Subject: Lyr Add: OH, HOW I HATE TO GET UP IN THE MORNING From: GUEST,Arjay Date: 10 Nov 01 - 08:31 PM I'm looking for the verses of Irving Berlin's "Oh, How I Hate To Get Up In The Morning, as well as the various last couplets in the chorus. I know this is not a traditional song, although it's 82 or 83 years old, but maybe someone knows a website that has all Irving Berlin's lyrics or that might have this one, anyway. All I know of the song now is: Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning! Someday I'm going to murder the bugler! (Another chorus goes: and the last last couplet is: I'd really like to be able to do the whole song in my Veterans' Day programs. Can someone help me out? Arjay P.S. I don't know the tune to the verse either, so I could use a MIDI or at least the chords. I do, of course, know the tune for the part I posted. |

Subject: RE: Full Lyric: O How I Hate To Get UP in AM From: Don Firth Date: 15 Nov 01 - 01:53 AM My Dad was in the tank corp during World War I. A verse he used to do was one he picked up from other soldiers, a variation of one of the original verses. Folk process perhaps?

Subject: Lyr Add: OH! HOW I HATE TO GET UP IN THE MORNING From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 May 13 - 06:11 PM From the sheet music at Indiana University: OH! HOW I HATE TO GET UP IN THE MORNING (Irving Berlin) New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co., ©1918. 1. The other day I chanced to meet a soldier friend of mine. He'd been in camp for sev'ral weeks and he was looking fine. His muscles had developed and his cheeks were rosy red I asked him how he liked the life and this is what he said:. CHORUS 1: Oh! How I hate to get up in the morning! Oh! How I'd love to remain in bed! For the hardest blow of all Is to hear the bugler call: "You've got to get up. You've got to get up. You've got to get up this morning." Some day I'm going to murder the bugler. Some day they're going to find him dead. I'll amputate his reveille, And step upon it heavily, And spend the rest of my life in bed. 2. A bugler in the army is the luckiest of men. He wakes the boys at five and then goes back to bed again. He doesn't have to blow again until the afternoon. If ev'rything goes well with me, I'll be a bugler soon. CHORUS 2: Oh! How I hate to get up in the morning! Oh! How I'd love to remain in bed! For the hardest blow of all Is to hear the bugler call: "You've got to get up. You've got to get up. You've got to get up this morning." Oh! boy, the minute the battle is over, Oh! boy, the minute the foe is dead, I'll put my uniform away And move to Philadelph-i-a And spend the rest of my life in bed. [This web page gives an additional verse and chorus labeled "Revised version" but it gives no sheet music or publication date:] 3. I've been a soldier quite a while and I would like to state: The life is simply wonderful; the Army food is great. I sleep with ninety-seven others in a wooden hut. I love them all, they all love me, it's very lovely but— CHORUS 3: Oh! And then I'll get that other pup: The guy who wakes the bugler up, And spend the rest of my life in bed. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning From: Joe Offer Date: 29 May 13 - 02:27 AM This song is the story of my life. I don't really function until noon. This song was part of a musical titled Yip-Yip-Yaphank, written by Sergeant Irving Berlin. It opened 19 August 1918, and had 32 performances. Irving Berlin also used the song in Ziegfield Follies of 1918, and in This Is the Army (1942). "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning" was also used in the 1943 movie titled This Is the Army, starring Ronald Reagan - but Irving Berlin himself sang this song in the film. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning From: clueless don Date: 29 May 13 - 08:06 AM Am I correct that there is another song, possibly also an Irving Berlin song, sung to the same tune as "Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning!"? The opening line is something like "Gee, ain't it great to be back in the Army?" Don |
