Subject: RE: Post tragedy songs From: mg Date: 09 Aug 19 - 05:43 PM There are some great post flood songs...some great Ocean Ranger songs. Lots of songs about various shipwrecks. What I have said we need is a very inspiration, very singable song like an anthem in four or five languages..english, spanish, creole, and chinook trading language...plus for some reason my brain says dutch, one of first languages of european usa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOlPCmFG2pc australian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOlPCmFG2pc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr0414FrN7g south african https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr0414FrN7g I would also like to add o canada but just can't find a version with enough of the french lyrics... |
Subject: RE: Post tragedy songs From: mg Date: 10 Aug 19 - 02:50 AM here is something obviously based on the australian song..i don't like when people do this and i don't know if they would hate me doing this...should put a new tune and chorus to it. couldn't help it...just jumped on to it. in english.. We fled the persecution churches had us in their grip We gathered our provisions and staggered on the ship We prospered on the Hudson were the sturdiest of men And would sometimes get a longing to see Leiden once again I am a migrant worker i’m the owner of the bank I’m a doctor a policeman and my parents are to thank They came in stealth and darkness and crossed the rio grande And raised their many children to love and serve this land I am an old welsh miner digging deep into the ground When the cages bring us to the top nobody wants us round We are homely we are dirty but our hearts can still be stirred Some day we’ll be in office and our voices will be heard I was born on this plantation and my family all was lost And for many generations we have paid a deadly cost They say that we’re genteel but I say we’re just damn poor Some day we’ll find the silver and I know that for sure We’re the ones who walked with joseph on that long and dusty road We’re the keepers of the salmon We’re the breakers of the code We’re cherokee and metis we’re comanche we’re chinook They took our lands and rivers but that’s not all they took My people were evicted and some were bought and sold My brain has brought me silver And my beauty is my gold I ’m arcadian and cajun i am creole and quadroon One day we’ll all be equal and that day can’t come too soon |

Subject: RE: Post tragedy songs From: Mrrzy Date: 11 Aug 19 - 10:26 AM Nice. It is August 11th, here in Charlottesville. Second anniversary. Imma head downtown around lunchtime, maybe head over to the University. I would sing Willie MacBride/Green Fields of France (it all happened again / And again and again and again and again) but I can't even type it... |
Subject: RE: Post tragedy songs From: Jack Campin Date: 11 Aug 19 - 11:04 AM Maybe somebody can remember the story of "The Springhill Mine Disaster" - as I understand it, the initial reaction of the locals was hostile, and it took some effort on Pete Seeger's part to persuade them that he wasn't exploiting them for sensation value. The initiative has to come from the people affected. Any one-size-fits-all prepackaged song-for-any-tragedy is going to be crass. |
