Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Last Farewell (from New Christy Minstrels From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Oct 19 - 10:40 PM Here's the recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnhN7iv4XY0 I hear just one word different from Barry Taylor's transcription. LAST FAREWELL (Randy Sparks) I'm going away at eventide, Across the wild and the rolling sea; I bid you stay, stay here by my side, And share a last farewell with thee. Through snowclad mountains, proud and tall, Or a thousand miles 'cross the burning sand; Our last farewell, then will I recall When I'm alone in a far-off land. A wand'rin' song is all I know, Yet I love you more, more than words can tell; I hear the call and I'm bound to go, I leave you now with a last farewell. Melody: Waly, Waly From the 1963 New Christy Minstrels Ramblin' album |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Last Farewell (from New Christy Minstrels From: GUEST Date: 15 Oct 19 - 10:06 PM Sounds like “song” to me. The fits with the third line of the verse “I hear the call” —it has to be the call of the wandrring song. Barry does really nice harmonica work, the ensemble sings the first two verses, and the great Nick Woods sings the last verse; a great talent, he left us too soon. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Last Farewell (from New Christy Minstrels From: GUEST,Mick Date: 29 Feb 12 - 02:02 PM Randy used to come to our house when I was a little kid. He and Dean Jones were sailors then. My Dad was a teacher who moonlighted (moonlit?( at the Columbia Locker Club in San Diego. He'd invite them home to a home-cooked meal on the weekend and they'd sing for us. I can't be positive but I'm pretty sure that the first line in the last verse of this song is "A wand'rin SOUL is all I know". I guess it makes sense either way but that's how I remember them singing it. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LAST FAREWELL (Randy Sparks) From: Barry T Date: 30 Dec 99 - 01:23 PM That's a beauty by Randy Sparks of the New Christy Minstrels. His lyrics are set to the traditional tune for The Water is Wide or O Waly Waly.
LAST FAREWELL

Through snowclad mountains proud and tall
A wand'rin' song is all I know

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Last Farewell... I'm going away. From: Gary T Date: 30 Dec 99 - 01:22 PM The song I know as "The Last Farewell", with a hit recording by Roger Whittaker, starts out "There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor", and the refrain starts with "For you are beautiful...". I'm afraid it's a different song from the one you have in mind. |
