This is the workshop leader signup sheet for 2016-17. For 2017-18, click here.

The San Francisco Folk Music Club's Camp New Harmony will be Wednesday, December 28, 2016 - Monday, January 2, 2017. Registration will open about September 1. Watch this thread for information and workshop scheduling.
This 6-day camp is held every year during the week after Christmas at URJ Camp Newman. The camp has been doing a lot of construction in 2016, and there will be plenty of new housing and even a few new music venues. Click here for a photo of the new construction.
Information at http://sffmc.org/ Hope to see you there!

This is an edited PermaThread®, to be used to schedule workshops for the 2016-2017 Camp New Harmony.
This thread will be edited by Joe Offer. Feel free to post to this thread, but be aware that all messages posted in this thread are subject to editing or deletion.

This is an edited thread for recording signups for workshops for the San Francico Folk Music Club's Camp New Harmony. The camp is held every year during the week after Christmas at URJ Camp Newman, on the road between Calistoga and Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco. Some 300 people will be there for 6 days of song and dance and whatnot.
The Camp New Harmony Website is http://sffmc.org/harmony_body.html.

To get an idea what the camp is all about, see the threads for previous years, crosslinked above.

I'm going to use this as an edited thread to record pre-camp signups for workshops. We expect, as usual, that most people will sign up for workshops after they get to camp.
So, the idea is this: if you're attending camp and you'd like to lead a workshop, scroll down and post a message e at the end of this thread with the following information:
    • Your name
    • Name of the workshop
    • Preferred time and day
    • Preferred location

I'll enter the information in the charts below. I can't guarantee time and location, but I'll do the best I can to balance things.
    -Joe Offer-

Kathrine- old-timey piano backup in the dance hall this year?

Hi, Everybody-
I'm watching these, but I won't post the schedule spreadsheets until I get back to civilization in early November. My Chromebook and hotel WiFi connections aren't reliable enough to do schedules.
I'm doing a bucket-list drive across the U.S. - probably a total of 10 weeks. I'm at 48 states on my lifetime list, and I expect to finish the list with Kansas and Oklahoma on this trip. I've also visited a number of lighthouses and national park facilities I hadn't seen before, and I went sailing on Chesapeake Bay.
So, doing the schedule spreadsheets for a camp run in late December, are not a priority for me now.
We have three nice new venues for camp this year - a large room in the health lodge, and two former offices in the dining hall.

And did I tell you about the new housing? It's all like the Field Cabins that we've had for the last 2 or 3 years.

See you soon at camp.

-Joe-

         thanks much,    Shoshanna

Thanks for setting this all up!

I've got several ideas for 'theme' songswaps: 'Songs of Rosalie Sorrels', 'Intimations of Mortality (But No Hymns or Morbid Songs!'), 'San Diego Boys: Songs of Jack Tempchin and Tom Waits', 'California Songs (But Please Not Hotel California!)'. I wouldn't expect to do all of them--I'm only going to be there through Saturday early afternoon, but wanted to toss them into the mix. Happy Travels! And thanks!

I can give you two sessions, Ray - but ya gotta choose for yourself. Take a look at the schedule charts. -Joe-

A request I got by email:

I'm planning to be at Harmony Wed- Thurs. I'd like to give a mini-concert on Thursday - maybe 2-3 or 3-4 ( if my one-day admission allows me to stay that late - don't know who to check with) in Ruben's Room or some other nice warm room where singers like to congregate.

Hi, Holly - I put you on Thursday, 5-6 PM, Ruben's House. Hope that's OK. -Joe-

“Christmas in the Trenches” is one of my all-time favorite songs. Unfortunately I won’t be able to stay for Robert’s workshop, as I’m only at camp Wednesday afternoon through my mini-concert, 5 pm Thursday.
My concert will concern how we make sense of what’s been going on, and will include my recent satirical songs as well as songs by Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, and Rhiannon Giddens.
    See you all soon!

