Subject: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 19 Feb 19 - 03:11 AM Hi The canal boat we share is moving to near Northwich and we'll be there from the 23 March for 3 weeks and again in June. Mudcatters have been very helpful in the past letting me know how to find any folky events in an area and I wondered if anything - regular or special - is happening. I prefer joiny inny things but we are happy to go along and listen too. Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 20 Feb 19 - 02:51 AM Thanks. Its always a bit of a treat to find something happening near where we are moored. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 20 Feb 19 - 10:53 AM Where will you be moored? There is a folk session on Mondays in Audlem on the Shropshire Union (I think it's back in the Shroppie Fly, though it has been in other pubs) There are a lot of Folkies have or who live on boats in Audlem. There are Folk Dance clubs in Stockton Heath Mon, Adlington (Ches) Wed and Hawk Green Fri. Maybe I could give you a lift. I certainly drive across Trent & Mersey on my way to all of those. PM me. Also Mon in Middlewich Although Freddy says my website is 2018 it hasn't been updated for longer (refers to 2009 as a future booking), and some of the bands no longer exist, my blog has a few links There is a Tuesday session, mostly in the Holly Bush on the A49 less than a mile from Acton Bridge (Trent & Mersey) First Mon of the month a Euro Session in Chester, play or dance (dances taught) Or if you want a pleasant stroll or a longer hike Walks from the Door gives instructions for pub walks, in various counties, plenty in Cheshire |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 20 Feb 19 - 11:00 AM March 23th - well you could come to Tatton Singers concert. OK, not folk but the Haydn Shubert and Vaughan Williams are a real joy to sing, our director insists on a high standard, and there will be professional soloists and orchestra, so should be good to listen to. And we have another concert in June as part of the Knutsford music festival |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 21 Feb 19 - 08:52 AM Thanks for all that. I'm seeing a hospital consultant this Tuesday ( lucky me ) and I'll find out if I have to return to Kent for treatment during the 3 weeks. We can then plan a route - short days in March so we won't go far. The boat is in the Aqueduct marina. Where is your concert - it sounds grand - and can we buy tickets on the door - in case we have hold ups on the way. We have another 3 weeks in June. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 21 Feb 19 - 04:02 PM Good luck with the hospital visit. The concert is in Knutsford (not far from M6 exit 19). Plenty of room in the church, always tickets on the door. There is a map on our website |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 21 Feb 19 - 04:27 PM If you are going down the Shroppie I think there is also a session in Market Drayton Thurs? |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,Ian Hendrei Date: 21 Feb 19 - 05:19 PM Middlewich FAB 2019 isn't very far from Aqueduct Marina. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 22 Feb 19 - 03:58 AM Ian - have you been to Middlewich Fab - there were not so many details on the web site. Is it a bring an instrument and join in sort of festival - or a sit and listen to sort of do? Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,Ian Hendrie Date: 22 Feb 19 - 05:47 AM Went a few times a few years ago. There did seem to be sessions (and concerts) in various pubs as well as the events in main arena. Plenty going on. I lost interest when they tried to get boats to book spaces in advance (they may have dropped this now). I also get the impression that the change to FAB rather than Folk and Boat has resulted in less folk and more 'pop' music. Don't know for sure. Details, as you say, are hard to come by. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 22 Feb 19 - 10:26 AM Thanks Ian. There might be more details nearer the time. We don't know the area as the boat has only just moved there. We have a 1/12 share in it so we can't always be there when things are on. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Ian Hendrie Date: 24 Feb 19 - 09:59 AM Hi Flora For info : there are two folk clubs, of which I have knowledge, within a reasonable cruising distance of Aqueduct Marina, which are accessible by boat. There is Lymm Folk Club just a couple of hundred yards from the main moorings in Lymm (Bridgewater Canal) and Bollington Folk Club a similar distance from the aqueduct in Bollington (Macclesfield Canal). I run the Pyramid Folk Hub website which is a local folk guide and also the Songs of the Inland Waterways website which aims to collect songs about the UK canal system in one place. You may find these of interest. Enjoy your boating in the NW. Cheers Ian |

Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 01 Mar 19 - 09:07 AM John, you seem to know something about this years folk trains that hasn't been revealed to Googlers. What usually happens is an evening train has a group of musicians playing on the outward and return journeys, then people go to the pub for a meal and a session between. Or 'normal' passengers can enjoy the music on their one way trip. Is it Plumley or some pub in Knutsford. The pub session I went to was quite crowded. Didn't go on the train as I live nearer the pub than Chester Station, so I don't know if everyone on the train has a good view (what's the audio version of 'view'?) of the music. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mr Happy Date: 01 Mar 19 - 09:36 AM Here's a snippet of some local Chester folkies on the train some years back:Chester Folk Train |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,Mad Jock Date: 02 Mar 19 - 06:44 AM Angie Wright once a regular at many sessions around the area has just launched her last 2 CDs on Spotify and I Tunes. One of the tracks on CAPTIVE HEART is called The Cheshire Set and is well worth a listen. Angie sings it with Anne Taggart the other half of Taggart and Wright. Enjoy. