Subject: Lyrics and recording of 'Aberdeen' From: GUEST,Al B. Date: 08 Jun 19 - 09:19 AM Hi, this is a query regarding this merry little song Andy Stewart sings at the beginning of this medley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFoFkQi_rwc I can't seem to find any evidence of lyrics of other recordings. Anybody have any info? |

Subject: RE: Lyrics and recording of 'Aberdeen' From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 09 Jun 19 - 05:46 PM The link above doesn't work, but if I have the same song, Andy Stewart appears to have written the lyrics, and Jimmy Blue (accordion player) no doubt wrote the music. No other modern recordings listed according to the PRS/MCPS database. My own favourite Aberdeen song (apart from the Northern Lights..), would be 'Bonnie Aberdeen'. which has the adapted tune of 'click go the shears..', not high brow or wordy, but catchy and written by, if I remember rightly, Joe Gordon. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics and recording of 'Aberdeen' From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 09 Jun 19 - 06:28 PM I just did a cut and paste from your link to get to the song., yep this is the Andy Stewart and Jimmy Blue song from 1981 odd.. nobody else is listed as having covered it... though there are many songs called 'Aberdeen'. I still think though Joe Gordon's Bonnie Aberdeen works far better.. as Andy Stewart songs go, this one is a pot boiler but one man's meat is another's.... |
Subject: RE: Lyrics and recording of 'Aberdeen' (Andy Stewart) From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jun 19 - 02:33 AM Anybody want to attempt a transcription? I fixed the links, but I can't really understand Andy Stewart's lyrics. I'm thinking of spending a few days in Aberdeen when I'm in Scotland in September. Will I enjoy it? It looked intriguing from the ferry to Orkney, but we didn't have time to get off and explore. |
