The glorious voice of the Austn Folk Revival (& Jazz) Singer, Marian Henderson nee Grossman, is no more. There are at least 7 YouTube clips of her though.

So many Gooduns are now In Spirit..... (at least My Beloved Lawls will have many Folkies to sing in company with!)

thanks to Warren Fahey's FB page :

PASSING OF MARIAN HENDERSON
One of Australia's most-loved singers died yesterday and in doing so broke a long chain with the revival of interest in our folk music. She joins Gary Shearston, Declan Affley, Tina Lawton, Don Henderson, John Dengate, Gordon McIntyre and, sadly, so many more fine interpreters of our traditional music. She was 78 years of age.

Marian retired from singing many years ago and settled on the NSW north coast where she became part of a wide community. Despite a long illness she through her considerable energy into art.

A friend, Ruth Miller, told me Marion spent her last months at her son's place near Mt Mee, Queensland, looking out at a spectacular view. and occasionally playing the piano.

Marian was there at the beginning of the so-called folk revival. She made several recordings (never enough), appeared at countless concerts and was ever-present at peace marches and other demonstrations for a better world.

Her singing was exceptional. Wonderful breathy phrasing and clear enunciation married a husky, beautiful voice that was as comfortable with jazz as folk music. She wrote songs but in my mind is best remembered for her singing of traditional songs like this version of the convict ballad Van Diemen's Land :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EDwD_kGrYw

Further history can be seen on my website's Australian Folk Revival pages :
http://www.warrenfahey.com/enter-t…/australian-folk-revival/   "

Thanks to 'Catter Tony in Darwin, for passing this on.

VALE, Marian (my heroine....)

Richard Brooks on harmonica??? He seems to have been the "go to" man for recording session work around that time.

Any one recognise the the English concertina on The Restless Years film? Mike Ball?

Yes Richard Brooks on chromatic harmonica. Richard played on all of Gary Shearston's albums and also in several ABC radio programs I produced. I think Ade Monsborough, a jazz harmonica player, also performed with Marian. Mike Ball played english concertina on The Restless Years - a terrific player and now a grand old man and cricket tragic (lives in UK)

I was musing on the delights of Marian's voice and recalled that when I was trying to learn the guitar, back in Perth, WA in the very early 70s, I chose to take her "Moon and Mice" composition to learn.
My tutor (a Mason Williams "Classical Gas" type exponent), could not understand how I could expect to run before I could walk.
He was trying to interest me in the dross of "Skip to My Lou" whilst I desired only the haunting magical qualities in Marian's singing and playing of this song!! (I didn't really understand the lyrics but I craved its wondrous beauty!)

As far as I know, it only appeared on the 1972 Compilation folk LP "3 Floors Down" from Sydney (was it recorded at PACT??), being hawked at my local folk club at the time. I still cling to my copy - though it is selling on EBay for $50AU I believe! Has Declan Affley doing a great "Island in the River" too, and many other tidbits.

If I get a chance, I will provide Blickys for Marian's songs on-line ...

Vale, Marian

I never saw Marian Henderson in concert. I have the LP called,
"Cameo." Does anyone know of Marian's other albums and the title of those albums/release dates?

Also, does anyone know if Marian ever toured and performed in USA?
What USA cities?

I bought the "Cameo" LP (second hand record shop) many, many years ago in the Los Angeles area. Still have the LP and always thought Marian was a very talented singer, although not known here. I did not know of Marian when I bought the album but I knew of some of the songs and glad I bought it - have listened to it many times over the years.

Was the "Cameo" album ever released on CD?

Aztec Music was saved from liquidation in 2012 - extract - In a statement then Lethborg said, "Two years ago, Aztec Music (the importer) lost in excess of $350,000 from distributors and music stores closing down/going out of business. That's way too much for a small company to endure and, in the end, it caught up with us and the bank had no choice but to withdraw their finance.

Aztec's facebook site lists their catalogue & it's is not included.

