First lets get this straight, I do not personally fly Ryanair if I have any other choice.

However, this evening my partner rang me in tears because she booked a flight but got the flight direction back to front.

I want to the web page to correct the booking, but was informed that it could not be changed online. I then did a search for the call centre number - couldn't find it on thir website, but when I called, found that the useless little shits had gone home for the evening.

Upshot, I was so angry with them I threw my £30 cordless phone across the room - the result is that the phone has died.

As far as I am concerned the scum owe me a new phone, and a written apology for being a useless waste of space.

Now that Monarch is no more we are flying BA to Vienna during last week of August for a wedding just accross the border in Bratislava. 3 days after we return we fly BA to Alicante for our regular holiday. We would never dream of using easyjet or the like.

You have to play the game with these guys. Triple check every tiny detail in your booking before you hit send. Apprise yourself of their cabin bag rules and don't even think of risking not sticking to them to the letter. Print off your boarding passes at home. I always think it's worth the extra few quid to reserve your seats if you're not travelling alone, but that's as much as I'm ever going to give 'em in "extras." Mrs Steve and I generally try to travel with just cabin bags, but on the rare occasion that we need to put one in the hold it's just one bag between us. You can beat the buggers as long as you're on the ball!

Incidentally, last year we flew to Milan from Bristol, return, for just over two hundred quid for the two of us. We were each allowed a 15kg hold bag and we were given a meal on each leg. The airline was BMI Regional. Beat THAT, BA!

I have always found Ryanair cheap and efficient. Carefully reading the smallprint applies equally in all walks of life.

I have been stuck on the tarmac in a plane for 12 hours at heathrow and had innumerable enforced stay overs due to cancellations with other airlines. Ryanair has never let me down.

I have normally flown BA, but especially since they got a new chief exec from a low cost airline, I find they are heading very much towards the RyanAir standard. Still a fair way to go, of course, but for long haul they are not my first choice any more.

For long haul I pretty much always fly Emirates or Etihad. Short haul I can put up with Ryanair, Easyjet and Jet2 are better, BA are ok if someone else is paying. KLM are pretty reasonable and Schipol is a decent hub, better than going through Heathrow.

What hub you use largely depends upon where you are going. Schipol is good, Heathrow and Charles de Gaul not a whole lot to choose between them-both a very poor second in my opinion. I used to fly Braathens between Stavanger and Schipol many years ago. I was always amused by cattle class and business class being labelled as Braathens Back, and Braathens Best.

We miss Afriqiyah. They were dirt cheap (operating out of Tripoli) and very reliable. I always enjoyed the flights from several African airports, disembarking in Libya and getting the early morning flight to Gatwick.

It's dreadful if one has a series of connecting flights booked (my husband needs three flights to reach Abidjan from Norwich) and one of the flights is delayed or cancelled. French ATCs are often suddenly on strike. One year it was the French cabin crew (Air France flight) and he missed the stage Norwich to Amsterdam. Luckily, KLM stepped in and got him a last-minute flight.

Our favourite airline is Emirates.

See if you can buy a boomfy couch that looks like a soccer goal. That way, when you throw your phone across the room, you will instinctively aim for the couch and save 30 quid.

[That's funny. Spell-check doesn't recognize 'boomfy.']

When I'm making reservations, I ask the DH to look them over for errors before finalizing things.

The post script to this is that after much searching and clicking what felt like millions of links, we eventually found out that as the booking was less than 24 hours previous, she was entitled to make the correction free of charge.

However, Ryanair's on line, sign posting to the information needed, and the ease of contacting customer service was so shoddy that it led to considerable frustration and time taken on my part (estimated £155 worth of my professional time), and distress on the part of my partner. Particularly - the correction could not be done on line; customer support had 'buggered of home' when I got home from work on Saturday; that when you do find a contact number or on-line support chat they are so overloaded that it is pot luck actually getting through.

My partner has learned two things - be a bit more patient and wait until I get home form work before making the bookings, and not to use the small screen on a smart phone to do it.

And Ryanair still owes me a new cordless homephone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you got it sorted SPB, but all that stress! Very upsetting. As you say, rubbish 'customer services'.

I remember my first transatlantic flight ('London Airport' to Montreal in a Boeing 707). It was with Pan Am, and in those days it was all very 'posh', even in the ordinary class seats. The passengers were in suits and ties (men) and elegant dresses with often a little fur stole and a hat!! (women)

The 'hostesses' were perfumed, coiffed and absolutely beautiful. They treated one like royalty. It was quite dream-like for me (I was very young) The journey took 7 hours to Newfoundland for re-fuelling, then on to Montreal.

Even 'London Airport' was rather basic. (It wasn't called Heathrow in those days)
How times have changed!

