Subject: Coronavirus Cancellations
From: Vic Smith
Date: 10 Mar 20 - 09:55 AM

From Peter Shepheard
Fife Traditional Singing Festival
Cancelled: 15, 16, 17 May 2020

I am sure you will have been considering the problems arising from the continuing spread of the coronavirus disease. This is clearly of concern for us as organisers of FifeSing2020. We have discussed the situation and feel there is no alternative but to cancel especially as many of the participants are in the vulnerable older age group. This will be a great disappointment to all but we feel the decision needs to be made now to ensure that accommodation cancellation costs can be minimised and travel bookings are not made.

Best wishes with the hope that we shall all avoid the dreaded virus and have an otherwise enjoyable year.

The East of Scotland Tradition Song Group

from Gavin Atkin
Workshop - spring barndance cancelled

We're sure no-one will be surprised to hear that we have been giving the coming coronavirus/Covid-19 epidemic a great deal of thought.

We're very sorry and disappointed to announce this, but we have decided to cancel the spring barndance, having considered the unusual situation, our responsibilities as organisers, the likely low attendance and growing anxiety among the public. Other dance organisers report very much reduced ticket sales.

The sessions at the Castle and the Gun and Spitroast will continue as advertised until further notice, as they are smaller events. Our visiting friend on the 29th March is Mike Hebbert, and on the 26th April we're looking forward to a visit from Will Duke.

There is no official advice yet to cancel events, but public health officials report that the virus has entered the community at large and an epidemic will follow. Their efforts now are said to be focused on slowing the spread of infection so that hospitals have a better chance of coping with those who become seriously ill.

As we are all aware, barndances are particularly energetic public events that involve deep and rapid breathing, often in fairly close proximity, and of course hand-holding.

The next workshop barn dance will be the autumn barndance on the 28th November, by which time we hope the coming epidemic will have passed.

We look forward to seeing some of you at the next workshop on the 17th March. Gavin promises to find some great tunes for the occasion: as usual, two of them will be on the tunes workshop web page some time during the next few days. https://www.singdanceandplay.net/free-english-traditional-tunes-workshops/

Two events in Edinburgh also gone:
The Banjo Mandolin and Guitar Fellowship weekend at the end of March, and
Edinburgh International Harp Festival which was to have been on for 5 days in early April.
Both were to have been on held in the same boarding school premises over the Easter holidays, so it is understandable that the school would wish to avoid any risk to their staff and pupils, especially as thise attending come from world-wide locations.

we've just lost the ireby festival - a lovely wee (650 people) local event. it's a bit annoying when hundreds of thousands will be going to cheltenham this week. i was in scotland at the weekend to see partick thistle play at dundee united. there were queues to wish your hands at half-time (this a real first) anyway the following day i was waiting for a delayed train home at glasgow central. as there had been other delays and cancelations there were several hundred people queuing on the station converse with travellers coming anf going from all over. we may all have had clean hands but how much good would that be in those circumstances?

My holiday to Puglia in April :-(

Seriously, it's really sad to see these events cancelled and I genuinely fear for other events and the musicians and tech crew who will find it difficult if not impossible to find other work

SXSW (South by Southwest) was announced cancelled last week, but some of the venues are trying to still hold smaller concerts (it will take research on individual events or performers to find them). Austin-American Statesman article.

The New York Times is running a list of events that are being cancelled.

Before this thread gets too long could we split it to separate country specific threads?

I see your point, but there are lots of advantages to allowing people to see the entire scope of the problem, so I think that it's best to keep this thread as it is. Mudcatters are free to start country-specific, systematic directory threads to announce closed events. We'll make sure anything announced here is also included in such threads.

from Inishowen Traditional Singers' Circle

INISHOWEN SINGING WEEKEND 2020 CANCELLED.
In light of the ongoing uncertainties around the spread of the Coronavirus, we feel the only way we can help protect visitors and the local community is by cancelling this year's gathering. We are genuinely saddened at having to do this but health is the most important issue in all of this. We hope that you all remain safe and well until we meet again in Inishowen...
Could we please ask you to share this post as widely as possible and contact anyone who you think may have intended travelling to the festival. Your heip would be very much appreciated.

