If it's OK by you, I'd like to sign up for the 2:00 to 3:00 slot on Sunday in the Magic-Carpeted Room, to host a honky-tonkin' bluegrassin' country pickin' singin' & grinnin' party and song swap. What thinkest thou of this?

Thank you,

Joe, my return flight is at 12:50 on the first.

I would most happily not run more than two or three workshops!

We usually do circles the way you mentioned. but I thought I would have the words to a few songs that may not be well known. (Maybe to hand out after they are sung.

Hi, Fred - I'll put you in touch by e-mail with Deborah Sandler and Daniel Hersh and Shelby Solomon, who have usually been at least part of the group organizing our Shabbat service at Camp Harmony/New Harmony. Although workshops don't really begin until Saturday, it might be good to have Shabbat before or after dinner on Friday.
Since we meet at a Jewish camp, the cook always makes terrific challah for Shabbat - but we have to bring our own wine.

Workshops are fifty minutes long, but often extend to an hour. Certain workshops are two hours, but that's by exception.

As at the Getaway, song lyrics handouts are generally not considered kosher, but they sometimes work well for specific workshops. The general practice is to sing your own song in a workshop, and then the next person sings his/her own song. Songs with choruses work especially well.

I'm going to say that there are no copying facilities available for camper use. We do print copies of the daily schedule and there may be a scanner on that printer, but that's something I don't know. I do know that the printer is not offered for general use because we need to make sure it's available and has supplies enough for printing the schedule. So, figure that there is no copy making capability at camp.

I hadn't thought of arranging rides (and don't want to volunteer for the task), but I think we can use this thread quite nicely for that purpose. I'll re-post your request.

I'm going to say this with some trepidation because there are a number of exceptions, but in general, people don't host more than two or three workshops at Camp New Harmony. An exception is the daily caller's workshop in the dance hall, and standard things like the ballads workshops and the Triple Crown and (of course) Improv Chinese opera with Zurnas.

Joe, I would love to have Charlie Baum come, The Sabbath songs are usually sung during a meal and seated around a table. Logistically we were able to have a table at Getaway but it was w.o. food and that would be fine although grape juice or other beverage might be nice.Scheduled. Remind me to pick up grape juice and wine. There will be a separate Shabbat on Friday evening.

Across the Great Divide, Moving West: "Sweet Betsy from Pike", "Oregon trail","Augustus and Catherine (Bill Gallaher)" etc. Run it as a circle but with a handout. Scheduled. Waiting for agreement on Shabbat

I would be happy to run a G.A. Songbook workshop which could include Broadway. Again as a Circle. But it would be nice to have a Co-host (hort?)This often works well with a bunch of books from musicals and Tin Pan Alley songs, and I wouldn't be able to bring much from Seattle. Waiting for you and Marlene McCall to choose date/time/location

I figure an hour for the workshops?

Lastly, I will be arriving at noon Friday at Oakland, and I will need a ride out to camp and I will need to be at the Oakland Airport by 11:50 on the first. I don't know if you are the right person to arrange that.

Hope you had a Great Thanksgiving.

Fred

Joe, Fred Maslan here. I would like to do a workshop on Z'mirot shel Shabat or Sabbath Songs. Preferably Saturday around lunch. This is the workshop that Charlie and I did at Getaway. I'd also like to do a workshop "Crossing the great Divide" (heading west). and hopefully someone is doing the Great American Songbook.
Hi, Fred - I'm glad you're doing the Shabbat workshop because I was sorry to miss it at the Getaway. Can you bring Charlie Baum with you? I'm hoping there will also be a Shabbat gathering on Friday evening, but I don't have confirmation on that yet.
Please give more of a description of where you want to go with your "Great Divide" workshop.
Don't know of a Great American Songbook workshop yet, but we usually have songs from musicals. Wanna volunteer for a G-A-S workshop?

I usually do a beginning guitar workshop.
We'll be coming up Sunday afternoon, perhaps Monday or Tuesday some time from noon on would be good.
Please don't schedule me the same time as Laurie Vela, since I often do things with her at her workshops.
Also, Laurie and I usually do a Wild Women workshop, so if she's already mentioned that to you, please make it for some time late afternoon Sunday, or Monday or Tuesday. - Thanks, Hali

Hi Joe,
I'd like to host a workshop on shape note singing midday (12 to 1 or 1 to 2) on Monday.
(By host, I mean that I'll bring a stack of booklets with 32 songs from The Sacred Harp, that we've used in workshops at the SF Free Folk Festival many times.) Reuben's House would be nice for it, but other places would work too.