Harry Robertson website comments Whale Catching Men is being re-released later this year, & includes one track by MArian Henderson

RIP Marian. The Australian Folk Scene has lost another great artist and performer. Thank you for the legacy you have left us in your recordings.

And just to tie up a few loose ends, the performers on The Glorious Years were Martin Wesley-Smith, Jerry Wesley-Smith, Keith Conlon, Amanda Irving and Ted Hodgeman.

The album Three Floors Down on which Marion performed Moon and Mice was available on the Midoztouch website. However it was uploaded to Megaupload which no longer exists. Contact with the admin at Midoztouch may lead to someone having a copy.

Marian was my good friend for many years. A very talented musician, singer and later artist, teacher, gardener and many other things. We farewelled her at Brunswick Heads yesterday ... a large crowd of friend attended a simple ceremony to send her ashes out to sea and celebrate her life.

Here is a list of all Marian Henerson's recordings that I have heard of, or heard. Her last recording as a singer was a duet on an album by Margret RoadKnight recorded live at Bush Theatre, Nimbin in 1988 by our studio, Bush Traks.

In her last couple of decades Marian no longer sang or played guitar, but she painted and played piano, often playing the grand piano in Nimbin Hall to open concerts and cabarets.

Also, to add to rich-joy's list of YouTube clips, there are also four unlisted videos, three of them from one of her ABC shows, Sit Yourself Down, Take a Look Around, recorded in 1974, with Jeannie Lewis, Graham Lowndes, Mike McClelland, Bob Hudson and others. There's also a GTK clip of Marian singing "Kum Bah Yah" at the 1971 Fairlight Festival near Mittagong. As they are unlisted I am not sure if I should post the links here ... let me know.

Other television shows included Jazz Meets Folk, Dave's Place and The Restless Years, all in the 1960s.

Marian Henderson's recordings:

Old Botany Bay (Music for Pleasure 1964):-

Adieu to Ye Judges and Juries (with John Currie)
The Convict Maid
Van Dieman's Land
Girl with the Black Velvet Band (with John Currie)
Moreton Bay
Bold Jack O'Donohue (John Currie with Marian Henderson)

Australian Folk Songs Vol. 1 (Pix Magazine 1964):-

Botany Bay
Springtime It Brings on the Shearing
The Old Bark Hut
Peter Clarke

Australian Folk Songs Vol. 2 (Pix Magazine 1964):-

Waltzing Matilda
Jim Jones of Botany Bay
Euabalong Ball
Van Dieman's Land

Great Folk Songs Of The World (Pix Magazine 1964):-

Down By The River Side
Lolly Too Dum
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine
This Old Town

Marian Henderson - Cameo (MCA 1970):-

Antique Annie's Magic Lantern Show
Miss Otis Regrets
Stranger Song
Lady of Carlisle
Fotheringay
Streets of Forbes
First Boy I Loved
Country Girl
Guess Who I Saw Today
Bald Mountain
Convict Maid
Sprig of Thyme

Harry Robertson – Whale Chasing Men (1971):-

Norfolk Whalers
Whaling Wife

3 Floors Down (recorded at Pact Folk 1972):-

Moon and Mice

First Light (recorded Music Farm 1978):-

Progressive jazz rock album featuring Marian Henderson on vocals, with Ron Carpenter, Harry Freeman, John Gray, Graham Jesse, Alan Freeman and others.

An Audience with Margret RoadKnight (recorded Bush Traks 1988):-

For All the Good People (duet Marian Henderson with Margret RoadKnight)

An interview with Marian Henderson, retired jazz, blues and folk singer by Alex Hood and Annette Hood (2002):-

Ben's Waltz (played during the interview by Marian on her piano at home)

To Guest Smiling Ruth:

It was so good of you to list Marian's recordings. The only one I have is the LP called, "Cameo" which I bought at a used record shop somewhere in Los Angeles many years ago (long ago closed now.)
Is there any way for me to find her other recordings? Were any of them released on CD's? I am in California so not sure how I would find them. I have never seen any of her records here accept "Cameo" LP (and that was a long time ago.) Not too easy to find any Australian folk records here anyway.