We have a singaround Friday evening, and we usually draw about 20 people and sing in a small living room. Several cases of coronavirus have been found in our community.
Should we cancel? Until when?

-Joe-

P.S. Saturday's contra dance was cancelled in this area.

Joe, yes you should cancel. This is how it spreads, and if it is in your community, it is likely that at least a couple of your 20 will be infected but showing no symptoms. Cancel until the virus is gone.

I hope the United States in general, and Washington State is particular will start taking this seriously. It spreads through contact and by breathing the same air, yet we're still having concerts, malls are open, schools are open, restaurants are open. There is no wide-spread testing and no cure, or even resistance to it. Someplace around 3 per cent of those who catch will die, and there is a good chance that almost all of us are going to catch it, and that means several million deaths. I hope I'm over-reacting, but if I'm not, won't all those people look silly, at least the ones who are still alive?

Remember that the CDC is being controlled by Trump the liar, who put Pence in charge. Pence doesn't believe in science, and insists that all announcements from the CDC go though him. In other words, we have no reason to believe anything they say. They both have track records of saying things in public that are the opposite of science and truth.

Joe, pull up your socks and make the decision yourself. You would feel horrible if anyone in the group got sick, or heaven forbid, died after the event. Cancel it and tell them you'll enjoy seeing them in mid-April.

The City of Dallas has cancelled the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. I imagine many of the local venues that celebrate will be making announcements.

The North Texas Scottish Festival at UT Arlington isn't until May 1, so by then they may be clear of this. Keep checking your venue sites for updates.

Our host for Friday recommended that we cancel, so I think that prevails. She's going to try to set up a conference call for singing.

I fully see the point of keeping this thread global: a friend in New Zealand had been planning to come to one of the now-cancelled events in Edinburgh. She is totally gutted and bereft as you can imagine. Haven't heard yet whether she can cancel her flights or will still come for a coronavirus holiday.
In the meantime, a private reunion of former colleagues is likely to be cancelled: one couple would have been coming from Australia. Oh, and btw, we're all retired medics in our 70s, so if we think it's a bad idea to take the risk, perhaps others should also be taking avoidance seriously.

OPINION
YOUNG AND UNAFRAID OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC? GOOD FOR YOU. NOW STOP KILLING PEOPLE | OPINION
A DOCTOR IN WESTERN EUROPE
ON 3/11/20 AT 2:29 PM EDT

I'm a doctor in a major hospital in Western Europe. Watching you Americans (and you, Brits) in these still-early days of the coronavirus pandemic is like watching a familiar horror movie, where the protagonists, yet again, split into pairs or decide to take a tour of a dark basement.

The real-life versions of this behavior are pretending this is just a flu; keeping schools open; following through with your holiday travel plans, and going into the office daily. This is what we did in Italy. We were so complacent that even when people with coronavirus symptoms started turning up, we wrote each off as a nasty case of the flu. We kept the economy going, pointed fingers at China and urged tourists to keep traveling. And the majority of us told ourselves and each other: this isn't so bad. We're young, we're fit, we'll be fine even if we catch it.

Fast-forward two months, and we are drowning. Statistically speaking—judging by the curve in China—we are not even at the peak yet, but our fatality rate is at over 6 percent, double the known global average.

Put aside statistics. Here is how it looks in practice. Most of my childhood friends are now doctors working in north Italy. In Milan, in Bergamo, in Padua, they are having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a 40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old with high blood pressure, because they don't have enough beds. In the hallway, meanwhile, there are another 15 people waiting who are already hardly breathing and need oxygen.

The army is trying to bring some of them to other regions with helicopters but it's not enough: the flow is just too much, too many people are getting sick at the same time.

We are still awaiting the peak of the epidemic in Europe: probably early April for Italy, mid-April for Germany and Switzerland, somewhere around that time for the UK. In the U.S., the infection has only just begun.

