Subject: Saint Brendan's Voyage From: Chris Seymour Date: 29 Nov 99 - 10:16 PM I heard this Jimmie Driftwood song numerous times on folk radio years ago but never noted down who recorded it. My bandmates have just had a baby named Brendan, and I want to get them a recording of the song -- any leads? (I looked it up in DigiTrad, which lists words [helpful] but has no recording info.) |
Subject: RE: Saint Brendan's Voyage From: Barry Finn Date: 29 Nov 99 - 11:28 PM I think Mick Maloney has recorded it somewhere. Good Luck, Barry |
Subject: RE: Saint Brendan's Voyage From: Date: 30 Nov 99 - 12:45 AM St. Brendan's Voyage was recorded by Christy Moore on the album Ordinary Man in 1985. see his website at: www.christymoore.net/ sorry, can't do the blue clicky thing. hope this is what you are looking for. |
Subject: RE: Saint Brendan's Voyage From: jeffp Date: 30 Nov 99 - 09:46 AM Mick Moloney and Eugene O'Donnell recorded it on their "Uncommon Bonds" CD. It's on Green Linnet Records, #GLCD 1053. (I just happen to have it here with me, can you tell?) It's a great CD, with a number of excellent musicians, including Norman and Nancy Blake, Seamus Egan, Liz Carroll, and many others. Interestingly, they call it "St. Brendan's Fair Isle." I've met Mick at the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia, where he hosts Irish Week, and I can wholeheartedly recommend any of his CDs. |
Subject: RE: Saint Brendan's Voyage From: arkie Date: 30 Nov 99 - 11:14 AM Barley Bree has also recorded the song, as did Jimmy Driftwood. It is on one of Barley Bree's Shanachie recordings. There are also quite a few references to St. Brendan on the web. |

Here is another song about the voyage of St Brendan:
Now as darkness fills my sail
Now I will set sail
Sail the seven seas
In retracing his pattern there