Also, do you know if she ever toured anywhere in USA & if she did when that was?

Thank you

For Sandra, and others interested, here are the links to the unlisted videos of Marian Henderson on YouTube. They are well worth watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezmJueSueJ0 Sit Yourself Down 1974 Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6nJFf2fmnY Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6yarirkLH4 Part 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB53SSgIMLI Kum Bah Yah at Fairlight Festival 1971

To Lin, Marian's recordings are scarce as hen's teeth. She was approached by someone wanting to re-release her recorded material a few years ago, but she did not give permission. She was suspicious of record companies and publishers, as she never received any return from any of her recordings. I downloaded a few mp3s someone had put on the internet a few years back, but they've now disappeared. Marian herself was not very pleased with Cameo. It was in the days of getting it all down in one take. There's one song she would never play to her friends. I have seen it available, I think from Japan, on CD. It must be a bootleg. Marian was quite amused that Cameo was selling for $500 on eBay. She did like the two songs she recorded on Harry Robertson's "Whale Chasing Men" album. If it's possible to get hold of a copy of that, it's a really good album.

Also, Lin, Marian never toured in the USA, although Cameo was released there, but with one less song than the Australian release (unfortunately not the song she was unhappy with). She toured in Papua New Guinea around the late 1960s or early 1970s, and also went to Ireland with Declan Affley and Peter O'Shaughnessy in about 1970 or 1971 to perform a live theatrical version of The Restless Years in Dublin. She told me they toured around while they were there. She had her young son in tow ... I think he was four years old then. I think she also told me she went to New Zealand once to perform. That's probably the extent of her overseas touring.

I guess he would be in 40's now. Just curious if anyone knows, did he grow up to be a musician/folk singer by any chance? He would have had a lot of exposure to music being his mum was a fine singer/musician and traveled around on the music circuit.

obit: Marian Henderson This obit was published in September & contains several pictures

...................

Marian Henderson: Music was a lifelong passion for the queen of the 1960s folk revival

MARIAN HENDERSON
Musician
1937-2015

Marian Henderson was the queen of the Australian folk revival during the 1960s. With her distinctive, pure alto voice, beautiful face and long hair, she was the epitome of the new folk style. She gave life to old songs such as the convict ballad Van Diemen's Land, and The Streets of Forbes, about bushranger Ben Hall, which she recorded for the Australian cultural history series The Restless Years in 1967.

Alongside jazz and folk club gigs, she toured extensively. Red Cross tours took her island-hopping in light planes around remote New Guinea and Fiji, and to the Cork festival where she "cajoled old Irish tunes into the present". She later featured on ABC television in Jazz Meets Folk, and hosted the music show Sit Yourself Down.
Marian Henderson in 1962.

Henderson's looks and talent attracted much attention from promoters, who invariably wanted to change her music and image but she was always her own woman, and turned down an offer from Harry M. Miller to take over her career: she had no desire to become a pop princess. Integrity to herself and to the music was everything: anything else is degrading to the songwriter and the audience, she said.

Largely self-taught, Henderson would speak lyrics to pull out the drama of a song, and then give it her musical interpretation. Her enunciation was always precise: she hated sloppy lyrics, from be-bop to opera.

Marian Grossman was born in Melbourne on April 16, 1937, the only child of Flight Lieutenant Ernest Grossman and his wife, Amelia (nee Martin). Amelia was a country girl from Porepunkah near Bright, and Ernest also had a rural background. He grew up on a farm at Bowser, near Wangaratta. He learnt the piano and cornet, and often played accompaniment for silent pictures at theatres in the town.
Marian Henderson at Oxford Falls in Sydney's north in 1962.