But until we're past the peak, the only solution is to impose social restrictions.

And if your government is hesitating, these restrictions are up to you. Stay put. Do not travel. Cancel that family reunion, the promotion party and the big night out. This really sucks, but these are special times. Don't take risks. Do not go to places where you are more than 20 people in the same room. It's not safe and it's not worth it.

But why the urgency, if most people survive?

Here's why: Fatality is the wrong yardstick. Catching the virus can mess up your life in many, many more ways than just straight-up killing you. "We are all young"—okay. "Even if we get the bug, we will survive"—fantastic. How about needing four months of physical therapy before you even feel human again. Or getting scar tissue in your lungs and having your activity level restricted for the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another bug in hospital, while you're being treated or waiting to get checked with an immune system distracted even by the false alarm of an ordinary flu. No travel for leisure or business is worth this risk.

Now, odds are, you might catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms. Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else, from your own grandparents to the random older person who got on the subway train a stop or two after you got off. You're fine, you're barely even sneezing or coughing, but you're walking around and you kill a couple of old ladies without even knowing it. Is that fair? You tell me.

My personal as well as professional view: we all have a duty to stay put, except for very special reasons, like, you go to work because you work in healthcare, or you have to save a life and bring someone to hospital, or go out to shop for food so you can survive. But when we get to this stage of a pandemic, it's really important not to spread the bug. The only thing that helps is social restriction. Ideally, the government should issue that instruction and provide a financial fallback—compensate business owners, ease the financial load on everyone as much as possible and reduce the incentive of risking your life or the lives of others just to make ends meet. But if your government or company is slow on the uptake, don't be that person. Take responsibility. For all but essential movement, restrict yourself.

This is epidemiology 101. It really sucks. It is extreme—but luckily, we don't have pandemics of this violence every year. So sit it out. Stay put. Don't travel. It is absolutely not worth it.

It's the civic and moral duty of every person, everywhere, to take part in the global effort to reduce this threat to humanity. To postpone any movement or travel that are not vitally essential, and to spread the disease as little as possible. Have your fun in June, July and August when this—hopefully—is over. Stay safe. Good luck.

No word so far about Northern Streams, Edinburgh Flute Fling, Trad Fest etc to name but a few events in Edinburgh. Also there’s other Scottish festivals at Glenfarg, Girvan, Moniaive coming soon too.

The Niel Gow Fest is next week. It should be safe enough, I’d think.

It turns out the reason Trump didn't block travel to and from the UK and the US is because he owns three golf clubs in the UK. He doesn't want to cut into his profits.

I wonder how this ban is affecting US citizens trying to return home? Taking a more circuitous route (fly to Canada then to the US?)

I think that attitudes have changed rapidly worldwide over the last week. There are so many events that I just hate to miss, that I had planned to take the risk - even though I know darn well things would be better if everybody just stayed away from all crowds.
But events are being cancelled right and left, so the temptation to attend is being removed from me.
Good thing, I think. I've got lots of books to read and movies to watch, and the woods next door are full of wildflowers.

I am afraid we will have to hunker down, and resort to cyber sessions/singing. Though I can't see jamming working, the latency of the internet is real and variable. The technology is there though and has a window of opportunity. Micro$oft has been advertising Microsoft Teams on TV for months.

Shetland Folk Festival
·

Important message from the Shetland Folk Festival Committee:

It is with regret that due to the recent COVID -19 pandemic, we have decided to reschedule this year’s Shetland Folk Festival and our 40th celebrations till next year. We have not taken this decision lightly, but after weeks of consulting venues, musicians, stakeholders and volunteers; the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community (and those who wish to come here) must be our priority.

We want our 40th Festival to be a celebration of everything good about our islands, and recent measures such as global travel restrictions, limits on public gatherings and an understandable uncertainty amongst the most vulnerable in our community has led us to conclude that it’s better to wait another year to really do Shetland and its musical family justice.

