Subject: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 06 Dec 18 - 09:52 AM I am alerted by an article in The Atlantic that Trump's declaration of a national emergency (which remains in effect until Sept. 2019) is actually the equivalent of a coup to make our Constitution meaningless. There is a vast set of laws, a parallel universe of power that gives the President dictator status beyond anything I have heard of except the 3rd Reich when he decided to declre a national emergency. Some of those new powers are; To shut down wire communications and internet. To freeze Americans bank accounts To deploy the military and use them as a domestic police force. This needs to be rethought by Congress but will they? America is in a declared national emergency right now and for a year at a time unless the President signs a new one. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 06 Dec 18 - 10:10 AM So far Trump seized personal control of Tariffs through an obscure national security provision and deployed the Military IN the USA with the declared National EMERGENCY. btw Trump now has the power to have Congress meet only one every six months. That leaves the Courts as his only check. What are they going to do, fight the military? These are the kind of scenarios which make robomatic's claim 'that it can't happen here' because we have institutions moot. This is what I meant when I said "it is worse than you think". |

Subject: RE: BS: The FAKE state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 06 Jan 19 - 09:30 AM Although Trump declared a National emergency by tweet he never followed up with the required paperwork ! There is no National emergency to order Troops to the border, but it happened anyway. He has again threatened to declare a national emergency to fund his wall in order to do an end run around Congressional control of all funding. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Mossback Date: 07 Jan 19 - 11:06 AM Constitutional law expert and Harvard professor Lawrence Lessig dismissed President Donald Trump’s characterization of the immigrant situation at the Mexican border as a crisis on Sunday, then said the real national emergency was “this president.” |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 07 Jan 19 - 11:07 AM One thing I know for sure is that we now really have the kind of corrupt government that we used to say we had, but didn't yet. |

Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Ebbie Date: 10 Jan 19 - 03:59 AM I'm glad that you somewhat retracted your statement, Donuel, because we are NOT in a declared state of emergency. If that day comes - and it well might- in all likelihood it will trigger immediate court action. I was pondering what Donald Trump will be called in the history books. Given his instinctual response, it may be 'Mafia Don'. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:23 AM The "ongoing state of emergency in US," is that we have a psychotic President. Having an opposition majority in the House of Representatives is a big help, but will it be enough to allow us to avoid disaster? And will the 2020 election resolve and heal our emergency? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Mr Red Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:56 AM In the run up to the presidential elections my comment, in this parish, was "Be afraid America, be very afraid" - because of experience with Brexshit. In the context of 2020 that still applies. The world (as we know it) has morphed into a divisive culture. Maybe it always was in areas we didn't reside, we wouldn't know. And the one thing about change is that when predicting the future - it is based on past experience, which barely applies to change. The only saving grace is: Fakebook's disgrace - we know some of the triggers now. But.............. |

Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Felipa Date: 10 Jan 19 - 07:45 PM I'm not going to look up that Atlantic article again, Ebbie, but I think what Donuel referred to is a long past state of emergency that was never rescinded. |

Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Ebbie Date: 11 Jan 19 - 03:26 AM USA Today, September 14, 2017:"President Trump has become the third president to renew a post-9/11 emergency proclamation, stretching what was supposed to be a temporary state of national emergency after the 2001 terror attacks into its 17th year." My point is/was that conflating today's mess to the previous is a little misleading. Our national nightmare is bad enough without borrowing extraneous stuff. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 11 Jan 19 - 08:56 AM With 28 concurrent National emergencies (going on at the same time) who is conflating? Granted it is confusing but the Trump border emergency that is threatened is a way to steal Defense Dept. funds for Trump's political use and serve up $ to private contractors of his choice. https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/12/politics/national-emergencies-trump-opioid/index.html |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: EBarnacle Date: 11 Jan 19 - 03:14 PM If Agent Orange declares a state of emergency at the border we can only hope it stays at a level equivalent to the post Maria activity. Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: gillymor Date: 16 Feb 19 - 06:35 AM Actually Coulter's tweet read something like "the real emergency is that the President is an idiot" which makes it more relevant to this thread. Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: gillymor Date: 18 Jan 21 - 10:25 AM If we're going back beyond the beginning of the single term of the most corrupt and incompetent president in our history I would cite "Birtherism" as his first big lie. It served as a springboard for his political career. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jan 21 - 10:04 PM I never understood how Birtherism was supposed to work, anyway. There's nothing in the Constitution about people having been born in the United States. It doesn't say "native-born", it says "natural born", which just means you inherit your citizenship at birth from a parent rather than from being naturalised later. The actual birth could be on Mars. |
Subject: RE: BS: The ongoing state of emergency in US From: Donuel Date: 19 Jan 21 - 07:36 AM Shhh- you might open a can of worms for the supream court to define and interpret 'natural'. Don jr might someday attack someone for being an 'in vitro baby' or a frozen embryo or even a clone. Cesarianism vs vaginal birth? Division can take many forms. Some may argue that Trump created the Birthday Party on the heels of the Tea Party :^/ Biden will avoid immigration reform in any broad sweeping way. An improvement is the most he will get. Voting rights will be healing. |
