Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: RTim Date: 18 Dec 13 - 07:34 AM The Hook Norton Brewery in Oxfordshire serve a Mild - 2.9% only and very drinkable. I have heard however that it is very difficult to keep correctly, so it may not be available in all their pubs. However, if you are in Hook Norton, go to the Pear Tree which is at the beginning of Brewery Lane and I am sure John will have it on tap!! Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: C Stuart Cook Date: 18 Dec 13 - 07:20 AM Most Robinsons pubs sell the nectar of the Gods. A light mild that is peerless. John Willy Lees puba sell a wondrous mild called Brewers Dark. Whilst the subject might raise some degree of debate, historically, Mild was a man's drink, Bitter was for kids. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: melodeonboy Date: 18 Dec 13 - 07:13 AM Goacher's (Maidstone) do a lovely dark mild. As mentioned above, the Harvey's dark mild is also very good. I think Harvey's also do a light mild, but I'm not sure of the availability. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Pete Jennings Date: 18 Dec 13 - 07:03 AM In the Midlands, Bank's mild is widely available. Not light in colour, but not as dark as some others. Most of the "bigger" clubs have a summer recess which generally seems to start around the time of the Cambridge Folk Festival (end of July) and ends in early September, i.e. they're closed throughout August. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Manitas_at_home Date: 18 Dec 13 - 06:54 AM In McMullen's pubs that was a one and one, half of AK with a bottle of pale ale. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: GUEST,Musket Date: 18 Dec 13 - 06:51 AM Around Nottinghamshire and bits of Derbyshire, Mansfield bitter was the norm for many years and was a bit too sweet for most tastes. Most of the pubs I knew sold "mix." Half bitter half mild. Always pour the bitter first or get shouted at.... Conversely, if you go back enough years, the contents of the drip trays together with a few bottles of stout were poured into the mild barrel. Waste not, want not..... |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 18 Dec 13 - 06:15 AM Red Fox Brewery in Coggeshall, Essex make a rather nice dark mild. Come to think of it they make great beer. Full Stop. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: GUEST,AlanG at work Date: 18 Dec 13 - 05:54 AM When in Suffolk, visit The Blaxhall Ship; good real ale (including mild) and folk music on Monday afternoons and most nights of the week. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Manitas_at_home Date: 18 Dec 13 - 05:47 AM There are a few more milds available in London than there used to be, mostly dark though. Not easy to find - you'll have to go to a more selective pub. The Redemption Brewery are doing something called Trinity at 3%ABV but I'm not sure if its a mild or a weak bitter. It tastes a lot stronger than it is. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: bradfordian Date: 18 Dec 13 - 05:42 AM Yes, plenty of Milds around, I can recommend THWAITE'S Mild. Summer recess for folk clubs is variable. Whilst some close for summer, There are plenty of clubs operating in summer, tho they may close for "Whitby week" |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Jack Campin Date: 18 Dec 13 - 05:31 AM "Mild" is the English word. It's "60 shilling" or sometimes "pale ale" in Scotland. Not very common any more in Scotland. The Anvil in Bonnyrigg and the Dean in Newtongrange are the only places I know that always have it. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Bugsy Date: 18 Dec 13 - 05:30 AM Thank Ye kindly Gentlemens. I used to like a drop of Fremlins (way back in the dark days) and Greene king last time home. Looking forward to a good pint and also a serve of Skate & Chips! We'll be in Hertfordshire and Suffolk for most of the trip but will keep the above in mind if we can venture further afield. Thanks again for the info. CHeers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 18 Dec 13 - 04:26 AM McMullens is the Hertford brewer. They make a beer called AK which they used to call mild but they now call bitter. It is pale and worth looking out for. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Dec 13 - 04:22 AM Available extensively in the Midlands and North West. Not so much in other areas but, as detailed above, you can find it elsewhere. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Stu Date: 18 Dec 13 - 04:12 AM I love mild too, and luckily there's still mild about. Here in the North-West we're blessed with many milds, including Holts, Robinsons and Sam Smiths (imported from over t'hill) as well as many micro breweries. If visit a good real ale pub anywhere in the country chances are you might find a mild on. |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Will Fly Date: 18 Dec 13 - 03:54 AM The Lewes brewery, Harveys, still brews a mild, and you can buy it on draught in some of their pubs. If you get to Brighton, the Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Street sells a good pint of it. I'm currently drinking Harveys Old at the moment - a nice, dark, stouty ale. My mate Chris is drinking pints of "mother-in-law" - old and bitter... |
Subject: RE: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: GUEST,John Foxen Date: 18 Dec 13 - 03:25 AM I can thoroughly recommend the Oscar Wilde mild from the Mighty Oak Brewing Company of Maldon, Essex. As for a place to drink it: The White Hart, Swan Ln, Margaretting Tye, Ingatestone, Essex CM4 9JX. And the best time to drink it is on the second Thursday of the month when a splendid session is hosted by the fine Crane duet concertina player Paul McCann (starts around 8.30pm but you can come earlier and eat a good meal at the pub). A lot of folk clubs go into recess for summer but my club HaverFolk keeps going (with a break for the Whitby Festival week. We are based at the White Horse pub near Romford (see website for details). Hope to see you and Mrs Bugsy at the White Hart or Horse. |
Subject: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Bugsy Date: 18 Dec 13 - 02:55 AM Me and Mrs Bugsy are heading over to UK late August and September. I haven't been back for 20 years and I used to enjoy the odd pint or six of Mild, Preferably light, but dark if that's what's on offer. So the question is, Do Pubs still sell it? Is it readily available or will I have to comb the back woods of the Fens to find it? Also, do the folk clubs in UK still go into recess during summer? Cheers Bugsy |
