Subject: BS: Your Life's Mission. When did it begin?
From: Donuel

civil rights and music shaped my thinking between 12 and 17 it became a life long mission. Dad, a Jewish immigrant with family lost in the holocaust, and my mother an artist who viewed people of different heritage as treasures made civil rights a priority, At 12 I went on the bus to hear Martin Luther King in DC.
Touring the US and Canada in Orchestra tours cemented music as a life mission for peace.
Because of my civil rights stance I got the job that changed my adult life.
My adult mission began around 24 and persists until today.
Time does not allow to explain now but I think knowing other people's life mission could make for many friendships and songs.

The Missions was a box on the sideboard that we occasionally dropped a penny or two in when feeling holy after confession. Mill Hill I seem to recall. And every year for a while, the Holy Ghost Fathers (I think they traded as the White Fathers in Africa) came round and showed us a film of missionaries driving round the bush on motorbikes to minister to the childlike Africans - we all wanted to ride that Matchless 350 and considered, quite seriously for a day or two, whether we really had a vocation. The next arbitrary caning from some idiot Brother generally put an end to such ideas.

As for "life's mission"? Loving freedom and human equality (as I always will), I fell in with Trots and antiracism in the 70s and feminists in the 80s, but too busy being self unemployed in the 90s to do much, after which time we had Tony Blair, Shining New Labour and The Shining New Millennium. Followed by oh bloody dear, a million natural Labour supporters marching against war...

After which there's only hope for a quick and clean death. Antiracism's still good, though.

Never thought about it like that exactly.... but once in 1956,as a junior in high school, I was working as a grocery checker on one of the first Sundays after Kansas 'blue laws' were repealed. (Not many folks were used to Sunday shopping, and it was very slow)

I walked down to the paperback book rack and picked up a copy of The_Age_of_Ideology. which was part of a series. I bought the book and barely put it down for days. It was my introduction to real Philosophy... and to critical thinking. No matter what I have done since, the idea of careful thinking has remained a guiding principle... it affected my own civil rights involvement, my ideas about religion, politics, women...etc....

Ain't sayin' I always get it right, but it sure helps me a lot to identify *wrong*

Very interesting question. I have always taught... really always, I remember teaching other little kids to whistle as soon as I learned to. But it was only after 9/11 that it became so important to me to teach people to question their faith.

Mine started when the bloody cassette player self destructed after telling me the details of said mission.

Up to yet, my mission is on track.

Beer, check.
Sex, check.
Sheffield Wednesday season ticket, check.
New guitar strings, check.
Regular supply of pork scratching, check.

To be fair, I don't have a mission as such, but I give no quarter to bigotry and inequality wherever it raises it's ugly head. Not always pretty, I admit, but not confronting it just to keep decorum and sensitivities would be worse, and not me.

Groan, Van, LOL! I used to line up my teddy bears and dolls and 'teach' them when I was about two-and-a-half. Bossy little horror I expect. Like Mrrzy, I have always been a teacher. But my interest in Africa may have begun when West Africans started to arrive in my area of West London, to work in the Wolfe rubber factory. I was very small and thought at first they were all chimney sweeps (the only black-faced men I'd seen up til then.) I was somehow fascinated by them, and loved their appearance and gracefulness. My sister and I would make up what we called 'African' words and songs, and from there on I was determined to travel to see those lands where these people lived. That led to meeting my husband and now I have a whole Ivorian family to love.

Not a mission as such. Just a lifelong (and I am talking from about age 4 or 5) desire to do as little harm as possible to people and to the earth. Sometimes I have strayed from the path. Sometimes unintentionally, sometimes not.

In the midst of one of my youthful self-righteous rants, I was once asked "do you want to be 'right' or do you want to be have close connections with people.   Since then my mission has been to focus on understanding rather than on 'proving'.   Not always easy.

Hiya,
.....
Read a book about a gypsy folk band in colourful clothing, who were really witches in love w/ their High Priest, unable to eat, drink, etc. w/o his permission, kept on literal leashes in the form of a stupidly tight wooden necklace, which tightened when they had 2nd thoughts re: whether they truly loved him [of course most didn't]. Could "hear" [as in imagine] the band's songs;as you can probably tell, the book fascinated me.

Give/take a couple of yrs, I've eaten up legends, folk -rock, & medieval stuff, while trying to surround myself w/ similar people ever since, or write said world into existence when none can be found.

Fav. childhood poem was 'I Saw A Peacock'; every line started w/ "I saw ___" & what they saw was all wrong. "What a good song that'd make", I thought in my little girlie head. Was overjoyed to hear Steeleye's 'Well Done Liar..!' which is basically the same thing.

I think I might make some artwork for said poem myself.

Also calm people down who can't get their wants/needs across, cheer them up etc.

I don't think any of it's a/my mission though.

Semantically speaking 'mission' is not the perfect word to express a life long passion. Campbell called it one's bliss or door opener.

My adult bliss:
I had a juvenile repeating dream, no really, that in the few moments remaining before the missiles landed, be it front an accidental or intentional, I saw first my neighbors exiting their front door malevolently blaming someone else or each other for the coming holocaust, then I saw from an omniscient point of view all neighbors bursting forth each with someone else to blame. In some cases the shadows of the blaming masses were sealed into concrete, their anger fossilized for millennia by vaporization. It was a child's repeating dream but it seemed to contain its own answer.

After years of thought it became clear to me that being right or being happy, or being a greedy liar, similar to Dave's comment, all learned states of mind and beliefs or adherence to dogmatic thoughts are injected into the brains of people by similar means. Perhaps I could help people defend themselves against "the dark arts"?

