Subject: BS: American Series From: GUEST,CS Date: 19 May 14 - 10:55 AM Ok another for our friends over the waves. Or indeed anyone who likes good entertaining TV. Recently we've really being enjoying some great US dramas; stuff produced by the likes of HBO and AMC for example. We've been catching up on series such as Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Killing, True Detective, Mad Men, True Blood and the amazing Game of Thrones. I think US TV dramas can be exceedingly well made and they're really hitting a high of late in terms of quality of writing, cinematography and acting. What are your top modern US TV series and why? |
Subject: RE: BS: American Series From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 19 May 14 - 11:21 AM one show that has been fun and clever has been Person of Interest... on CBS of all places. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Series From: Wesley S Date: 19 May 14 - 02:59 PM I've seen two episodes of "Penny Dreadful" on Showtime. It's American made but takes place in Victorian England. Penny Dreadful I'm about to start the first season of "House of Cards". And I'm totally hooked on "The Walking Dead". And "Homeland". And if you haven't seen it already Bill you might check out "The Newsroom". |

Subject: RE: BS: American Series From: GUEST,CS Date: 20 May 14 - 09:52 AM Fargo we're also following. Isn't Billy Bob Thornton amazing! And Kevin Spacey in House of Cards is also just brilliant. Homeland was great too, though Walking dead's gone off the boil for me. Thanks for Penny Dreadful, right up my alley. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Series From: jacqui.c Date: 20 May 14 - 07:21 PM Watched the first couple of episodes of The Americans - couldn't get into it. I git the first season of Newsroom on DVD as we don't have the premium channels. Now I'm waiting for the second season release - I'm hooked. Thought The West Wing was superb, again on DVD. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Series From: Dave the Gnome Date: 22 May 14 - 04:45 PM Penny Dreadful was indeed good. I was a bit worried it may be another Buffy spin off but it isn't. Timothy Dalton is brilliant. DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: American Series - television From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 May 14 - 07:42 AM Firefly was brilliant. I cannot understand why it was canned. The film is pretty good too. DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: American Series - television From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 23 May 14 - 09:13 AM "Firefly was brilliant. I cannot understand why it was canned. The film is pretty good too." Why??? Bean counters & incompetent middle managers who'd rather promote their own vested interests and sabotage each other's projects. The network wanted Josh Weadon ... but didn't grasp that the project he wanted to do would actually cost money to produce. So they freaked at the costs. The sabotage was shifting the air time so that fans would miss episodes and new viewers couldn't find it, costing them Neilson ratings, to justify pulling the show & replacing with another. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Series - television From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 23 May 14 - 11:03 AM LOL... no problem.. I go by geek or sg... Ms. for the rest. As they say... call me anything you want, just not late for supper. gender designations are totally arbitrary considering that gender is assigned to nouns! and to relate this to American series... Time Tunnel (1960's) was the first sci fi show that had a female in the role of a scientist! Then came Star Trek and we got our first black female in a similiar position. when very young, I loved to watch Man and the Challenge, but was sad that the female role was a mere secretary with not much input. It just didn't seem right. |
