No need to be so snippy Ed. I took the invitation to FIND OUT MORE as exactly that. I knew perfectly well that if I said Yes to making changes to my computer, it WOULD install, and I DON'T want it to yet, but I DID want more info first. Clear now??
That's just Microsoft being sneaky.

To 'GUEST,Ed' - Tattie Bogle said 'I did follow its invitation to "get more info".' That is NOT an instruction to install anything.

I am very interested in the message from 'GUEST,Woodsie':
I don't want any trashy apps (I don't want ANY apps), and I really DON'T want Cortana!
But if it lets you convert it to Windows 7, then that IS worth considering.

Rumncoke, I'm guessing you might like to download the Media Creation Tool and copy it to a DVD or flash drive - and then install Windows 10 from that.

I went through the reservation/gradual download process, and the installation went flawlessly. It took quite a while, but the first 30 minutes of the process required no input from me. So, I went to dinner. The remaining part of installation required me to make a few choices. Fortified with dinner, I could handle it.

All in all, the process took about 45 minutes, and went without a hitch.

The new operating system used all my settings, so the new system doesn't look or work much differently from Windows 8.1. I was hoping for more dramatic changes because I like new toys to play with, but this upgrade seems quite satisfactory.

One of the computers has installed Windows 10, but this one continues to fail, even with every hint and tip suggested on screen being followed.

The same error comes up every time.

I waited for the notification from Windows, it came this morning and without me doing anything it downloaded perfectly.

Tattie Bogle,

You worry that the programme may

"allow Microsoft to make changes to your computer" so at that point, I backed off and said no, as I'm not ready to let it install itself

How else, exactly do you expect it to install?

Yes, I'm now getting the Windows 10 toolbar icon throwing out an invitation to "find out more" at regular intervals: it seems to suggest some sort of urgency, but I know you have up to a year to make the change.
I did follow its invitation to "get more info" and the next screen came up with "allow Microsoft to make changes to your computer" so at that point, I backed off and said no, as I'm not ready to let it install itself yet! Then it said any changes would have to be done by an administrator: AFAIK I AM the one and only administrator on this machine!

One more warning about aspects of WIN10 and security..A piece of 'freeware' that purports to help seems to do just the opposite

"Do Not Spy"

Rule of thumb, don't install any new operating system until they have had at least 6 months to find all the bugs. My wife's laptop will stay at Windows 7 for at least that long, and on mine I am resisting apple's daily urgings to "upgrade" to Yosemite.

I'll probably need to upgrade my laptop in another year. I'll stick with 7 until then and then just get the current release pre-installed.

Lady Hillary sent me this one yesterday--just another reason to hold off on Win 10--

Why can't we have a decent OS and privacy at the same time?

Don't believe that Mac is any better.

I'm guessing yes. I haven't noticed anything's gone, although after installation, things have moved a bit. That icon thing is what was supposed to happen. You'll get an e-mail when W-10 has been downloaded, asking you to say when you want to do the upgrade. You DO have to temporarily disable your anti-virus when you upgrade, as you're changing things that your anti-virus is going to get offended about.

I did get an endless "we're working on it" message.
I shut the computer off, went to bed and tried again this morning.
I figured out I had to switch off my anti-virus, did so, and the upgrade went fine. You have to watch out, when it asks you about your preferences, it doesn't try to take over your browser with the current version of Internet Explorer, "Edge", but that's easy.

I still haven't poked around much. I just noticed that everything in the Start button (bottom left) is in alphabetical order. Me like!

I haven't installed Windows 10 yet. But funnily enough, Google Chrome has suddenly disappeared from my toolbar. Coincidence?

Having found the "invitation" again, I decided in a moment of recklessness to at least download Win 10, for fear I mightn't find it again if I switched off the computer in the meantime. Installation seems to require a separate if equally ill-informed decision.

Seeking to canvass opinion from a wider sample of users, I then went looking for the Windows 10 hashtag on Twitter. As soon as I had typed as far as "#Win...", up popped "#Windows10fail", followed by "#Windows10".