The injection of basic destructive commands into people is the same worldwide as if one giant syringe was squeezing its venom or medicine 24/7. This syringe goes by countless names, methodologies, religions, propagandists, politicians, businessmen, lovers and haters alike. That one thing is hypnosis and how easily the brain is led, guided, directed, focused and distracted by others or one's self.

I thought for an independent open mind to flourish what was needed was universal awareness of the susceptibility and use of hypnosis upon people who need to know who and what was being done to them.
What was needed was a hypnosis awareness vaccine so that the positive use of an enhanced focused mind for the good would be enhanced and on the other hand be warned against the predatory uses of hypnosis.

This is similar to the revelation Mrzzy mentioned.

With regards to dedicating oneself to do no harm;
to life or Earth it is a noble but difficult thing to do. Every action or inaction can do some harm. I was ten when I saw a cat with a live bird in its mount so I yelled at the cat and threatened to throw a rock to make the cat drop the bird. The cat didn't, I threw the rock and the rock hit the bird in mid air as the cats reflexes dodged the rock in a micro second. The bird died instantly. In a bio system we are all essentially eating ourselves with a little help from the sun and established eco systems. Not everyone is suitable to practice Janeism. Every decision we make does not have the virtue of seeing every eventual outcome and whether it will cause no harm or not.

When I was hired by a hypnosis firm, many separate experiences came together be it Carlos Castaneda in HS, Hypnosis in college, mushrooms, LSD experiments and my strange encounter with Telepathine, a compound from the Amazon.

At this date I am still working on my hypnosis vaccine book. The Very same idea that caused the Jesuit order feel threatened in Rochester, at least enough so to take certain actions and spend money and time in a kind of vengeful defense. When the CIA came calling they clearly wanted to weaponize hypnosis for their own misguided purposes of murder and social engineering and wanted a veteran in the field to further refine the process that was begun long ago by their recently deceased pioneer of hypnosis and drug weapons designer.
While I did not accept their offer when I finally said no their acts of revenge were too bizarre to be believed by most people. Even for 1982, I was surprised at the progress they had made with regards to covert weapons. I did what most of you would do, I ran, first west and then east.

I know one's personal area of expertise may seem to have universal applications and may sometimes become inappropriately over generalized but the concept and practice of hypnosis in religion, politics, sociology, media and business is absolutely no delusion.
You are right this moment living the outcome of all the intentionally applied hypnosis successes and misguided cruelties.

How important is it? It is at least as important as psychology, political science, religion and linguistics combined.
At least this is what my vaccine book seeks to prove.
So I write, but I'd rather just play banjo.

PS
the recent subject of hacking, tapping and stealing ones personal privacy is a 40 year old sore subject for me. Spaw knows how I feel about it.

Many do "just stumble on"... those who discover something like a 'mission' may have IT choose THEM. Something just happens and starts affecting how one lives and deals with "life, the universe and everything". It can be specific like music...or general like 'nature'. Kinda depends on how one defines 'mission'.

My life's mission is connected with my understanding that there is more to life on Earth than just people. Our species is just one of many and until we fully recognise that fact and start acknowledging the constraints that nature has imposed on us, and our utter dependence on other living things for our survival, we will render our own species extinct. We may have achieved all sorts of wonderful things - science, philosophy, art etc., etc., etc. - but without a proper appreciation of our place in nature, and how we relate to it, we are nothing more than locusts voraciously devouring the planet and the resources we, and everything else, utterly depends on.

There will, no doubt, be humanists among you who will scoff at this or condemn me for being anti-human (or something). But I would ask you, do you need to breath, drink and eat in order to stay alive? If you answer "yes" (I'm not sure I want to hear from anyone who answers "no"!) then where do you think those essentials that keep you alive (and reading, writing, painting, politicking and praying) come from?

This lifelong mission of mine started years ago, in my early 20s, in a brief period out of work, when I decided, for something to fill the time, to learn the names of common wild flowers. That's when I first came face-to-face with the rest of the world around me - the rest of the world that lots of other people either don't seem to see or regard as trivial and beneath their notice.

So true.

This season there was no mass migration of Monarch butterflies going south for the first time in countless millennia.

It is theorized that the milkweed plant has been wiped out on all soybean and grain fields in the US by the pesticide Round UP(a powerful pesticide) to the point that there was no food for the butterflies. When coupled with the horrid droughts for the last 2 years the decline the shocking decline of the Monarch migration is now almost complete.

Monsanto is silent on the subject.

No one should forget that the bees that pollinate 1/3 of all human food have declined along a similar rate as the butterflies since Round Up was first released upon the world.

Kids declare what they would like to be when they grow up. What about declaring a life mission?
Perhaps there is one person whose life mission is to eradicate greed?
Sound impossible? Maybe not. Human evolution has refined deception to supreme levels far above any other species. If we can learn to temper deception, the lies that enable greed can be controlled.
We learned the 7 deadly sins well enough. the Sin of the lie if taught as the worst sin of all might be a start. Oh well its just a random thought.

I think the single best thing I have ever done, was to homeschool my stepson through high school. He was miserable in elementary school, and missed almost a third of his class days every year because of allergies. He didn't fit in with other kids very well.

We figured he'd be eaten alive in a regular high school. I was retired and newly married to his mother, and I volunteered to teach him. I could keep his attention for only about three hours a day, but we worked hard during those three hours - and then watched school-related television in the afternoon. After four years of high school, he loved school.

He completed a BS in Physics at the University of California, and now he's working on a Master's in Physics at San Francisco State - and he's teaching two lab classes for undergraduates.

And he isn't miserable any more.

I don't understand most of the stuff he's studying now, so I guess my job is done. All I have to do now, is sign the checks to pay for his education. Hope he gets a job some day.

-Joe-
