Hi all,
I was recently at a Daoiri Farrell gig. I wrote down a few words which allowed me to track down most of my favourite songs, but one eludes me. It was about a man whose wife is violent towards him so he pushes her into a bog where she drowns. I suspect it's Irish, all things considered, but not sure. The name Jean may be involved (I was writing in the dark and it's not entirely comprehensible :) )
If it's in the DB, I'm looking wrong...
Any thoughts?

Was the song in question performed by Daoiri Farrell? If so, there is a song about murder and bogs (but not wives) performed by him called "The Creggan White Hare).

That's my best guess for now. Have any more lyrics or tunes?

Killieburne Brae or The Farmers Curst Wife or some variation of the tune? Sounds like it fits the description to me. The only issue is I can't find anything online of him recording the song. Not a bog, but brae could be what you wrote and couldn't read it.

Closer, but no - this was definitely a murder. The word may indeed not be bog... marsh, fen? I wrote "wife bog murder"!
I got the feeling it was something Daoiri was doing for fun rather than part of his recorded core repertoire...

I don't always find the song but when making a note of song lyrics I like I try to pick a phrase which sounds quite particular.
And when I write it down I put "quote marks" round the phrase. Otherwise it's all a messy jumble in my head
and on the paper.

It was a fortuitous gig - I was on a holiday tour in Ireland, someone just asked the guide if we could go to hear some Irish music!

Daoiri kindly replied to my message on FB and gave me a lead - it was rearranged and recorded by Fergus Russell on his album Landless and Free.
He didn't tell me the song name though and I can't find a track listing (assuming that would help)... can anyone pick up the thread from there? Or would it be a breach of etiquette to not just buy the album? :)

I don't know if it's the same song, but back in the seventies we recorded an elderly singer/storyteller in North County Clare, Pat MacNamara, who had a large number of songs and stories, including quite a number we had never heard before or only knew about by reputation - one of them was a fragment of on which we listed as 'Into the bog with her'

Ah, brilliant! The Claddagh Records one is the one that confused my by not having a full track listing.

This explains why I thought the name Jean might be involved - I'd written "poor jean?" above "bog murder"!
It seems a very different set of lyrics to those normally attached to the name (at least by the thread on the subject here :) ). "Into the bog with her" sounds about right, I'd like to know about that whether its the same thing or not!
So, anyone know the lyrics to the murderous version of Paudeen O'Rafferty?
