Subject: Lyr Add: I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS (Rox) From: _gargoyle Date: 15 Dec 99 - 09:53 PM I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS Words and music by John Rox
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I can see me now on Christmas morning,
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Mom says the hippo would eat me up, but then
There's lots of room for him in our two-car garage
I can see me now on Christmas morning,
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas

MIDI file: hippo.mid Timebase: 192 Text: I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the January 15 MIDItext 98 software and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: GUEST,Catwoman Date: 19 Dec 00 - 09:36 PM I have tried and tried, and I can't figure out how to convert from text to midi. The instructions leave out some information needed I thnk by the less than adept computer user. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: Snuffy Date: 20 Dec 00 - 08:46 AM Highlight just the RED bits on the screen and copy them into a file called (say) Hippo.txt on your desktop. Then just drag that file over the Text2midi icon until you see a "+" and release the mouse. Sometimes these programs put the midi in a weird directory so the use FIND from the Windows start menu to look for "Hippo.mid" Good luck. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 Dec 00 - 09:04 AM Please - a hippopotamus is not just for Christmas, it's for life! Every January the animal sanctuaries are crowded out with unwanted hippos who have been dumped on their doorsteps... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: MMario Date: 20 Dec 00 - 09:34 AM Catwoman - every once in a while for some wierd reason a text editor will insert a blank space at the beginning of each line. if it won't convert for you, try opening the text file in wordpad or something like that and checking to make sure you don't have those excess blanks. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Dec 00 - 11:31 AM Nah....can't happen Mario. First, as a charter member and board member, I have tenure. Second, this would also require that the other three board members can muster up the initiative between them to do anything, which is not only unlikely, but frankly impossible as they are all completely swamped with winding their watches, evacuating their bladders, and trying to get the little BB's in the eyes of the bear. I'd explain this further except I take lasix and I have to piss, I realize mt watch is 4 hours off, and I gotta' go find my bear puzzle. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: NightWing Date: 20 Dec 00 - 04:36 PM Dang it! Didn't Shel Silverstein write a poem something like this? Where the Sidewalk Ends? A Light in the Attic? Anybody remember? Delightful!

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 21 Dec 00 - 01:52 PM Shel Silverstein wrote a wonderful children's book away back when named Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros? I have a copy and would not trade or sell for all the tea, etc. Sarah |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: MMario Date: 21 Dec 00 - 02:00 PM I have to admit every time I see this thread I want to post something along the lines of "Is your oven big enough? Most people would settle for a ham or a turkey" But I won't. Not even though I have now spent days wpndering what kind of dressing one would use with hippo. I would think Water chessnuts would have to be in it somewhere. And how do you season a hippo? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 22 Dec 00 - 11:11 AM MMario: The base of the dressing is stale watercress sandwiches, torn into small pieces. (I usually just leave them on the countertop and all over the garage overnight.) The difficult part is obtaining the Nile water here in the U.S., but an abolute must if the seasoning for the dressing is going to be right. I generally order it in mid-July to have time to deal with import red tape. Other than that, the usual oysters, celery, onions, rice (or cornbread), along with your ordinary holiday herbs and spices, multiplied by 500, will get you a fine Hippodressing -- no sage, though; it clashes with the watercress. The water chestnuts, you're right, do figure, but they are laid over the hippo, much as one would lay sliced onions over a roast. For the rest, it's just minced garlic and salt and pepper to taste -- usually no more than a gallon of the former and five or six pounds each of the latter. It's not very difficult, actually, just sort of time-consuming in a small kitchen. Oh, and four or twelve freezers for the leftovers are useful. Next month, Leftover Hippo Pot Pie... Sarah |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: MMario Date: 22 Dec 00 - 11:29 AM thank you sarah. Maybe I'll get a decent nights sleep now. It has been driving me nutty...okay, nuttier. |

Subject: Tune Add: I want a hippopotamus for christmas From: Genie Date: 24 Nov 02 - 02:36 PM The link John in Brisbane posted no longer works, for the ABC file. But I did find Spaw's link to the MP3 and wav. file website. (My scrolling finger must've had spasms, and I missed Spaw's link several times while searching the thread.) Thanks for pointing it out, Allan, and thanks to Spaw for having got up off the couch to post it. :-) And, oh, yes, thanks for the recipes, folks! Genie |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas From: Genie Date: 11 Dec 08 - 07:23 PM Someone in another thread mentioned "the story behind" this song. Anyone know it and care to share it? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas From: Uncle Phil Date: 12 Dec 08 - 12:46 AM The short version of the story is that the song was used as a fund-raiser to buy a hippopotamus for the Oklahoma City zoo. They raised $3000 and the Okie city zoo got a hippo name Matilda. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Dec 08 - 03:02 AM The long version is that the fund raising was to actually buy a hippo for Gayla Peevey the ten-year old who sang the song. Believe it or not they managed to raise the money and presented the hippo to her - despite promising to keep the hippo in the two car garage in the song she had enough sense to hand it over to Oklahoma City Zoo. (How long do hippos live? Is it still there?) |