    Harmonically,

    Holly

Not to worry, Holly. Bev and Jerry agreed to do "Christmas in the Trenches." It should sound wonderful in their trademark close harmony. My wife and I tried to sing it, but we kept tearing up.

We will arrive Friday 12/30 and Noah and I would be happy to host an "Andronico Oldtime Jam" that would run along the lines of our Odd Tuesday SF jams...inviting, friendly with old chestnuts mixed with a few lesser known tunes played at a nice loping pace.

Hi, Dinah & Noah - I put you in the front room, Saturday, 3-4. Please check the schedule and see if that's good for you. -Joe-

From Cris Johnson:

Joe not sure which distant shore you are at or what mountain top you are viewing but when you return home I would like to see if I can schedule 8 hours in the dance hall for the Swing night. I am pushing for Friday because that is usually the traditional time and all my volunteers are available. Looking for times around lunch time, low attendance periods where people can get there lunches and be waiting for rehearsal. Trying to get SFFC to make a commitment so I can get started. Last year I had 21 singers and it was pretty intense. Plus I contacted singers, made key recommendations for singers and song selections and collated all the music.

I'd like to do a workshop on "Simple Blues Shuffles," meeting every day (not at 8 am, though!!). We will just shuffle in some basic keys for about an hour and then try to apply the bass lines to songs throughout the day.

A blues book will be used to guide us.

We welcome more advanced players to come jam with us during the last half-hours of the workshops, once we've warmed up a bit.

Hi, Elly - How about noon-1 daily in the front room? It's in between meals. -Joe-
12/22 - I've once again changed my mind. I think I want to skip holding the blues class because it looks like there are other things happening, I don't know whether the class will hold up, and I'm not feeling up to par right now. If you can just remove it from the schedule I would appreciate it.

Workshop Venues

I had been delaying posting the schedule charts because I wasn't sure what venues were going to be used this year. The camp committee decided to use the same workshop spaces we used last year, so I will be posting the schedule grids in the next few days. Not now....I need a nap.
We have some new music spaces in the health lodge and in the offices off the dining hall, but the camp committee decided to keep those spaces open for unscheduled, informal music sessions. I disagree, but I wasn't at the meeting to express my disagreement.

So, here are the spaces we will be using (same as last year):

In the registration building (near camp entrance)
  • Mirrored Room - back of the building, nice in the morning for yoga & exercise sessions, holds about 20 people
  • Arts & Crafts - middle room in the building, reserved for kids' activities.
  • Front Room - nice room in the front of the building, seats 15-20 people.

Ruben's House Bus Stop
  • Ruben's House - comfortable living room with sofas and padded chairs, holds 20-25. Reserved for larger sessions.
  • Study Center - this space is set up as a library, holds about 30 people, a very comfortable place. Carpeted Room - our largest venue, except for Cabin 6. Holds about 30 people Heat seems to be working quite well this year.
  • Journalism Room - very small space behind the carpeted room. Can be cold and musty, but some people like it for small gatherings.
  • Yellow Room 22 - very nice space with a pole or something in the middle that makes it tight for more than ten people. Great for small jams.

  • Dance Hall - open for dance-related activities all day long.

  • Cabin 6 - a bit removed from other venues, but it's an easy trip on the bus. Holds 40 people.

    Hello again!

It may be a blessing to let the new rooms offgas for another year (in case they have new carpet or new paint.). I do look forward to peeking into them.

How about a one-hour Hanukah Party on either Friday or Saturday late afternoon to include the moment of sundown? I can host candle-lighting and dreidel games and lead some songs but I am not promising to make yummy treats for all. Folks of all religions and/or no religion welcome, whether or not laden with additional songs or foods to share.

I also wish to co-lead (with Wade Gray) a one-hour workshop called "How to play, AND sing, AND dance to, Alle Brider/Alle Shvester (We are all brothers/sisters.)". This is a lively and loving old song from the Yiddish labor movement.

And then if anyone shows interest on this list, and if there is space and time left after others have had a chance to sign up, maybe an hour of singing familiar Xmas carol tunes whose lyrics have been de-Christianized...    Thanks! I don't arrive until late Thursday.

