I am seeking songs that emphasize the human side of Christmas. I know about the Cherry Tree Carol. Any others? Thanks and peace, s.

That's a lovely one, Anon- I don't know it. My Latin is a bit shaky- what's the translation?

Hee's one from Quebec.

D'ou viens-tu, bergere,
d'ou viens tu?
Je viens de l'etable,
De m'y promener;
J'ai vu un miracle
Ce soir arrive..

Qu'as tu vu, bergere,
Qu'as tu vu?
Ja vu dans la creche
Un Petit Enfant
Sur la paille fraiche
Mis bien tendrement.

Rien de plus bergere,
Rien de Plus?
Sainte Marie, sa mere,
Lui fait boire du lait,
Saint Joseph, son pere
Qui tremble de froid.

Rien de plus bergere,
Rien de Plus?
Ya la boeuf et l'ane
Qui sont par devant;
Avec leur haleine
Rechauffant l'Enfant.

Rien de plus bergere,
Rien de Plus?
Ya trois petits anges
Descendus du ciel,
Chantant les louanges
Du Pere Eternal.

There should be various accents on this, but I can't do them easily. And there's a tune, which I could email to you if you want it.

I have been searching for the words to a French Carol. Perhaps someone here would be kind enough to post them for me? "Il est ne' le divin enfant" (even my sons French teacher could not find them for me) I do love Christmas Carols. Thank you in anticipation of the favour of a reply. Dave

Here you are - surely it can't be a French French teacher? It'd be like not knowing "Away in a Manger" for a teacher in an English speaking country. (Or am I being naive about teachers these days?):

Il est ne, le divin enfant
Jouez hautbois, resonnez, musettes!
Il est ne, le divin enfant
Chantons tous son avenement!

Depuis plus de quatre mille ans
Nous le promettainet les Prophetes;
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans
Nous attendins cet heureux temps.

Une etable est son logement
Un peu de paille est sa couchette
Une etavle est son logement
Pour un Dieue quel abaissement.

Ah! Qu'il est beau! qu'il est charmant!
Ah! que des graces sont parfaits!
Ah! Qu'il est beau! qu'il est charmant!
Qu'il est doux, ce divin Enfact.

O Jesus, o Roi tout-puissant
Tout petit enfant que vous etes.
O Jesus, o Roi tout-puissant
Regnez sur nous enteirement.

Il est ne, le divin enfant
Jouez hautbois, resonnez, musettes!
Il est ne, le divin enfant
Chantons tous son avenement!

Teachers are "so busy" and probably would not have time to be as courteous and kind as the Mudcatters. Thank you my family and I love this carol, but could not get the words; and we hate singing in "Franglais" (even asked our Quebec friends who were raised French Canadians but they could not find it) Joyeux Noel mes amis. Now that we're out from beneath Christmas' crushing load, I thought I might refresh this one. Thanks for the answers so far, especially McGrath and the anonymous Latin scholar. Am having fun translating that.

Anyone else? Thanks for your time Love and Peace, s.

Well... I'm kinda partial to Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow from Jethro Tull.... Is that human enough? Lemme see if I can remember this one....

Jack Frost And The Hooded Crow Through long December nights we talk in words of rain or snow,
while you, through chattering teeth, reply and curse us as you go.
Why not spare a thought this day for those who have no flame
to warm their bones at Christmas time?
Say Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow.

Now as the last broad oak leaf falls, we beg: consider this:
there's some who have no coin to save for turkey, wine or gifts.
No children's laughter round the fire, no family left to know.
So lend a warm and a helping hand:
say Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow.

As holly pricks and ivy clings, your fate is none too clear.
The Lord may find you wanting, let your good fortune disappear.
All homely comforts blown away and all that's left to show
is to share your joy at Christmas time
with Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow.

I'll see if I can thnk of any others....

It has been my intention for some time to put together a tape of what, for want of a better description, I was calling Not-quite-Christmas songs. "Human" is probably more accurate, though it lacks pizazz. Although this may not be exactly what you are looking for, but, here are a few that I have slated for the collection:

The Anti-Carol (by Frank Poole?)
No Christmas In Kentucky (Phil Ochs)
Christmas In Prison (John Prine)
First Christmas (Stan Rogers)
Christmas in the Snow (Peter&Lou Berryman)
Christmas in NY (The Pogues)
St.Stephen's Day Murders (Elvis Costello)

Any others along these lines?

So... songs sorta about Christmas without being from K-tel eh?!?

Well.. let's look into the Tickle Trunk here and see what I can dig up...

3 more from Tull A Christmas Song (Living In The Past) Another Christmas Song (Rock Island) Solstice Bells (Songs From The Wood)

Dram To Warm The Piper by Danny Carnahan(sp?) is a great Newy Years Ever tune...

At Last I'm Ready For Christmas by Stan Rogers, I think is gonna become a standard of mine for Boxing Day gigs...

Bowser & Blue had some really funny stuff on thier X-as special this year, "2 nust Roasting On An Open Fire" Like Kevin "Bloody" Wison's "Hey Santa! Where's My F#kin' Bike?"....

Woudln't Leonard Cohens "Famous Blue Raincoat" be an X-masy song??

Miss Fogartys Christmas Cake is nearly always good for a laugh, especially in July!

My song "Come In And Know Me Better Man" is ummm... "Seasonally Inspired"... at least that's what I tell people...

That's it for now.. fell free to email me and I can help ya find these tunes I guess...

What about The Pogues, Fairytale of New York:

It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank... etc

Clinton, thanks for the references to Jethro Tull Christmas songs - I remember hearing one about 25 years ago and I have been trying to remember the words and tune and trying to find it on the JT albums my hubby has. All I remember about it was: when you are sitting down at your Christmas dinner think of the people who don't have a dinner to sit down to.

Helen

Helen...

Looking for Tull Lyrics, look no further than The Cup Of Wonder

A great site for lyrics with annotations and such...

Happy Hunting...

I think the tune you're looking for is "A Christmas Song" on Living In The Past...

Hey Santa, pass us that bottle will ya...

;-)
