Subject: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Jun 18 - 02:22 PM One especially for Senofou: on tonight's news, it was reported that the current CO2 shortage, which is already affecting beer, lager cider and fizzy drink supplies during the football World Cup of all times, has now extended to CRUMPETS! CO2 is apparently put inside the packaging of such items to prolong their "freshness", and one major UK baker has had to shut down production of those rubbery spongy things called crumpets (not my favourite, can't you guess?) while there is this shortage. (And I thought the bubbles in the crumpets were created from CO2?) The inevitable irony is that we're all being told we create far too much CO2, so can't some of it be harvested to put back into the beer and crumpets? |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 29 Jun 18 - 02:35 PM Aaaaaaaagh! Gaaaaaagh! No! No! What is this fresh hell? No more crumpets? I shall die of withdrawal symptoms. Very bad news Tattie. (sobs loudly) |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Jack Campin Date: 29 Jun 18 - 03:09 PM Real crumpets are raised with yeast. The artificially bubbled ones affected by the CO2 shortage are Warburton's, which are as foul as you'd expect from a Brexit-backing megafoodbiz. (For an even worse experience try their gluten-free ones - bleurgh). |

Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Jun 18 - 03:38 PM And yeast produces CO2, or at least it did when I went to school many years ago! |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 29 Jun 18 - 05:35 PM The CO2 isn't in the product but used around the packaging to prolong the shelf life. It seems that many factories that produce the gas for industrial purposes have closed. I just saw it on the News, and even abattoirs are short of compressed CO2 for their stun guns. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Mr Red Date: 30 Jun 18 - 05:26 AM 22 men in their underpant kicking a bag of wind around (& 22 million referees) create a lot of CO2 Mr Red is off-grid for the football/tennis duration |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 30 Jun 18 - 05:42 AM 22 men and only one underpant! No wonder they're creating wind! hee hee (Sure it's not methane though?) |

Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Jul 18 - 04:46 AM I blame the lager drinkers. (and those drinking from cans/bottles) 'Real Ale' continues to ferment in the cask, and creates its own gas. Let's hear it for real ale drinkers, trying to save the world one pint at a time. I'm doing my bit :) |

Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Donuel Date: 02 Jul 18 - 06:14 PM The fear of beer shortage puts the world Cup in the shade. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 02 Jul 18 - 06:26 PM I don't even like beer! But I like my cider flat and warm! And never "got" crumpets: like I said, they resemble sponges. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Jul 18 - 06:44 PM The crumpet can be a thing of utter beauty. For breakfast that will keep you going until a late lunch, get a small frying pan and put an unjustifiably large knob of butter in it. Arrange to have a very hot plate at the ready plus another wot your breakfast will go on. Melt the butter to medium/high heat and crack three eggs into the pan. Ok, two if you're on a diet. Cover with a lid for precisely two and a half minutes (maybe turn the heat down a bit). There is never any need to baste frying eggs using that method. Meanwhile, par-toast two crumpets in your toaster, just to warm them up. Transfer your fried eggs on to your hot plate. Turn up the heat under your pan and fry the crumpets both sides for a minute (especially the top side). Aim to soak up every last bit of butter. Put crumpets on your breakfast plate and top with the eggs. I don't even bother with salt and pepper. I promise you, you'll live forever. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Mo the caller Date: 03 Jul 18 - 04:33 AM Who wants crumpets when it would be torture to light a fire to toast them at. Winter treat Toasted under the grill on the bottom, then turned over and cheese melted on top makes a good lunch |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 03 Jul 18 - 04:37 AM Steve, I'm going to do a cross-stitch embroidery of your last post in it entirety, frame it and hang it on our sitting-room wall! I think I love you!!! :) |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: JHW Date: 04 Jul 18 - 04:17 AM I suppose this refers to products packed 'in a protective atmosphere'. I hadn't realised CO2 could be used as a protective. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Charmion Date: 04 Jul 18 - 11:58 AM If crumpets are like sponges, Tattie, I would eat a sponge if it came toasted, dripping with melted butter, and topped with marmalade. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 04 Jul 18 - 12:08 PM Ha-ha Charmion: would like to see you do that! Yes, and CO2 is used inside the packaging of many fresh products, not just crumpets, to make them last longer. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Steve Shaw Date: 04 Jul 18 - 01:40 PM Mo, I have that precise lunch twice a week minimum. I recommend three crumpets with Wookey Hole cave-aged cheddar, followed by a spell of digging or a good long walk to work it off. I love you too, Eliza! |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Nick Date: 04 Jul 18 - 04:00 PM When they were talking about being unable to stun pigs because of the lack of CO2 it seemed to me they could hit them with the empty cylinders... |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: keberoxu Date: 05 Jul 18 - 02:53 PM I concur with Tattie Bogle. I thought there was more than enough CO-two and not enough O ... |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 05 Jul 18 - 02:56 PM Couldn't they employ a line of people in the factory who would blow into each crumpet packet and fill it with carbon dioxide? |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Nick Date: 05 Jul 18 - 07:20 PM Creative people blow out CO2. But kissing pigs to sort out a problem is an odd thought and too near politics |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 06 Jul 18 - 06:14 AM You do not need CO2 to make or deliver proper beer. Sainsburies had no basic tonic today. |
Subject: RE: BS: CO2 shortage - Wot, no crumpets? From: Senoufou Date: 06 Jul 18 - 06:55 AM Hahaha Nick! David Cameron seems to have done something...er...similar in his youth! (Well, with a pig's head anyway) |
