Since some destructive mod has closed the thread I started about this, here goes with another one.

We now have some preliminary figures about how frequently Zika causes microcephaly:

http://newsdaily.com/2016/03/study-strengthens-zika-microcephaly-link-women-and-babies-at-risk/

1% of all infected pregnant women adds up to a lot of cases. Catastrophic for the family affected, but perhaps not for the society as a whole - the implication of which, for the anti-abortion cultists who hold power in almost all of Latin America, is that the affected families can be treated as disposable garbage, the same way they treat rape victims. It would take a much higher incidence to shock them into a sense of moral responsibility.

Since argumentative members and guests have trashed more threads than you can count, suggesting that closure is the fault of moderation is a non-starter.

Sometimes the wording of the op is designed to set off arguments, then when the thread is closed, original posters complain. Happens quite often.
Typo corrected, but asking for corrections places an unnecessary burden on moderators. If you want to correct a post, post it a second time, with corrections. Quite likely, a moderator will notice the duplication and they're supposed to delete the earlier copies of duplicate posts. And if they fail to notice the duplication, the world will not come to an end.

(And kindly stop the pointless wittering. Especially when it's just meta-wittering about the wittering of other forum users with no sense of when to shut up. Deponent further sayeth not).

The effect of abortion restrictions in Texas:

http://newsdaily.com/2016/03/getting-abortions-in-texas-has-become-harder-for-some-women/

There is a pretty strong correlation between the Zika risk depected in that map and the restrictiveness of local abortion regulations.

Facts and risk factors will not sway abortion opponents in Texas; they're off in their own ideological world.

Much better understanding of how Zika causes microcephaly:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/03/160330184246.htm

i.e. we are now very far past the stage of debating whether the two are linked, the questions are about exactly how the virus does it. This takes it to the genetic level; we still don't know the exact protein activity involved.

This is warped beyond belief. The Republicans refuse to allow preventive measures against Zika to be funded without stealing the money from programmes to fight Ebola:

How the fuck do those scum live with themselves?

The CDC is edited but also closest to the source.

Earth will become a planet of Blunt Skulls by the year 2019 while the remaining large cranium survivors will be dumbed down by lead pipes and Monsanto chemicals. Surrender to the Conehead hybrids is only a matter of time.

It is pretty obvious that a program of scanning and free abortions in affected cases is a desirable palliator.

Jack, I think they live with themselves because they are suffering from something similar, but not so easily spotted, as microencephaly.

It looks, BTW, as if Zika induced microencephaly, is different from other manifestations - I've seen accounts of a woman functioning fully in society, up to university level. Not, I think, a Republican. But what has been reported from Brazil is something else, and very scarey.

That the virus can cross the placenta, unlike other viruses is something that really needs to be addressed, and fast. It could do a lot of other damage. It can cross the brain barrier as well, obviously.

And it produces beings who can do nothing but scream, who cannot feed properly.

Abortion will obviously not be seen as helpful.

That describes most of the microcephalic kids I've seen. Perhaps half are capable of social interaction, but I've never seen one who had any language.

Researchers at the University of São Paulo in Brazil and their colleagues reported in Nature that the Brazilian strain of the virus could cross the placentas of pregnant mice, resulting in microcephaly in developing embryos. Meanwhile, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported similar findings in Cell Stem Cell after having studied a different infection route. And researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that Zika can infect pregnant, immune-deficient mice and their fetuses, causing restricted growth and fetal death; their findings were published in Cell.
