There was a TV documentary recently on Smithsonion or PBS America channel about the American Nazi party and their holiday (sic) camps.

It was a significant movement in that it formulated opinionsbin the 1930/40s, even though it was considered troublesome by the government. The leader was jailed for embezzlement of the part funds, before 1942, which effectively deflated the party. They had German spies among their ranks. They used swastikas alongside the Stars and Stripes.

Gee Charmion... nations don't 'behave' as units. Some sad components OF nations shout louder and cause other components to be painted with a broad brush.    In another forum..(in USNET).. that I follow, several Brits regularly characterize anything American, from politics to spelling to music, as decedent or foolish... or worse.
As to "closest"... that word is ambiguous unless explained in context. I also note that those in the UK still refer to 'miles' and 'inches' in many contexts. I admit that a sane decimal system would be a reasonable thing to introduce, but 1)It would be durned expensive to change over... and 2)We have this awkward thing called "states rights" which allows Alabama & Texas...etc. to do almost everything differently from Oregon or Arizona...etc.

   I know the history and reasoning behind "states rights", but that very history and the rules governing it make it extremely hard to change the system! Alabama & Texas...etc. can disrupt attempts to be sensible. Thus we have guns and abortion restrictions and fuel by the gallon and the electoral college... and when I stand on my soapbox in the park and shout the ** truth**, I get mostly ignored... *wry grin*
   There are philosophical and logical terms for that quandary, but "shrug"

USA-ian is a word that is clumsy to say and spell.
I don't see anything wrong with people from the United States of America being called Americans, people from the Dominion of Canada being called Canadians and people from the United States of Mexico, being called Mexicans, etc.. North America is the name of the continent we inhabit and the term North American can be applied to it's inhabitants when needed.

As a Canadian, I find the U.S.ian assumption of the descriptor American to be consistent with that nation's behaviour (note spelling) in just about every other field of human endeavour (note spelling).

I reckon that I have now spent about 35 years telling various software applications that Canada is not an exception; we're not kidding when we measure distance in kilometres and gasoline in litres, and think it strange that our nearest neighbours don't consider us their "closest" allies.