Hi, Jennifer - I put you in for Alle Brider/Shvester on Saturday, 4 PM Carpeted Room, with Hanukah 4-5 in the same room. My usual limit is 2 sessions per person except for traditionally-scheduled session. I've stretched you to 3. Hope that works.
P.S. Sunset is at 5 PM sharp on Dec 31.

    Thank you kindly!

If I were permitted one more idea, I would like an hour somewhere for a workshop for "Sounds improv, Hitting things, and Mouth music." I wouldn't have to lead it.

Is Debbie McClatchy doing her banjo/OT workshops this year? Sure enjoy her music and it guarantees making it worth the time and money to get there.

Gee, thanks for asking. It gave me an excuse to call Debby, which I should do more often anyhow. She lives just down the pike from me, but I don't see her very often since my wife retired and is no longer her chiropractor. She used to do little concerts here for my mother-in-law before she got her chiropractic treatments. My mother-in-law never remembered her name - she was "that nice young woman who plays the banjo."
She says that every morning from 10-noon, she will be leading a completely-accessible medium-speed old-time jam in the screened room, where Debby is happy to arrange times for one-on-one work for later.
    Have fun!

Joe you did a great job of giving lots of time for the Swing/Band Practice. Is it possible to have 5:00 to 6:00 at the Dance Hall for a three hour slot for Swing/Band practice. I don't want to be greedy but may need the time. Also wanted to make Jim Tepperman's Beatles Sing Along if possible. Last year I accompanied Peter and Jim on bass for the workshop. Your consideration is appreciated.

    Hi Joe,

I would like to give the following workshops:

Ukulele Kindergarten: From the Very Beginning. Some loaners available.

Frame Drums: Expressive, meditational drumming--alone and together. Some loaners available, or bring your own.

Some time after the drum w/s, we can have

NA Flutes (Plus Drums): Add the rhythm of your breath to the rhythm of your heart. Bring A-minor or D-minor flutes (any octave)--some loaners available.

If Sadie is amenable, I would be willing to co-facilitate her "Banging Things" w/s--the "technical" term is "Found Objects"--Indicate that folks can be collecting objects until the w/s, or bring instruments that can be played in alternative ways.

I would prefer for these to be in either the Front Room or the Mirrored Room, any time from noon until about 4, perhaps spread out about one per day (I'll be there the whole time), except the drum and flute classes could be in tandem.

Thank you for listing the descriptions of the spaces--I couldn't even find them on the map!

    Hi Joe,
Reading through some of the other messages here, I realized that you had a 2-workshop limit (never knew that before).

Therefore, could you please combine the frame-drum and the NA flute workshops I requested into one 2-hour workshop?

Frame Drums & NA Flutes: First, we'll learn to play expressive, meditational rhythms--alone or ensemble. Then we'll add the breath of life via NA flutes (bring A-minor or D-minor flutes) to create music-in-the-moment. Some loaners available.

Hi, Kathryn. The limit is a very loose one. If you're using smaller workshop spaces, there's no need for restriction - but I can't give 6 hours in Ruben's House or the Carpeted Room to one person.
I'll put you in the Mirrored Room daily at 3 PM.
I'm looking forward to seeing you again - it's been a while.

In reply to Karen's remark "Regarding the yellow room.fyi I think we called it B flat if that is the room behind study center."

Karen - Yellow Room 22 is not the same as B flat (which was my favorite space for a workshop or a jam - I was disappointed when it was not available last year)

To get to Yellow Room 22, start walking up the hill from the dance hall towards Red Cabins - very quickly you come to a row of 3-4 rooms on the right (remember where Charlie & Susan's late night soirees used to happen in the furthest room?) Yellow Room 22 is the first room in that row closest to the dance hall. The entrance is perpendicular to the rest of the building and faces the dance hall. My recollection is that it was pretty bare room - I think we had to bring in chairs ourselves. There was a large TV on a stand. I think there was some sort of structural element (partial wall or a pillar) in the middle of the room that made it unsuitable for a large gathering if you wanted to be able to see everyone - you could have maybe 8-10 people on one side or the other of that wall. I think there was one of those fake stove/heaters like in cabin 6 that was adequate (barely) for heating the room (but still better than the myriad of little space heaters in the journalism room or the study center), but I could be misremembering.