With most of this year’s visiting acts already confirmed for 2021, we promise we will be back with another stellar line-up and we’ll be even more hungry to welcome world-class musicians and audiences back again come 29th April 2021. We will be in touch with members in the coming weeks regarding refunds and the opportunity to carry forward your membership to next year.

As disappointing as it may feel for everyone connected with the festival, we are aware that this situation is going to be difficult on the live music industry with many self-employed musicians/technicians/agents impacted. We therefore encourage our festival-goers to support artists you enjoy in whatever way you can. For example, purchasing albums or merchandise from some of the bands you are hoping to see next year… Maybe looking at learning a new instrument online… Or getting a tune written for a special occasion…
In the meantime, we wish everyone good luck and good health in what is a difficult and unprecedented situation. If our community shows the same spirit and resilience in this current time as it does during our festival each year, we have no doubt we will get through this.
Let’s make up for it in 2021!

Love,
Da Committee

Yeaterday was interesting, very much in the meaning of the Chinese curse "may yoy live in thteresting times" The calendar of events changed about every half hour. First came the dance cancellations - starting with English Country Dance with an older demographic, and several of us with compromised health. Next the contra dances. Some concert venues said they would carry on, changing their minds later in the day, but all the main folk-oriented ones cancelled as of today.
The decision-making process kept getting more urgent as more information came out, and three cases verified in our immediate vicinity, so by afternoon Folknet had canceled the show dear to my heart (February Sky /Phil Cooper & Susan Urban).
By then all of Ohio's universities had shut down & planning to finish out the year with remote learning. Nearly Everything with a large group of people was shut down. Governor banned assemblies of over 100 people in any venue (not that this would apply to lots of folk events...) schools below university level are expected to take a three week vacation, after getting home study packets on Monday.

While all this is going on here, I believe Judy and Dennis Cook took off for for their usual 5 weeks in England - hope the folks there will take good care of them.

As of 3 hours ago the National Folk Festival board is still considering options, but the only one seems to be CANCEL as the Federal Govt has banned all gatherings of over 500 people (dunno why 499 is safer than 501) & even if all concerts in the largest venue (capacity 2000) were moved elsewhere they would need 4 new venues & lots more volunteers, or maybe they could count folk entering & leaving the venue ... not.

I suspect this thread will very rapidly become overwhelmed. The UK government is going to ban "mass gatherings" from next weekend - quite what constitutes a mass gathering is still to be announced, but I am assuming that the festival season will be largely wiped out.

A ceilidh I help to run has been cancelled, my band has already had a gig cancelled and I'm expecting more. As things stand we intend to honour existing commitments if we can, but we're being cautious about entering into new ones.

Many small events are not part of the "events industry" so even if government assistance were to be provided I wonder whether they would qualify? The same goes for many folk musicians who stand to lose most of their income this year.

"Interesting times" indeed. Let's hope that as many of us as possible will survive to live in them.

Edinburgh FC is following current government advice and music industry guidelines and proceeding with next Wednesday's gig. Obviously the 500+ audience comment from Ms Sturgeon does not apply to EFC.

Plus the basis of that comment was not so much about health as trying to reduce the pressure on public services like hospitals, police and so on. We don't think EFC's gigs would put any pressure on public services!

However, we do ask that if you are feeling at all sick, have a temperature or a cold and sniffles, or have recently returned from any of the counties listed in the link that you stay home.

For those in attendance, please make sure that you remain clean (UCC has plenty of handwash and hot water) and mindful of the current situation.

TICKET REFUNDS
If you are unable to attend any event at Edinburgh FC, for which you have purchased tickets in advance, for any reason related to the coronavirus outbreak, EFC will refund the full cost of your ticket.

This is exceptional - normally once a ticket has been purchased it's yours sine die and you can sell-it on if you wish.

In fact that's about the only way you can recoup the cost of your ticket if you cannot make it to the gig cos, in common with box offices in general, EFC normally won't refund your advance purchase.

We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday.

PS: I am waiting for a note from Ellen and Kevin Mitchell to say they are or are not going to be to come through from Glasgow for the gig. If they are unable to come through we'll probably just have an Open Mic night I guess. We'll let you know.