Never seen it Nigel - great
Loved the ad too!!

We are in a bit of a hostage situation here in the West of Ireland - they hold the prime position in Shannon - don't fly with them a nd it's a night's stop in Dublin or Cork
They provided us with one of our worst experiences when we visited Barcelona some time ago.

We turned up at Barcelona airport at 9 am for our return journey in time to be informed that our flight was delayed indefinitely
We sat in baking heat for a couple of hours until a young man with a laptop with a link to the Internet circulated the crowd telling us that it had come on the grapevine that they had 'sold' our plane to football supporters going to an International in Germany
The Airport staff (Ryanair has no representatives at airports) were unable to or refused to confirm this
We sat for another two hours until a member of the staff came around and handed out €5 vouchers for refreshment (it bought little more than a coffee and a Kit Kat

By seven o'clock the natives were getting restless - this exploded into loud chanting protests when we were asked to move to another gate as a plane from Bristol was due to land, turn around and take off again from this one
The Airport staff threatened to have security evict us from the airport - this included the numerous mothers carrying babies
The staff told us that or plane had a cracked window and had been worked on for most of the day - we could see from or view of the runway that no work had ever taken place
A couple of hours later we finally got a plane and landed in Shannon around eleven

We drove home with no problem - many of the other passengers were not so lucky - they had missed connecting flights and buses to Galway and Limerick had long stopped running, also the airport restaurants and cafes and bar were closed, so quite a few were faced with a night sleeping in nor very comfortable plastic airport seats, including some of the mothers with children in arms
We received no apology, or explanation from Ryanair - I doubt if anybody else did.

Michael O'Leary is the International Donald Trump of Air travel - fuck him with the blunt end of a rag-mans rusty trumpet
I have little doubt that he is a keen Trump supporter - why wouldn't he be?

My chubby friend Susan (most of my friends were called Susan in those days!) used to let me tag along with her and her dad who worked in the hangars and serviced the aircraft. She lived across the road from the main runway (in Jubilee Cottages, on the Bath Road)

Imagine the tight security nowadays! No-one would EVER be allowed to take their children 'airside' to watch the men at work on the engines!

I've adored aircraft and flights my whole life.(Both parents were in the RAF even before the War, so maybe I've inherited it.)

I used to go plane spotting in my late teens - grew out of it by the time I went to Poly. It used to annoy me when people would turn up en mass just to watch concorde taxi past, then go home after. It was probably the hobby that spared my 'expertise' in information system design 30 years later.

Dick, you know by my stature that is I was to take my frustrations out bodily on people I would come off worse..... If anything, the amount of stress I bottle up at work made this the last straw that broke the camel's back.

People cause unnecessary frustration by trying to do work on a phone that should be done on a real computer. A phone just isn't big enough and doesn't show enough at one time to do a complex job.

For example, I will send out e-mails headed "Three questions for planning rehearsal." Band members look on their phones and answer one or two of them. (They seem to be in too big a hurry to read that there are three questions in the message.)

It's like herding cats.

For a while in the 1960s I lived in Hounslow West under the flight path to Heathrow, so watching aircraft was unavoidable. Sometimes the wind changed and they were taking off. Then the noise was horrendous, but most of the time it was bearable, and some of the aircraft, such as Comets, looked quite elegant and graceful.

British Airways come almost as far down the list for customer satisfaction (3rd from bottom) as Ryanair (2nd from bottom) for short-haul economy flights, according to the latest "Which" survey. Jet2.com is second from top, followed by Norwegian in 3rd place. Musician friends recently used Norwegian to fly from Edinburgh to Spain, simply because they had a more accommodating attitude to taking musical instruments.
Have flown Ryanair on a number of occasions, and not really had any major problems, tho it did seem a bit ludicrous in Rome being told our hold bag was overweight: we then took out various items, strapped them around ourselves: the bag was then OK weight and we were rather warm but no excess charge! Total weight on flight - THE SAME!
As for long-haul from Edinburgh, I would avoid like the plague going anywhere via Heathrow, whih is what some travel agents seem to regard as the be-all and end-all. Flew Crossair and Swissair to Hong King and back some years ago. Air France to Buenos Aires and Singapore (on different occasions) with just one change at Paris CDG.

When I read your post, Tattie Bogle, I was wondering who could possibly rank below both BA and Ryanair in terms of customer satisfaction. Turns out its Vueling, who I had not heard of before. I will give them a wide, wide berth.

Eurowings are also allegedly pretty poor. They seem to be the successor to Germanwings, who lost a lot of business as a result of the French Alps disaster in 2015.

Let's get back to the OP, whee SPB threw his cell phone across the room.

SPB, you did that because you were feeling one of the worst emotions - helpless rage. I'm glad it was a phone and not a pet or a baby.