Here's the text of the housing assignment letter, which gives lots of useful information about camp:

Please check your housing arrangements and make sure this is what you requested. All housing is pre-assigned. The camp requires that we tell them where each individual camper will be staying 10 days before camp begins. Changing housing assignments after Dec. 16th or at Camp will not be possible. If you need to change your housing arrangement please contact Margaret and Amelia (campnewharmony@gmail.com or [get number from Joe Offer]) before Dec. 16. All housing units are equipped with bathrooms (including showers) heating and electrical outlets. Your exact room number will be provided to you along with a map of camp when you check-in at registration.

      WHAT'S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR:

Registration will be in the new Welcome Center. Please park near the front gates and make the short walk if you can. There are 3 parking places in front of the Welcome Center; we'd like to save those for our campers with mobility issues.
All cabins have new mattresses, and many have new bunks. This eliminates the need for bed boards, and we no longer have them.
Lower Village has been rebuilt. You will see all new cabins replacing lower village.
Make sure you bring a flashlight and use it when walking around camp at night!

If you have questions about the site and its facilities please contact Margaret or Amelia, do not contact the staff at Camp Newman directly as they are busy hosting other camps at this time.

NO DROP-INS. We're very sorry, but due to Camp Newman rules, we cannot accept anyone who isn't registered by the December 9th deadline. If you have friends who want to come to camp but are not registered, have them join the SFFMC so they get the Folknik registration materials and can attend next year.

      Getting to Camp

New Harmony is located at Camp Newman 4088 Porter Creek Rd., Santa Rosa, 95404. Click here for map and directions.

If you drive a car to camp, you will need your vehicle license number at the registration desk! We encourage you to carpool. If you are interested in carpooling or able to offer a ride, send a message to campnewharmony@gmail.com.

Please plan to arrive between 2pm and midnight on Wednesday December 28, and 8am and Midnight during the rest of Camp, as our location is a gated site. Press the buzzer at the gate and identify yourself, and Newman staff will unlock the gate for you. Once through the metal gate, park nearby and walk to the large new Welcome Center to register.

      Bus Service

We will again be providing a mini-bus to help our members get up and down the hills, and the bus will start running on Wednesday afternoon. We hope this will make workshop and jamming areas more accessible to those with limited mobility and instruments to carry. The bus will make a continuous circuit of camp, including all workshop areas, the dining hall and the red cabins, several times per hour. Volunteer bus-sherpas will be available to assist you with loading and unloading instruments.

To ensure that the bus can safely negotiate the camp's narrow roads and tight curves, we cannot allow anyone to drive personal cars around camp during the hours of bus operation (except for arrival at & departure from camp). Please help make this a success by parking only in the designated areas and do not block the bus route.

PLEASE DONATE! As was expected, given the state of the economy, campership requests were way up this year, and campership donations were way down - if you can afford to make a campership donation, please do so - no amount is too small. Please make your check payable to SFFMC and write "campership donation" in the memo section. You can send donations to:
      Ellen Eagan
      Camp Harmony Treasurer
      (ask Joe for address)
      San Bruno, CA 94066

We will also be giving you the opportunity to donate at Camp, so please bring your checkbook! All (labeled) donations are tax deductible. (If you donate cash, please attach a note with your name and address so that a receipt can be mailed to you.)

      What to Bring to Camp

BRING: Bedding, towels, bathrobe (bathrooms are co-ed unless you are in a single-sex cabin) clothes for different kinds of weather (hat and rain gear, warm coat, umbrella), earplugs, songs, musical instruments and books, soft sole dance shoes for indoor use only, a coffee/drink mug for each attendee, a flashlight and extra batteries. If you like to sip beverages during workshops, please bring your own traveler's mug. Open-mouthed containers will not be allowed in one of the workshop areas. Optional: dress up clothes and/or table decorations for New Years Eve, decorations for your cabin - no nails, tacks, staples or tape.

