(Irving Berlin, 1932)

How can I tell you what is in my heart?
How an I measure each and every part?
How can I tell you how much I love you?
How can I measure just how much I do?

How much do I love you?
I'll tell you no lie
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How many times a day do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?

How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
from here to a star?

And if I ever lost you
How much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

Berlin used a few elements from earlier songs.
Originally published by Irving Berlin Inc.

A hit by Billie Holiday (She didn't record the four-line introduction). Copies on youtube.

Paul Whiteman was the first to record the song.
Also sung by Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Eric Clapton and many others.

I seldom think of Brenda Lee, but listen to her on youtube. I liked it.

Q, I thought you must be talking about Peggy Lee, but I did find a Brenda Lee recording:

It's pretty good, I'll admit, but I think I prefer the Peggy Lee recording:

But the one I really like is the studio recording by Diana Krall:

There's also a live Diana Krall recording, but I don't like that one as much:

I like Irving Berlin... but I look in here for folkish music.

(I haven't filed a protest for several years....just wanted to keep my purist oar in the water)

Just keep your purist "oar" into the deep ocean instead of simple cup of water. There's much more to be detected.
