Subject: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: robomatic Date: 15 Oct 17 - 11:48 AM Jeremy the Snail is no more. He apparantly died of natural causes, although I don't get how you can die of natural causes when you live in a refrigerator. I suggest that the story of Jeremy is another example of what makes the U.K. great. |

Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Donuel Date: 15 Oct 17 - 12:35 PM oops Things spin left in the north and right in south due to Coriolis effect |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Nigel Parsons Date: 15 Oct 17 - 12:57 PM I've never really thought that spinning right (or left) made any sense as a description of direction. I know some people think that most screws, taps (faucets), and bolts tighten in one direction, and may even remind themselves that it is "Lefty loosey, righty tighty". But that never explains the movement. If you are turning a screwdriver, one part of the screwdriver is turning to the right, but the other half is turning to the left. Clockwise, and anti-clockwise (or counter-clockwise) make more sense as descriptive terms as they describe the perceived direction of rotation (to anyone who can remember what an analogue clock-face or watch-face looks like). While the minute hand moves clockwise, it moves to the right when moving between the 12 and the 3, then moves to the left when moving between the 3 and the 9 before moving right again to move to the 12. "Clockwise" describes this motion perfectly. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Donuel Date: 15 Oct 17 - 01:16 PM Not a clock as seen in a mirror. Life itself is composed exclusively of left hand molecules. Atoms may spin left or right when entangled. Watch TV in a mirror and all American cars become English. Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: DMcG Date: 15 Oct 17 - 01:46 PM I remember being confused when told in a dance the people moved round the room clockwise. Is that seen from above or below? |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: akenaton Date: 15 Oct 17 - 01:51 PM We've always had left hand threads.....usually on Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Donuel Date: 15 Oct 17 - 04:10 PM Reading text in a mirror is easy until words exceed 8 letters. When stringing picture hanging wire I have sometimes mistranslated up from down. Add one more direction /dimension and try to sense a hypercube, I forget how I got a glimpse the last time I felt successful in seeing a hypercube. Now without GPS I'm practically lost in space. |

Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Mr Red Date: 16 Oct 17 - 04:43 AM We've always had left hand threads Oh give Ake a break - it was funny. I remember being confused when told in a dance the people moved round the room clockwise depends on the dance "Circle Waltz" (eg) the progression is anti-clock. "Chapelloise" we start off anti-clock then dance backwards and return with a mirror manoeuvre*, but the "women"** progress clock. "Old Swan Gallop" the progression depends on which number you are. IMNSHO clockwise refers to "as seen from above" because you can imagine being on the balcony looking down, ie "implied". But unless there is a glass floor and a basement it can't easily be imagined from below. You would get far less women to events on a glass floor methinks. *French dance, English English spelling. **blokettes welcome but do try to dance backwards and in high heels. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: akenaton Date: 16 Oct 17 - 10:47 AM :0) Thanks Mr R, you must be a "practical" man don't suppose many of the "academics" on here have heard of such a thing, screw them. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Donuel Date: 16 Oct 17 - 03:08 PM If it really is 'lefties' few left handed people realize that it is more likely they are the survivor of being twins very early in gestation rather than just being a single fetus and born left handed. For example Obama was probably one of twins but along the way in the womb he absorbed the other guy. Its pretty common. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: peteglasgow Date: 16 Oct 17 - 03:12 PM really? surely not. are we absorbent then? |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Oct 17 - 06:34 PM That's right, we lefties are absorbent. You can call us "Depends." "Kotex"? |
Subject: RE: BS: More Bad News for Lefties (Jeremy Snail) From: Donuel Date: 17 Oct 17 - 11:02 AM Yep sometimes the twin is not entirely incorporated and leaves a vestigial trace. Some people call it a nubbin. paper towels are absorbent, we recycle. |
