Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Son John (Shanty) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 17 Feb 20 - 07:45 PM The only song I know of that name is Tom Paxton's: very sad song from the Vietnam War era: describes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder very accurately, but before the term was ever invented. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Son John (Shanty) From: Jim Carroll Date: 18 Feb 20 - 02:41 AM "Thanks, Jim." You're welcome My late friend used to tell the story of Henry Blake, the blind old Irish speaking storyteller, who lived at the very southern point of this County, Clare, where the River Shannon enters the sea. Blake describe how he used to sit at the bottom of his garden listening to the sailors singing their shanties as they set off on their voyages - every language under the sun - a wonderfully evocative picture drawn by a blind ban. I know that there were Irsi shanty-singers - Hugill mentioned them in his books as 'Liverpool-Irish', but nobody has ever been able to identify shanties that originated in Ireland Jim Carroll |