John Barrow
Chair.

Gavin & Julie Atkin who run th "Sing & Play" events in Mid-Kent

Singdanceandplay events cancelled until further notice

It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that planned Singdanceandplay events are cancelled for the coming months.

Following the barndance cancellation, we had hoped to continue with the smaller events, including those at Horsmonden and Brenchley. However, as we're probably all aware from the news, the threat of coronavirus/Covid-19 has continued to grow, as has the scale of government responses around the world.

What seems undeniable is the threat it poses to those of us who are for one reason or another especially vulnerable to developing pneumonia following infection - and that applies to folks with breathing disorders, diabetes or who have compromised immune systems, which may arise due to a range of medical and surgical causes.

Gavin has asthma and cannot risk being infected with a virus that for him has such a high risk of serious illness. This is particularly true when we know healthcare services will surely be overwhelmed and unable to provide the care we would expect in normal times.

He's far from alone in this, of course.

Please take great care of yourselves, everyone, and make sure you follow the official advice, tiresome though it is.

We promise that we'll be back with more events when this time is behind us.

Julie and Gavin

While many clubs, sessions, festivals etc have made the decision to cancel or postpone, some others seem quite determined to go ahead on the basis of existing "Government advice".

Normally, I’d admire the spirit of such organisations and, of course, their wishes not to let booked artists and ticket holders down. However, I’m not totally convinced that this is the right time and circumstances to "soldier on" and carry on regardless. While many of us may be OK, others may not. Also, we should doing whatever we can to slow down the spread of the virus.

Also, many people including some medical experts are not convinced that The UK Gov have taken sufficient action. This explains why many organisations ranging from musical, theatrical, to sporting events have taken it upon themselves to postpone and cancel events themselves and (I believe) have now forced the Govt’s hand in this respect to officially ban larger gatherings as from next week.

*By the way, I'm not responding specifically to the post before last. I have a few other organisations in mind too.*

Howard if the UK gvt follow the Scottish one (which they may well do) then the definition of a mass gathering will be 500 people outside or 100 people at an inside event. Though the events themselves seem to be cancelling when much smaller. I have tickets for Dean Owens at String Jam Club in Selkirk tonight and just heard that is now cancelled.

I know and, as I said, some others want to carry on.
Unfortunately, I feel that these unitlateral decisions are sending out mixed messages and neither artits or concert goes know wher ethey stand.

I know the whole situation is terrible for everyone but I think it would be beter if we could all sing from the same hymn sheet.

... and now it strikes here.
Next weekend we (The Sussex Pistols) were due to play for a ceilidh at the end of the Green Party conference in Brighton. Not only the ceilidh but the whole conference has be cancelled. We have played many dances for the Green Party, both local constituencies and for the national party and they are always really enjoyable events. They say that this is a postponement and not a cancellation; the conference will take place and so will the ceilidh.
I cannot kelp but think that this will be the first of many for the band with the amount of touching and close contat that social dancing involves.

Sid is currently casting around for the dep. for Peter, whom of course we all wish well. Maybe the Coal Porters who knows?

All depressing news.

I'm afraid we've reached the stage now when all such organisations should follow suit. If not, they will inevitably leave the impression that they are not being responsible.
Of course, they may well have thought things through and the local risk, especially at the moment, may be non existent or minimal. However, the perception by others may not be the same.

As regards sessions, they can maybe continue for a while. I don't see an issue of a few friends getting together for a tune if they take care but, preferably, it should be a more low key affair. Not something which is advertised far and wide or on an "official" basis.

There's talk about closing pubs and keeping restaurants open but the distinction between the two can be quite blurred these days. You can eat, drink, and socialise in both.
There are some quiet and roomy bars and very busy bustling restaurants.
Personally, I would be very choosy these days(I am mostly, anyway) and standing ten deep at the bar in a Wetherspoons or similar would be out of the question.

Looking at our general demographic of attendees I am sure you will understand that looking after our friends and regulars as being the most important thing.