Like many entertainers, Marian had a peripatetic childhood as the air force moved Ernest from place to place. She went to 13 schools, from city to country and back again, before finishing her education at Essendon High School. Tall and athletic, she excelled at running, high jump, swimming and tennis. Then, in her early teens, Henderson found music – or perhaps music found her. Ernest played cornet in the military band, and she would accompany him at home on the piano, playing by ear as she never learnt to read music. Throughout her subsequent career most of the arrangements she made were committed to memory and rarely written down, unless by someone else.

Essendon High was significant for another reason: fellow student Don Henderson, whom Marian would later marry. At first she "couldn't stand him" but they became an item after a school dance, where he was the only boy who asked her to dance who was taller than her. "So I said yes." Like many girls at that time, Marian left school at 15 to learn shorthand, typing and "how to be elegant no matter what the situation" at business college.

Although her parents did not particularly approve of boyfriend Don, Ernest did make him a present of an Hawaiian guitar, which he adapted for rock 'n' roll. Don and Marian formed a band, The Thunderbirds, but Marian soon lost interest and turned to jazz. She was playing piano with a band, and one evening the vocalist failed to appear. Marian stepped up to the microphone, and at 18 her career as a singer began. She was hired as a rock 'n' roll singer for big bands playing dances at suburban town halls, but would persuade them to also incorporate jazz standards, sung her way.

The '60s was a fertile time for musicians of many styles, and Henderson soon came across some folkies. Although she had never heard of folk music, she quickly learnt five-string banjo, adapted some to guitar and began singing the style for which she was best known.

She and Don had a white wedding "under sufferance" when she was 21 and, gathering their courage, moved to Sydney to escape her parents, whom she described as tyrannical. Don encouraged Marian, writing her poetry and songs, however they divorced, regretfully but amicably, in 1962.

Some time before, Marian and Don had met Tom Baker on Glebe Bridge. Driving across it one day they saw a Bugatti, which was a rare sight, so they turned around and chased it and met its owner. They all became very good friends; after the divorce she and Baker were married, but Marian kept the surname Henderson for performing as she was already known by it. Their only child, Ben, was born in 1967. However, in 1970 Baker fell ill and died, and Marian's life changed.

She told fellow musician and historian Alex Hood, in recordings he made in 2002, now archived at the NLA, "working as a single mother to put shoes on my son, pay off mortgage, [I] put up with a lot." Sexual discrimination, and advancement via the casting couch, were rife in the industry (Now, she told Hood, "I could sue the bastards.")

But Henderson was a fighter, determined to carry on, and do things her way. For the next decade she worked in television, made recordings, including the Cameo album (which disappointed her – it was in at lunchtime and out by dinner, she remembered, with no time for revision) and many hundreds of live performances.

The second act of Henderson's life began in the late 1970s, with a move away from Sydney to laid-back Lismore. Her son was nine, and she effectively retired from music. Her final big tour was for the (then) Arts Council, driving the length and breadth of NSW by herself in her Ford Escort.

Mother and son settled into a quieter way of life, but Henderson was deeply artistic and soon was studying visual arts, costume design, and then teaching painting and music. After eight years she moved to Nimbin, to have more space. The little town's art scene was an attraction, and she knew many people there.

Henderson remained a modest and very private person, with some inherent contradictions. According to Ben she didn't really enjoy the company of large numbers of people at the same time … but she came alive on stage: "If she could have got away with just being a recording star she may have done that, although I also know she enjoyed revving up a crowd."

In her later years Henderson lived independently, and had a great circle of friends. She loved camping, the beach, and her gardens were renowned. Music remained her passion, and she would "try out" all types of contemporary music, even if it was not to her taste.

Three years before she died, Marian Henderson was diagnosed with cancer. She declined surgery, in order to live the best life she could for as long as possible. In her final six months she lived with Ben and his wife Madonna at Mt Mee, inland from Caboolture.

After her death, a large group of friends gathered at her beloved Brunswick Heads, to celebrate her life and music, and to scatter her ashes onto the sea.

There are also now another 8 tracks by Marian on YouTube from the two EPs that were available in 1964 via the PIX Magazine.
[I recall my late Partner, Paul Lawler, saying he bought these when he first arrived in Oz from Liverpool in '64 and he then learnt all the songs!]