A note on bedding: the site provides NO bedding, towels or toiletries. Most beds at Camp are twin-sized camp bunk or single twin beds (no one will need to sleep on a top bunk unless they want to). The camp has put new mattresses throughout camp, so our stay should be much more comfortable!

DO NOT BRING: radios, TV's, CD players, or beeping things. NO smoking, candles or open flames of any kind are permitted in cabins or bathrooms - these are the Camp Newman rules, and they own the site! Electrical appliances can be used in all units. ABSOLUTELY NO PETS.

Camp Newman is a huge facility with a responsive maintenance crew - occasionally a cabin heater is broken and cannot be repaired until after camp. If you are concerned about cabin heating at camp, we encourage you to bring extra blankets and/or a labeled space heater with you to camp.

If you haven't already, consider getting a flu shot to help insure a healthy Camp.

      Dietary Needs and Food Allergies

Camp Newman staff will be preparing all of our meals at New Harmony. They are not able to cater to any special diets. However, there is a tiny separate kitchen located in the Welcome Center (immediately across from the dining hall) that a few campers with legitimate special needs may use. Out of consideration for the occupants of the Welcome Center, we must limit the use of this kitchen to a very small number of people with special permission, and to specific hours of the day. If you wish to cook or store food in this facility, you must make advance arrangements with Margaret or Amelia.

      Camp Life

We invite you to participate in a wide variety of activities and to try new experiences. You can sing along on the choruses or enjoy listening to the jam sessions even if you don't think you're a musician. If you've never danced before, we welcome you to give it a try. We encourage everyone to share in the spirit of Harmony by welcoming beginners.

There are approximately 7 workshop spaces in addition to arts and crafts spaces so there will be plenty of opportunity for workshops and jamming. Some workshops will be pre-scheduled which helps to insure lots to do. Workshops for beginners of all kinds are always appreciated. Please consider leading one! To pre-arrange a workshop before Camp, go to http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=160097.

In case of emergency: If the party you are trying to reach at camp does not have cell phone coverage, then the next best way to reach someone during camp is to call Amelia's cell phone and leave a message (831-331-3705). She will check messages daily and relay any urgent messages ASAP. The Camp has wireless in some areas, and many cell phones work at Camp Newman - but in the spirit of Harmony we encourage you to leave them off while not in use.

This is a volunteer-run Camp and its smooth operation depends on your participation through chores. Those with strong backs and legs are encouraged to come to camp early (between 11am and 2pm on Wed. Dec. 28th) to help with camp set-up, or plan on staying for an extra hour or two at the end of camp to help with take down. Please email campnewharmony@gmail.com by Monday Dec. 26 if you plan to come early so we know to let you in.

      If You Leave Camp Early

If you must leave Camp early, please "check out" at the Registration Table. At the end of New Harmony we must give an accurate accounting to the Newman staff for all used and unused camper-days, so it is important to let us know that you (and your family) are no longer at Camp.

If there is no one at the Reg. Table when you leave, please leave a note there. Be sure to state in the note who is leaving and when you left Camp.

      Cancellations and Refunds

Cancellations can be made by emailing Margaret and Amelia at campnewharmony@gmail.com or calling 831-331-3705 (before 9pm please). If you phone, you must follow up with a written email for a refund All written requests for refunds must be sent by 1-17-17. IMPORTANT: PLEASE USE THE WORDS "HARMONY CANCELLATION" IN THE SUBJECT LINE.

Cancellations made on or before Dec. 9 will receive a full refund.
Cancellations made Dec. 10 thru Dec. 16 will receive a 75% refund.
Cancellations made Dec. 17 thru Dec. 27th will receive a 50% refund.
If you cancel after Dec. 27th, no refund will be given.
No refund will be given to those who did not cancel and did not attend
Camp ("no-shows"). Exceptions may be made for hardship cases.
