Décroittoir certainly brings up lots of pictures of boot-scrapers if you throw it into a Google Image Search. And Wiktionnaire gives its definition as "Lame de fer fixée à l’entrée d’une maison pour que les personnes qui viennent du dehors y grattent la semelle de leurs chaussures avant d’entrer."

Crotte gives rather more graphic results in a Google Image Search.

Is French the only language with a specific verb for shoe-taking-off, by the way?

I did find décrottoir but not in Goggle traduction. (Well maybe now, if they listened).

And looking at the contributions above, I would interpret décrottoir as "mud remover" - in my extremely poor Franglais.

Just to give this a context; I have a page of the ironwork on buildings showing English ones in my Ville as part of a project to document the place in 2017. And "cure-bottes" are disappearing slowly so in my wanderings I photograph them generally, a dedicated website will follow.

During our week of danse Française (et l'Europe) near Moulins/Auvergne we did the touriste thing and just away from the cobbled streets I snapped a few "gratte-pieds". As you do.

It's un décrottoir or "gratte-pieds", "gratte-bottes". Definition, from crotte (B) = mud. Personaly, I never heard it used down here (I'm from "deep South"), we'd call it "un gratte-pieds".

The metal blade (eg fixed to a house) for people to scrape the mud off their boots/shoes/sabots/galloshes etc before entering the premises.

I was told there was a specific word rather than the generic grattoir or racloir but have failed to locate it. Maybe it is a derived word from those like raclette (ice windscreen scraper).

Any ideas anyone?