The songs are :
Peter Clarke
The Old Bark Hut
The Springtime It Brings On The Shearing
Euabalong Ball
Van Dieman's Land
Botany Bay
Jim Jones
Waltzing Matilda, QLD version

They can be found on this channel :

YAH!

I just noticed how long her 2015 obit was. Somehow I posted part of it twice! (oops)

Well, it was very helpful that you posted the entire text of the obituary....even though you posted parts of it THREE times! I think I've got it fixed.
It was a pleasure to read Henderson's story and listen to her music.

With reference to earlier messages in this thread and culling relevant info from them, I have created a Wikipedia page for Marian here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_Henderson . Further input / corrections etc. are welcome (noting that all WP content must ostensibly be sourceable i.e. published in some reputable form - not a blog or discussion forum). I will add a photo from one of her album/EP release covers in a little while (while not public domain, this is deemed "fair use" where no other alternative is available).

Regards - Tony

Thanks Tony, her wider recognition is very welcome to long-time MH appreciators like myself!

Also, I have located an MP3 of her "Moon & Mice" track - almost my top favourite! - and I will upload to YT soon(ish).   :)

Hi all, you will notice that Marian actually made four EPs for the Pix label in association with Pix magazine, not 3 (or 2), all in 1964 it seems. Details are here: http://www.45cat.com/label/pix

Clicking on any of the listed items (the record label) leads to additional images of cover art/liner notes etc. A great resource! Cheers - Tony

WoW! I had no idea there were others - Thanks Tony!

PIX mags from 1938 to 1954 have been digitized by State Ref - wonder when 1964 will be available?!

Here's a nice colour pic and article on Marian in full 1970s "popular singer" guise: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/44801825

Perhaps more Olivia Newton-John than Joan Baez at this time, but I am guessing not much of a living to be made on the Oz folk circuit alone... we should probably give credit to ABC Television for giving acoustic/folk artists a platform beyond the "folk boom" years, under the guise of contemporary entertainment.

Cheers - Tony

I am not having any luck finding footage on YouTube from the Australian ABC TV show mentioned in that 1974 AWW article via TROVE, that Tony linked to, last post :
"Sit Yourself Down, Take a Look Around", presented by Marian Henderson, 1974.

It is only by hitting on the links given in the post by "Guest, Smiling Ruth" on 16 June 2015, that I can see the one episode (in 3 parts) :

It's excellent and I can't understand why I never saw any Eps back in the day - maybe it was never shown in Western Australia??!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezmJueSueJ0 Sit Yourself Down 1974 Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6nJFf2fmnY Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6yarirkLH4 Part 3

ALSO on Farkle Berry's channel is a clip of ABC TV's GTK (i.e. "Get To Know") entitled : "Folkies. The Sydney Folk Scene. GTK 1970", which includes a brief footage of Marian Henderson, as well as some other Sydney Folk luminaries!! It is found under "Greg Quill's Country Radio" :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzdqbHKnfTY&list=PLVzh0FCa6UHrnH4RYLaQZG74uDb41Hdp4&index=8&t=0s

If you have an interest in Marian's music, be advised to save these links!!!
But let's just hope "Farkle Berry"s unlisted YT channel stays online!!

ENJOY!
Cheers, R-J

Thanks Rich-Joy, I have added the new Youtube link "Folkies. The Sydney Folk Scene. GTK 1970" to the Marian Henderson wikipedia page under "External Links" (I had one to the "Sit Yourself Down" parts on Youtube already).

Cheers and thanks for the new info,

That's why I like Wikipedia - a good collation point for such material.

BTW you can see a list of other Wiki pages I have either authored or contributed to here - along with original photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, for use in Wikipedia articles and elsewhere :)

After listening to various recording of Marian Henderson on youtube, It would be a great shame to have her voice lost, would it be possible to have a tribute album (CD) made of her recordings much in the style of David Alexander and Liz Johnson ?