I see that you already have shape note singing scheduled on Sunday morning, but I won't be getting to camp until late Sunday afternoon, so perhaps someone else can lead that one? And anyway, you can never be too thin nor have too many shape note singing workshops!

Thanks,
Peter
Peter, we couldn't have shape note singing without you. I've moved it to Monday, Ruben's House, 1 to 2 PM.

Here's an e-mail from Robert:

Dear Joe,
Question: Do bears hibernate in the winter? Of course, I want to do some workshops at Harmony. Before I list a few of them, it was nice seeing you at the Getaway even if we didn't talk much. I'm sure we'll more than make up for it at Harmony.
Here are at least a couple of workshop suggestions, and I'll probably call you with some further ones down the road.
1. Songs and Stories of the Supernatural
2. Wit and Humor in Song and Story
3. Songs and Stories of the Bizarre

Peace and love,
Robert Rodriquez
1 and 3 combined and scheduled on Tuesday. 2 scheduled on Saturday.

Note that we don't have an instructor for the daily caller's workshop, and we may cancel it if Quena Crain doesn't come this year.

Please Be Considerate
  • WiFi: Smart phones eat wifi bandwidth -turn wifi off when you're not using it.
  • Parking: Be careful not to park in the way of the bus, and don't drive on camp roads unless you need to leave camp. If you must leave, drive in the same direction the bus goes, so you don't meet it head-on. If you DO meet the bus head-on, it's YOUR job to back up to a wide spot - and people will talk about you for years to come. There's lots of parking on the road to Upper Village, so park your car and take the bus.
  • As your mother told you a thousand times, be careful around vehicles that are backing up. Many people walk right behind the bus when it is backing at the dangerous turnaround at Ruben's house. Photos of people doing dumb things on the bus may be posted on the Internet [or not].

Please Be Considerate

  • WiFi: Smart phones eat wifi bandwidth -turn wifi off when you're not using it.
  • Parking: The bus needs lots of room. Be careful not to park in its way, and don't drive on camp roads unless you need to leave camp. If you must leave, drive in the same direction the bus goes, so you don't meet it head-on. There's lots of parking on the road to Upper Village.
  • As your mother once told you, be careful around vehicles that are backing up. Many people walk right behind the bus when it is backing at the dangerous turnaround at Ruben's house.

Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2013-14, Workshop Signups
From: Joe Offer
Date: 16 Aug 13 - 03:44 AM

Camp Harmony got its name because it used to meet at Camp Harmon, outside Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz mountains. The camp moved in about 2010 to Camp Newman, on the road between Santa Rosa and Calistoga. It then became Camp New Harmony. Camp Newman will hold 600 campers, but we usually have 300-350 participants. That gives us lots of extra room.
Camp Newman is in the middle of a huge reconstruction project that will replace most of the housing we use. This link will lead you to information about the first six of a projected 16 new cabins.
Once the 16 cabins are completed, the camp will construct a new dining hall. By the time we're old and grey, we will be able to camp in luxury.
In the meantime, it's still a wonderful place to have our camp.

This is the signup page for 2013-14. Please go here (click) for 2015-16

Thanks.

This is an edited thread for recording signups for workshops for the San Francico Folk Music Club's Camp New Harmony. The camp is held the week after Christmas every year at Camp Newman, on the road between Calistoga and Santa Rosa, California. The camp Website is http://sffmc.org/harmony_body.html.
Registration for camp opened September 15. Dates for camp are Friday, December 27, 2013, ending on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.

I'm going to use this as an edited thread to record pre-camp signups for workshops. We expect, as usual, that most people will sign up for workshops after they get to camp.

So, the idea is this: if you're attending camp and you'd like to lead a workshop, scroll down and post a message at the end of this thread with the following information:
    • Your name
    • Name of the workshop
    • Preferred time and day
    • Preferred location

I'll enter the information in the charts below. I can't guarantee time and location, but I'll do the best I can to balance things.

-Joe-
