We sang this little ditty as children growing up in the 1950's.
However, we sang 'ganny' not grandma. (Colloquial).

She wears a tartan kilt
She wears it in the fashion
With pleats down the side and a tassel in the middle!

So come up and see your granny, etc.

First time I heard this ditty was during national service with the RE, my mate Derek Norman Smith sung it every night before he went to bed .Every morning he sang a song about Chinese crackers.

The verse my granny sang to me was
She wears a tartan kilt
She wears it in the fashion
And every time she twirls aroond
She shows her bacon ration

Hi,

Many, many thanks for replies.

I had already contracted the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library and today they sent me the lyrics which they have as follows:

Come up and see your granny
Come up and see her now
Come up and see your granny
'Cos she's all brand new,

She's got a broken table,
A chair without a back,
A door without a handle
And a window with a crack.

All rather polite and nothing to do with her physical attributes which was all to do with replacement parts which made her "bran noo" in my mother-in-laws version.

Do you know anyone who has a copy of the The Folkways LP, The Cassette or The Biography mentioned in folkopedia.efdss.org above and do any of them have all the words in them? Could they share?

Getting closer!

Keep in touch.

Sue

The song was collected by MacColl and Seeger in 1961.

The version my Geordie mother-in-law used to sing (following a little lubrication) went like this.

Come up and see your ganny
Come up and see her noo
Come up and see your ganny
Cos she's aal brand new

She wears a tartan kilt
She wears it in the fashion
Pleats roond the side
In the middle hangs a tassel

Come up and see your ganny
Come up and see her noo
Come up and see your ganny
Cos she's aal brand new

There were more verses relating to (I think) a false leg and another about a false eye, both of which contributed to her being aal bran new. The chorus may have started as Cum up etc

I'd love to know the remaining verses if anyone can oblige.

Sue

I remember that we used sing this, or rather the girls did, when I was a child in the 50's. I lived in Ashfield Road, Gosforth (Sounds posh - it wasn't)There was a dance that went with it. I have always been fascinated by this ditty and have never come across it until I made a search just now.

the verse I remember is -

She wears a tartan kilt
She wears it in a fashion
With a pleat doon the side
An' a tassel up the middle

Grandfather, Grandfather
Grandfather, grandfather, show your delight,
In comes Betty, all in white;
White shoes and stockings, white curly hair,
Isn't she a pretty girl to take to the fair?
Come up an' see your grannie,
Come up an' see her now,
Come up an' see your grannie,
Cause she's all bran' new.
Old Uncle Luke, he thinks he's cute,
But Granpa's even cuter;
He's ninety-eight and stays out late
With Grandma on her scooter.

Ooops. Forgot the line break. Sorry.

Grandfather, grandfather, show your delight,
In comes Betty all in white;
White shoes and stockings, white curly hair,
Isn't she a pretty girl to take to the fair?

Come up an' see yer grannie,
Come up an' see her noo,
Come up an' see yer grannie,
Cos she's all bran' new.

She's got a broken table.
A chair without a back,
A door without a handle
And a window with a crack.

Old Uncle Luke, he thinks he's cute,
But Grandpa's even cuter;
He's ninety-eight and stays out late
With Grandma on her scooter.

There's an old Geordie song which goes something like this:

" Come up and see your granny, come up and see her noo, come up and see your granny cos she's all brand new, She wears a tartan Kilt, she wears it in the Fashion"

There's lots more but I can't remember it. It is obviously based on the Scots song Come Up and See My Garrett with roughly the same tune. My granny used to sing it to me over 60 years ago and it was very popular on coach trips but I have never been able to find the full lyrics. Can anybody help?