I think that answers my question.

Oh dear God.

I just got the invitation to book an upgrade. On the basis that anything must be better than Windows 8, I responded positively - though only after temporarily losing it as I played the supposed features video that's just a bland advertisement, and then coujldn't find the Windows 10 screen anywhere. Eventually I noticed a new Windows icon on the bottom right of my screen.

Truly, this does indeed not inspire confidence.

Now I'm very unsure about downloading and installing it.

Will watch the discussion here with interest.

Any rumours of a likely forthcoming Windows 10.2?

I used Windows Media Center in the way they apparently originally designed it (with a receiver in my computer that could play on any WMC-loaded computer around the house, including streaming to the big television in the living room). This is my only DVR device. But most people didn't use it for anything but playing of DVDs, and Microsoft stopped supporting it with the add-ons first, and then took away the wonderful schedule. I'm looking into KODI (a spinoff from the XBox player) and/or a way to use a DVR software with the schedules from Schedules Direct. I will report my findings here. I can look at the Yahoo version of Zap2it (TV listings then tell the WMC manually what channel, date, and time to play, but it doesn't load any information with it, and I don't see a way to load the program name into the file, at least, not easily.

P.S. Zap2it changed how their listings appear last year, and it was less streamlined. But Yahoo also supplies listing using the Zap2it data, and they use the old page design, so I get my listings via Yahoo now, same logon. Whatever.

It's supposed to be around 3 GB (according to the information in the app). How long it will take depends entirely on the speed of your connection.

I reserved the Upgrade via the app. For the past 48 hours, the app has been telling me that the Upgrade is downloading in background, and that it will notify me when I can run the installation process. The app has a 'View Progress of Download' button, but when I hit the button, the app closes.

Does anyone know how long the download should take? This situation does notinstil confidence! 😳

The PC is a recent purchase, I am still lamenting the lack of the media centre.

It is set up in Classic style, because the latest appearance doesn't suit how I work, but it ought to have upgraded with no problem I can see, unless it is something we are not being told.
There was something about having to reinstall something to do with language which came up on one attempt, but just at the moment it is wasting time and downloading by trying to update itself.

We've had an invitation to upgrade in the system tray for some time, but that vanished shortly before the new OS was due to come on line.

Well, yes, as I suggested elsewhere the invitation was to pre-book the upgrade, ofcourse it was to go once the roll out had started.

If you had the app, did to run the compatibility test it offered to see if your machine was suitable to upgrade?

I tried the manual upgrade, that failed too.

We've had an invitation to upgrade in the system tray for some time, but that vanished shortly before the new OS was due to come on line.

We should be able to upgrade, there is no reason I can see for the failure.

It doesn't make me breakfast or suck my bits

As a deployment of an operating system that doesn't get in the way or tax my old brain into having to learn something (and have a background system that will upgrade for along time) - I think it is a great technological achievement

Well after all the waiting and anticipation Windows 10 -What a load of tripe/hype.
The "get windows 10 app didn't work so I just downloaded it from microsoft's site - see this link:

Microsoft Windows 10 official site

The only differences (not improvements) were:
The return of the childish "picture book" icons in the start menu along with a load of trashy "apps" including "Candy Crush"

Cortana - I was looking forward to this feature - but it's just a glorified portal to that crap search thing called "Bing"

Internet Explorer (now re-branded "edge") where you are locked to F***king "bing" again

There is one EXCELLENT feature though the ability to roll back to windows 7 - dunnit!!!!

What's the point of this trash?- if anybody can tell me I would be amazed

Did you go there and try to download, or did they send you a notice telling you it is ready for you to install? Try requesting to install and wait until they tell you it is time.

Having tried three times to download and install Windows 10 I wondered if anyone had any hints

I tried turning off the antivirus and anti spam, still no go.

I get error 30070003.
Using the hints to fix did not help with that.

Has anyone managed to get it working?