You were trying to meet two conflicting demands. I call it being twisted. Your partner screwed up the reservation and wanted to be rescued right away. Ryanair is a budget company and wanted you to wait for normal business hours before it would help you. Fury set in, and the poor phone played the price.

Practice thinking some thoughts to defuse helpless rage, such as

I can't do everything.
This was YOUR screw-up.
It's only money.
Ryanair is probably spending most of its cash on safe planes.
It will probably be fine tomorrow.
==========
I' pretty sure that somebody capable of making an airline reservation which goes the wrong way entirely needs help. Set some rules.

"Don's try it on a phone."
"Have a friend look it over."

If people think Ryanair are difficult to contact and their customer services are rubbish, has anyone ever tried to contact HMRC? (the government tax office) I've often lost the will to live waiting while the same music plays over and over, and a robot repeats the same inane drivel. I could have thrown all our furniture against the wall and chewed my own arm off in frustration!

We had a local (Alaska based) Ryan Air (I assumed the owner's first name was 'Ryan'. First time I flew 'em way way back when I was an Alaska newbie, I took a jet flight to Fairbanks, then found a kind of shack you had to walk to for Ryan, weighed in with luggage on bathroom scales, and out to the fourteen passenger Otter (made in Canada). I never had a problem with our Ryan Air despite learning that some co-workers called it "Dyin' with Ryan". Even that time we took off from Shishmaref clearly overloaded and spent the flight at about five hundred feet altitude. Later on they had a major disaster in one of their heavily loaded planes where there was too much reindeer meat stored too far aft. The center of gravity was compromised. Those folk truly died with Ryan and for this and maybe other causes they are no more.

We had another airline, Frontier, again an Alaska original. I think they went under for business reasons, but not before my brother wrote a song about them to the tune of 'Barret's Privateers'.

I often needed help with their online Tax Return (my husband did a little self-employed cleaning and we wanted to declare his earnings in order to be legal.) The wretched page wouldn't load and go on to the next one. I used to call them and it was sheer hell trying to get through.
But you're right David, I (eventually) got a pleasant person who explained with great patience what to do. It was the ridiculous lack of call centre staff, for the volume of calls, that annoyed us. Obviously, every January people are submitting their Tax returns and they should realise that.
I was never so pleased in my life when my husband was offered full-time employment as a school cleaner. He loves the job, loves all the staff, it's only ten minutes from our house and....I'll never again have to deal with his Tax returns. Long live PAYE!!

Yes, and most of HMRC's departments also do 'Webchat' so you don't have to hang on the phone. Just set your computer to make a loud 'Ping' when you get a response. (saves you staring at the screen, you can get on with something else)
A list of departmental helplines is available here: HMRC Helplines Checking a few of the more common I find that at least the following have a Webchat option:
Tax Credits
VAT
Customs
Income Tax
Child Benefit
Self-assessment

They are one of the few organisations who take you seriously when you suggest that they might have a bug in their software (in this case Basic PAYE Tools).

Oh Nigel, I wish I'd known that! But I'm not terribly techno-savvy, and my husband's English is a bit dodgy, so we really were struggling.

Back to airlines, we're always astonished at the difference in air fares depending on when one flies, and with whom. Getting from Norwich to Abidjan is sheer hell. One can do all sorts of combinations, and the fare last year was £1400 return, a huge sum for us to find.

He has to access an airport that flies to Abidjan, and there are Brussels and Paris, with Air Brussels or Air France. Then there's Air Maroc, via Casablance.
Heathrow do some, but how to get down to West London from rural Norwich (£500 return by taxi)
He has four enormous suitcases, so Megabus or the train would be problematic.

However, recently, he's found that Air France do the lot for £400 return (!!!) if booked either months in advance or at the last minute. This means he could afford the taxi down to Heathrow and catch the Air France flight there. But what if the buggers decide to go on strike at a moment's notice?
If only lovely Emirates did Norwich to Cote d'Ivoire direct!

"lost the will to live waiting while the same music plays over and over, and a robot repeats the same inane drivel."

Helpless rage again. Twisted again. You have to hold onto the phone to get help, but you don't want to because of the music and drivel.

Study your phone. Does it have a button that says SP Phone? That's speaker phone. Push it and set the phone down, and you will hear what's on the line. While you listen with one ear, you can be doing something else.

When the agent finally comes on, don't pick the phone up and talk into it or you will hurt the poor person's ears. Leave the phone on the desk and speak into from a distance. 12-16 inches, maybe.

Then again, there's the Webchat feature, as described. The important thing is to avoid twisting followed by helpless rage.

Where is the former Monarch Airline fleet now? We always paid for extra legroom seats, which provided a very comfortable flight.