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 05 Mar 19 - 03:05 AM Anybody know anything more about the Shroppie Fly session - It looks like a possible one without going down the locks. Thanks everyone for your help so far. Still can't plan a route as I have a change of meds and at some point will have to return to Kent to collect them. Moving the boat further North sounded a good idea last year - best laid plans and all. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: FreddyHeadey Date: 05 Mar 19 - 03:50 AM Sorry, never been, so I don't know any more than the description on the 'thefolkdiary' link above "All styles welcome. Jump in when you can!" Will you have car transport available while you're there? The Middlewich Sunday session sounds a bit more 'organised'. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 06 Mar 19 - 03:01 AM We have cars while we are in the marina. We are likely to be in the marina more than on most holidays as I have to do a quick trip back to Kent in the second week for a hospital check up and our friends have to be back in Cambridge for an evening on the third week - but the boat is a bit like a luxury caravan - central heating and 2 loos - just a bit narrow -so we don't mind using it as a base for touring, especially as we don't know the area. There looks like lots to do and see. FloraG |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 06 Mar 19 - 08:27 AM The Shroppie session is back in the Shroppie Fly pub (I had an email confirming that this week). Monday evening, it is a very varied session, singing and tunes, being on the canal it depends who drops in (no, don't - go safely along the towpath to your boat). Some of the singers tell the instrumentalists the key to join in. Some nights it's quiet and thoughtful - new tunes aired. Other nights it's play to the gallery. Depends who is in the pub. Very friendly and welcoming, probably hurdy gurdies, maybe small bagpipes (or even one-string fiddles) among the guitars. The pubs facebook page says there is food - it has changed hands several times so you might want to confirm that they serve on Mondays. There are other pubs a step away. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 07 Mar 19 - 02:37 AM Thanks Mo - sounds just like our cup of tea - new medicine permitting. FloraG |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: FreddyHeadey Date: 07 Mar 19 - 09:40 AM You might find the 'Folk Club Map' has the venues mentioned and it'll give you an idea of just where things are in relation to Northwich. You might need to copy&paste the link into a browser, don't open it in 'maps', it doesn't work too well. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1plE0C69JOiO8FotbmDlDvE2qxbM&ll=53.234%2C-2.54e&z=10 ~~~~~~~ Shanties in Liverpool could be good, if they've got a venue ... it's been cancelled a couple of times this year : Saturday 6 April run by Trim Rig & a Doxy(Derek & Julia Batters) http://www.liverpoolseashanty.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: FreddyHeadey Date: 15 Mar 19 - 09:34 PM The Cheshire Trains newsletter, March, has just come through from Michael Ross. This is most of it Cheshire Music Trains There is no charge for the Music Train, though there is a collection on the way back for the band and you will need a train ticket. At Chester you need to buy your ticket from the station ticket office or the ticket machine. At stations with ticket machines you should use those - if they sell the ticket you need (they don't issue DUOs). Otherwise buy your ticket from the conductor on the train. No need to book – just get into the rear carriage. (Music Train leaves Chester at 19:01 and return leaves Plumley for Chester at 22:29). 2019 programme 2019 Music trains from Chester Wednesday 24 April to promote Chester Folk Festival. – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with Time Bandits, Steerage Class and Full House Wednesday 29 May – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with the Deportees Friday 21 June – to the Angel in Knutsford with Nelson Peach Wednesday 10 July – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with Pastry Shoes Wednesday 7 August – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with Terry Burgin Blues Band Wednesday 4 September – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with Port Sunlight Sea Dogs Wednesday 2 October – to the Golden Pheasant at Plumley with the Time Bandits 2019 Music Trains from Altrincham to Chester Wednesday 22 May – to Alexanders with blues from Herding Catz on the train – and Dave Roberts Jazz Quartet at Alexanders Wednesday 3 July – to Alexanders with jazz from Loose Change Buskers on the train – and Terry Burgin Blues Band at Alexanders Wednesday 11 September – to Alexanders with jazz from Marts ManJazz3 on the train – and the Deportees at Alexanders (You need to book the combination package of taxis to and from the station plus sausage'n mash at Alexanders through the Alexanders website https://alexanderslive.seetickets.com) Train times The next newsletter, in April, will contain details. Groups on Music Trains Groups are very welcome to join the Music Trains. If you plan to bring a group of 10 or more people on a Music Train from Chester to Plumley, please contact me in advance about your plans so that we can agree a date or dates. That way we can avoid having too many groups on one evening as well as the many people who come as individuals or in smaller groups – who can just turn up at a station on the night. If you plan to bring a group on the Music Trains from Altrincham to Alexanders in Chester then just go ahead and book online with Alexanders. There is a maximum of 45 places available. We are happy to arrange extra Music Trains for groups of 30 or more people on weekdays - five are arranged already. They can be in the daytime or in the evening. In the daytime we mostly go to the Railway Inn at Mobberley. The costs are the train ticket and a contribution to the band's fee – there is no extra charge for arranging the Music Train. Contact me to discuss arrangements and possible dates. It might also be possible to arrange a group Music Train by combining two groups, if between them they can bring 30 or more people. Subject: Mid Cheshire Music Trains From: GUEST,Michael Ross Date: 03 Apr 19 - 10:32 AM The Music Train link now leads to the 2019 programme. Lostock Gralam railway station is quite close to the canal so you could join the Music Trains to Plumley, Knutsford or Chester. Good music on the train and at the destination venue. Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 15 Apr 19 - 07:53 AM This facebook group may be able to answer questions for June. There is a list of sessions organised by the Canal Boat Crew - a holiday boat cruise, might even get to Barbridge myself. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 15 Apr 19 - 08:00 AM I've been to Middlewich FF, in the past. OK if you want to go to 'big name' concerts, or watch Morris dancers. There may be sessions but not always easy to find out about, and you can hang around in a pub with one guitar strumming singer song writer, when you really want to play tunes (or vv presumably). Some of the concert acts are now on the website. Some of the pubs book local artists who you've never heard of, or advertise something when the regulars would rather watch TV, or keep asking for Irish Rover. Have you got a date for June yet? |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 18 Apr 19 - 02:29 AM We are there the first 3 weeks in June - and as far as I've been able to organise I don't need to go back for any hospital appointments. FloaG |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Apr 19 - 04:01 AM Maybe we can meet in one of the sessions the Canal Boat Crew are organising, they are in the area June 1-14 (link above) |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 18 Apr 19 - 02:53 PM Mo - we came across the canal boat before - and managed a few sessions with them - when the home boat base was further south. However, they did seem to travel larger distances than we thought we could manage each day - so I think we did the first and the last - but we had a nice couple of sessions. Its always good to play with new people. Thanks for the tip. We had been hoping to get to your choir do - but my new meds leave me a bit like the Duracell Bunny - fine until the batteries run out, which they do a bit more than I would like. I found today my blood pressure was 100/55. Oops. The gent with the hurdy gurdy was there at the Shroppie but it was another gent whose fiddle I was lent. He also had a psalterie and accordion - but it was a really nice fiddle. Meeting up would be lovely - our friends have a complicated social life as they run the Cambridge club, so I'll know nearer the time when and where well be. FloraG. |

Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Apr 19 - 05:15 PM Ah, That would be Bernard . He runs a monthly session in Nantwich. I'm not surprised you didn't get to the concert if you were travelling. It was marvellous to sing, and our MD said it was our best for a while. Tatton Singers have another on June 22nd, this time we are singing Hiawatha's Wedding, Trois Chanson (Debussy), Torrent's in Summer (Elgar) and a couple of folk song setting (which are a bit too fancied-up for my taste). And the audience get a buffet after the concert. |

Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 31 May 19 - 04:45 AM Thanks for remembering us. I had a bad week last week - side effects of the medicines I'm on - so we looked for a route that did not involve too many locks. We thought - arrive this Saturday - shop Sunday ( 2+ weeks of gin and tonic for the other 3) and aim for Manchester. Not sure of the mooring at Manchester but it might be near the football ground. If we make it by Thursday we might make the Dezzy Donnoly concert - I've never seen him live so that would be a real treat. Do you know the number of a taxi firm in Manchester? we then thought a few days sightseeing -48 hour hop on hop off bus - round Manchester. Not sure what we are doing on the second week but hope to make the Shroppie Fly on the Monday of week 3. Its a shame about the boat crew- we enjoyed their sessions before - but they dont seem to fit into what we can do. Before - they did long distances each day. We like to have leisurely breakfasts and potter a bit more. If I give you my husbands mobile it would be nice if you could join us for a gin and tonic ( or cup of tea) - but we don't always get 5G ( Or 1G). 07729 036 287. The boat is blue - called Pendeford. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Stanron Date: 31 May 19 - 05:52 AM Which football ground? If you mean Etihad, the City ground, try (0161) 223 1066. Guess what they are called, Hastings Taxis. They are a mile or so from the stadium. If you mean United's ground at Old Trafford I've no idea. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 31 May 19 - 09:08 AM Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: GUEST,henryp Date: 01 Jun 19 - 06:57 PM Manchester has very good public transport; trams and buses serve both football grounds. Manchester City play at the Etihad Stadium beside the Ashton Canal. It has its own Metro tram stop - Etihad Campus - on the Ashton-under-Lyne line. Manchester United play at Old Trafford beside the Bridgewater Canal. (The nearby Lancashire Cricket Ground is also called Old Trafford.) It lies between two Metro lines. To the south, the nearest Metro stop on the Altrincham line is Old Trafford - which is actually beside the cricket ground (approx 1km walk). To the north is the Metro terminus at Media City, also serving the Lowry Centre (approx 1.5km walk). |
Subject: RE: Northwich Chesire/Staffs From: Mo the caller Date: 15 Jun 19 - 06:09 AM Nice to meet you at the canal boat crew session. You've sent me on a search for town bears (see other thread, which I can't link to as it's not posted yet). The weather looks almost good today, hope you find lots of good folk and boats at Middlewich. |