We hope to get the all clear by early summer and so honour our autumn artists booked to perform but this will be as expected but … will, of course, keep you up to date with regards the club starting up again but in the mean-time stay safe, we don’t want to lose any of you!

I'm seeing messages on Twitter from friends who teach one-on-one music classes, giving instructions to their students how to do lessons remotely. I taught my sister how to use the Facebook Messenger's video call and Google's Hangout the other day. She is a retiree who has used skype at work, and I attribute her not having used the others before to her not having children. I was an early adopter in my family, and when my children travelled, such as my daughter studying abroad for six months in Japan, we used those video calls to eliminate long distance charges.

I suspect the current circumstances will push many people to learn to use those services that have been available to them but unexplored before now. The best tip to those who are curious about them is to open the application, study the features, find a YouTube tutorial, then arrange with a friend to test it between you. This would allow Mudcatters around the world to speak sans phone charges, and that would be a wonderful thing! (If you're already my friend on facebook and want to try out a Messenger chat, send me a message and we'll work out a time to try it.)

"Public Computers" pretty much defeat the purpose as far as coronaviruse closures & quarentines go, don't they, Joe? How are people supposed to access them?

Re "Obamaphones" see
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/phone-home/

And can you tell us how many of the 39 million U.S. folks at or below the poverty level, ands especially the 18 million in deep poverty (less than half the poverty threshold) have such "access" of phones?

Then, as I think I mentioned, there's more people in the world than those living in the good old U. S. of A.

Best,

Greg

You're trolling, Greg. That's enough. I've worked with homeless people regularly since 1999. Most have free or low-cost cell phone service, through programs that have been available since 1984, long before Obama. Many had smartphones before I got one myself - they need them. And yes, people call them Obamaphones. And yes, there are free computers available to homeless people in many locations, and these resources are not being shut down by the pandemic. And yes, there are similar programs in other parts of the world. End of argument. Don't distract from the topic of discussion by trying to pick a fight.

yesterday the National Folk Festival was cancelled, today I cancelled my folk club for this weekend.

I came home to about 20 emails & they all related to coviv19, even the email from my sister (I had sent her some cartoons on the topic!) many were about cancellations.

The weekly newsletter from our state Folk Federation listed more cancellations than events, & there was a notice on the top of the newsletter saying some of the listed events might still be cancelled, so check beforehand.

As we are in the middle of Festival season (Jan-April), lots of international artists have arrived for the National & other festivals. One performer is heading out after doing earlier festivals, with only his last couple of concerts cancelled, but others are just arriving.

Of interest only to the dance community in Tarrant County, TX, but the hafla (a dance concert - belly dance, gypsy, etc.) that was scheduled in a couple of weeks at a local middle eastern restaurant has been cancelled. And this is the kind of thing that is likely to drive a lot of small businesses out of business. Dance students can keep their distance as they dance, but there is equipment that must be cleaned that is difficult to clean (fans, veils, etc.) so will probably reduce dances to simple productions with no props.

When this has passed we must pick up immediately where we left off if the studio manages to open again in a few weeks. The restaurant has a great buffet that brings in a lunch crowd, except now it will only be takeout if they can keep it up.

Bad news!

Very sadly, we have had to cancel the upcoming gigs with Megson, Martin Simpson and Daphne's Flight. The Shelley Theatre has announced closure for now as a result of the Government advice due to the danger of Covid-19 spreading.

The Shelley Theatre will be in touch with all ticket-purchasers.

Hopefully we will be able to resume our series of folk concerts in a few months time. We will keep you informed by mail-out. We plan to offer gigs to these three acts for some time in 2021.

Cancellations

Over the weekend, we decided, because of the increased spread of the Coronavirus, to cancel the next three club nights. These are this coming Thursday - 19th March - and 26th March & 2nd April. We very much regret having to do this but there is clearly overwhelming evidence that even when people gather in small groups, there is a heightened risk of infection.

