I just went on a cruise, an outside the dining room of the boat was a copy of an Impressionist (?) painting. I know I've seen the original, but can't recall the painter.

It shows a young woman in a white dress, standing on a grassy bank slightly above a seaside beach. The dress is white, circa 1890. The skirt has tiers, and the tiers are edged in black ribbon. She is holding a parasol. The sky is blue with a few clouds, and sea is in the distance.

Does anybody recognize this work?

MGM Lion, that very well could be it. The black trim and the sea could have been added later. Certainly your nominee is very close. Thanks

were there any other people in the painting? there is one Renoir I think where the lady has a parasol and a young boy nearby. monet also had one where there were two ladies looking out to sea forget the name for now.

Jack Vettriano is the name that always springs to my mind when seaside paintings crop up. His work is much later than your painting but he did copy a lot of impressionists from other eras.

I think I do, but it's not one of the ones I can find online. What I remember has her right shoulder to the viewer and very strong 'impressionist' lighting. Someone sent me a postcard of it. Searching brought up a page (LINK) with this introduction "The image of women at the seaside in elegant white gowns was a popular subject for Impressionist painters." So there could be a lot of them about !

Another candidate could be A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Seurat.
It doesn't tick all your boxes, but it's close.

It turns out that MGM Lion hit the nail right on the head. The DH took a photo of the painting while on the boat, and comparing the two shows that the Monet MGM mentioned above was definitely the source for the decoration. Even the boy, (whom I hadn't noticed) was in the background.

Comparing the two shows why people appreciate Monet. Monet's clouds are luminous, and his flowers, though impressionist, are unmistakably flowers. I don't have words to describe how real he made the drapery of his wife's gown. The copy, which was done with matte paints, merely conveyed the idea of the original, but lacked life. And given the setting and the purpose of it, that is probably all right.

I have been musing on the psychology of that copy. There was a lot of drinking on the ship, and I think the boat owners wanted to convey, "Get high if you want, but this is a classy place. Don't get wasted."

The cruise visited the west coast of Norway, and it was splendid.

Dave, I just followed your link to Jack Vettriano. I didn't recognize his name, but I've seen that famous painting.

The first thing that hit me about that painting was the stoic misery of the servants, especially the maid. She looks cold and wind-blown, and her shoes are totally useless against the cold water of the sea. The butler displays an old man's proud, erect stoicism, but he's just as cold.   

Can't the critics see that?
