of summer.

So I'm making up today for my "sloth" (holiday!) of yesterday: laundry in, stack of weekly papers gone through, have to use up the last of the rhubarb by making another batch of cream cheese rhubarb bars. Later I have to do a bunch of errands (getting duplicate keys for the car, farmers' market for CSA share, picking up a gift card I should have received last week, etc.) over in the Exeter area.

Getting some stuff back into the car (and out of the living room!), too, today.

Just emptied the kitchen compost -- it's not just tickland out back, but mosquitoland as well, but the combination of tea tree oil and water that I sprayed on my feet and legs seemed to keep the mossies at bay, as well.

That lobster sounds great - I'm not a huge eater of it, it's a very rich seafood (or so it seemed, last time I ate very much of it). It's wonderful when you can make the specialty dishes yourself. I often order things in restaurants until I'm satisfied I've nailed all of the ingredients and can make it myself, then the next few times out I order some new thing I want to figure out how to make.

Working at home tomorrow so the Salvation Army folks can come by for the loveseat. It will be nice to not have to avoid it (I moved it to the living room myself so they don't have to go all over the house.) I have a box of office supplies and this evening I'm going to hang up and photograph those two womens' suits and add them to a box along with some other dress items I never use or no longer fit into.

This afternoon I finished work on a July meeting and reception, but it pushed something I want to work on back till tomorrow. Darn.

Homarus americanus is one of the major reasons I moved to New England. I love lobster but now, even at "close to the boat" prices, we don't have it often. Definitely don't order it out at restaurant prices. It's sacrilege to do more than boil it and add butter or mayo. A bit of finely chopped lettuce if you add mayo (as in "wet" lobster rolls -- "dry" lobster rolls have melted butter poured over lobster meat in the roll).

Not "Coney Island" hot dog rolls, either, but the kind indigenous to New England and "grilled" in a frying pan like grilled cheese.

We're having one each tonight for supper after I make the rhubarb bars which, believe it or not, I'm making right now...

Later,
Linn

Waiting on the Salvation Army this morning. Last night I filled a large shopping bag with closet items. The two suits are barely or never worn, but way too big now. Belts, shirts, a purse I never use, and a pair of dressy shoes that feel good but are out of style and I've never found an occasion to wear them. Time to say "enjoy your next home."

Looks like some canning may happen this weekend.

Hiya,

I did. Also started on tablets cos when/if I/we go out we can't take hoists due to something to do with insurance.

Getting on fine w/o side thingy. Suited me when I needed it years ago, obviously doesn't now. Feel much more relaxed, much happier. Won't bother with one on next chair. Always used music to deal with pain/anxiety before. Will carry on with that of course.

The dr. said the problems I've been having are real & to do with cp. I always suspected that but it was nice to hear it from someone w/o it who had no real idea what it was/is. If I had £1 for every time I'd been told it was in my head i'd be able to pay for 24hr care w/o any need to live here, a.

Woke up this morning (ba doom, ba doom) after starting on said tablets – where was the pain that seems to have a separate existence from its owner??
Where was the crying cos I was absolutely gagging for the loo what felt like every 5 secs, etc.

Pain done gone!

This has never happened before.

You can never have too many notebooks. I love them. Always get paperblanks/journals as gifts whether I need them or not.

I still have plenty of notebooks, but a box of office supplies left the property along with everything else this afternoon. I'm glad you were able to fix your chair! (Speaking of health-related equipment, we haven't heard from Susan and her backdoor ramp lately - I imagine she's racing up and down it by now, since it isn't covered with ice or snow!)

I'm waiting to hear about some job reshuffling at work - the announcement should come soon, perhaps late next week. And with it should come an improvement in pay. I have projects lined up (after the credit card is paid off) and the first big one is fixing the floor in the den so I can put my furniture anywhere in the house I goddamn want to without reference to an idiotic 6" step that was so trendy in the 1970s (the sunken den look - resulting in more stubbed toes and accidental stepping off of that edge than I can remember).

I was going to go to a play tonight with my friend Susie, but she wasn't home when I went to pick her up, and the dog wasn't barking, so I think she must have forgotten and gone out with one of the kids. Her vehicle was still there, so someone else was driving. I decided not to go by myself, so I'm puttering here getting ready to make some pickles. The tomatoes are needing canning also.

I've cleared off the kitchen table (finally), have cleared up around the kitchen in general, done the laundry, and will spend time this evening photographing and listing eBay stuff to get more items out of the house soon.

Started another large bag of clothes that are too large. I'm at the half-way point as far as the weight I wanted to lose, so there will conceivably be a lot more garments to go into that bag than the 3 or 4 pairs of slacks this evening.

Pickles in the fridge overnight in salt and water. And I'll probably can some diced tomatoes tomorrow after the pickles are processed. I know summer is here when the canning gear comes out.

It was really too hot and humid here to do anything, but I did it anyway.

Got the forsythia transplanted (so I can use the huge bucket to transport goat manure), planted the last of the campion, got the white chair up into summer lounge-land under the hemlocks behind the back bed, emptied the kitchen compost, and -- ta dah! -- got my bobble-headed moose ensconced on the dash of my new car (and a few more things out of the living room and into the boot).

Took care of some PMFF board biz, too.

The nap didn't work.

Gotta make supper even though the weather's oppressive.

Linn, I should have done more work in the yard (I mixed up some of the foliar feeding mix and sprayed early), but I canned today. I envy you all of those big conifers and the garden furniture to set out under them. I've been working on growing some heat-tolerant pines here, and I'm thinking it's almost time to find a concrete bench for under the vitex in the front yard. I'll do a little weeding out front this evening and I have some mulch I want to spread so I don't have to look at the bag any more. I have to mow in the front again tomorrow, because I don't feel like pulling out the mower tonight.

I do the canning in small batches - 5 or 6 jars at a time, and today there are a dozen pints of diced tomatoes and six jars of zucchini bread and butter pickles cooling on my kitchen counter. As I worked I had the computer/televison set up and streamed the two episodes of Inspector Lewis that played on PBS last week. I was going to tape them but somehow ended up taping the same thing I watched [doh!]. Good thing PBS streams for a few weeks after a program. I cleaned as I worked and came up with a kitchen looking even better than when I started. And it smells SOOOOOOO good in here! I could buy organic canned tomatoes and save a lot of time, I suppose, but I enjoy the garden and the process and this is a great gift to my future self.
