Subject: RE: Tech: Help - how do I 'go back'? From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Nov 13 - 09:41 PM Microsoft Advice: Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 (and some other stuff. 1. To continue receiving WinXP updates, you MUST INSTALL Service Pack 3 (SP3). 2. If you installed SP3 after either IE7 or IE8 was installed, you cannot remove IE7 or IE8. (Its unclear whether an "upgrade" of an IE7 that was "unremovable" sould make the IE8 upgrade unremovable.) 3. If this is a problem, you should be able to uninstall SP3, after which you should be able to uninstall IE7 or IE8, after which you can reinstall SP3, after which you can reinstall either IE7 or IE8 so that a "backup" removal can be done. It's uncertain whether this is your problem, but the article linked gives more complete discussion that may help you decide. The article also includes links to Microsoft instructions for how to uninstall SP3 and both IE7 and IE8 in WinXP. John |

From: michaelr Date: 03 Nov 13 - 08:39 PM SRS - Mystifyingly, System Restore tells me "your system cannot be restored to the date specified (which was the day before). No files have been deleted." bobad - Your link seems to be specifically for "a custom Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0" (whatever that is), not an IE upgrade. Should I just chuck IE altogether? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help - how do I 'go back'? From: GUEST,Tony Date: 02 Nov 13 - 05:09 PM There are several websites that post old versions of free software. You can google "old versions" to find them. Here's one: http://www.oldversion.com/windows/internet-explorer/ |
Subject: Tech: Help - how do I 'go back'? From: michaelr Date: 02 Nov 13 - 04:42 PM I was prompted to upgrade my browser to IE8 and downloaded/installed it. Now I can't access the web (I'm posting this through Google Chrome) because each time I open IE, I get a message that "this program has asked Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." Perhaps someone knows what to do about this, but failing that - how do I restore my system to what it was before that download? I'm running Windows XP Home. |
