Since I strongly suspect the original poster is female - if she does have an enlarged prostate gland then I would encourage her to see her doctor as soon as possible.

Wesley, I take it you would not recommend Atkins for anyone with an enlarged prostate gland!

Atkins worked for me once but the weight came back because I didn't stick with it. "Diets" by definition tend to be short term solutions. What worked better for me was a grain free diet - it's been more of a life style change that a temporary diet. But what works for me may not work for you. Everyone is different. Whatever you choose - good luck.

One thing I noticed about Atkins - after a couple of days it seemed like I was peeing all the time. So water loss was a big part of it. Your mileage may vary.....

certain metabolisms require high fat foods..mine does..I have success on it in that I stabilize my weight as opposed to losing now...I have to tighten it up to maximum discipline and eat some very high fat foods..bacon is magic for me..for the scale to drop at all. Any other way of eating I would be totally diabetic and weigh a lot more than I do...

Have your insulin and blood sugar levels checked. Some metabolisms do great on high carbs and it will kill other people. Read about metabolic body typing..forget the name..not blood type..metabolic type. If you have certain metabolisms you have to eat certain ways..other people being successful on other plans have absolutely no relevance to what you need to do. And if you are a metabolic type it is a lifelong requirement..you don't lose weight and go back to eating high carb if your body can not handle it.

Cut down on the bread, pasta and white rice.

More vegetables and fruit (no avocados), some meat and fish (salmon is high cal) or beans (but not baked or refried) for protein.

BUT BE GUIDED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN ! Dieting is tricky. Diving headlong into some publicized diet (Adkins or whatever) might put you on a see-saw (Megan L, above).

CS the problem with any DIET is that it can end up creating a see-saw of weight loss and gain, there have also been some concerns in the UK recently about the dangers of a high protein diet that lacks in other things this article seems quiet reasoned.

Perhaps a more sustainable approach would be to keep a food/drink diary (an honest one ) for a week or two then look at your calorific intake balanced with nutrient requirements. The secret with exercise is to find something you actually like and can do, that will be different for each person.

Developing a healthy love for yourself can also help, think about it if you love someone you want what is best for them. Therefore you want to eat healthier so they are healthy and happy. In all things balance

Has anyone here had experience with doing a low carb / Atkins style diet? I'm seriously overweight (dress size 22 last time I checked) and have been for about four years now. I'm also now 41, so need to sort it out before hitting middle-age and those dreaded hormones!

Currently I'm a wholefood vegetarian, but even 'healthy' eating isn't enough for me to start shedding weight, so despite my love of wholemeal pasta, rice and bread, I'm seriously considering exploring a low carb approach - either vegetarian (though I think that may be tricky) or pescetarian (eating fish but not meat) style.

Anyway, this isn't a request for general dietary or exercise advice (I know plenty about exercise and diet as I was a hard-core health freak during my 20's) I'm purely and simply interested in if you've tried low-carb and whether or not it's worked / is working for you!

Ta!