Given the Government's advice yesterday - that we should all 'avoid' pubs, restaurants, theatres, etc. and that those over 70 and those and/or with underlying health conditions should socially distance themselves for an extended period - it seems likely that there will need to be further cancellations. There is in fact a strong possibility that we will not be able to resume until the Autumn. We will review the situation in seven to ten day's time and keep you informed.

The promised update from Lawrence Heath

Welcome to the Facebook group for the Music Institute Folk Club. The club meets approximately fortnightly, between September and April inclusive, at the Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH (opposite the Library in North Street). We have some of the top names from the English folk scene (and sometimes further afield) twice a month. In addition we run monthly "Come All Ye Open Stage" evenings for local performers and very occasionally promote concerts at other venues in the centre of Guildford.

Our website is http://www.musici.org.uk.

The folk club is run by The West Surrey Folk Consortium which also organised the monthly barn dances at Godalming Borough Hall, known as GBH Ceilidhs, which have their own group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1257598820921404/

Cellar Upstairs club cancelled this Saturday
Dear all

This week’s guest, Jeff Wesley, is 85, so I phoned him to check whether he was still happy to come on Saturday. He’s decided that it would be wiser not to come. Under all the circumstances, I’ve decided it would be best to cancel the club this Saturday. I’m hoping that we will be able to meet on 28th March and 4th April, but it’s impossible to be sure, as the situation has been changing from day to day.
Looking ahead, the Teacups have reluctantly decided to cancel their forthcoming farewell tour, including their night at the Cellar on 16th May. Their agent says they found it a difficult decision to make but, with the travel restrictions from the US (where Alex lives), and because Alex is immuno-compromised, it was just not possible for him to travel at this time. With the new advice from the government this week, they’ve decided they have to cancel the tour.

As this has only just happened, I haven’t yet booked a replacement for that night. I am hoping that the virus will be past its peak by then, and we’ll be able to get together in small groups, if not in large ones.

All the best (and keep on washing your hands!)

Sheila

A major loss for the folklore calendar in Sussex: -

Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green

It is with great sadness that Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green has decided that in the current circumstances it would be both impossible and irresponsible to go ahead this year.

This is not a decision we have come to lightly and know that many people will, like us, be devastated. Not only is this for many of us a major high point of our year, it is also vital to kick-starting the local summer economy. We will be meeting regularly to discuss the situation as advice from the government evolves.

We would like to thank all of our supporters, volunteers and local businesses for their continued support. Please keep safe everyone, look after yourselves. ??

The Folk Voice Conference in Sheffield is postponed
I am sure that, like me, you will have had a seemingly unending stream of messages telling you about events cancelled and organisations pulling in their horns. Sadly, I must add to the pile with the not unexpected news that we are going to have to delay the Folk Voice Conference that was planned for 6th June. It is a great shame because the proposals for papers that we have received include some really original and interesting ideas, and I am longing to hear them. But we are all going to have to wait until the current difficulties have subsided. The organising team remains totally committed to the idea and it will happen.

Thank you to all those who have submitted proposals for papers. We are holding them carefully and we will be in touch. There will be a further call for papers when we have a new date so, if you had a nearly formed idea that you didn't quite get around to submitting - keep thinking!

Best wishes to all and keep healthy!

From Cheque-Mates Folk 'N' Roots Music Club, School Lane, Hopwas, Near Tamworth
Dear All,

Reluctantly and wisely, we are following advise to postpone our club and therefore we will not be celebrating the Irish tonight after all. We had a chat with the steward, Jabba, and he says it will be evident that the club itself will have to close. The Hopwas Beer Festival is also postponed.

Those of you who are performers it’s a chance to look at replenishing our repertoire, and plenty of time to rehearse in our lounges at home!! Save money on the beer and be healthy!

We will be back as soon as things improve. It all seems a bit surreal, and the first time the club has been closed other than a move and a refurbishment of the venue in 29 years!

Keep Music live in our Homes and stay Health Happy and Well!!
You can still hear Claret on the radio see below! Please take a listen thank you!

Graham of GPS Presentations, Uckfield, Sussex
Hi everyone,

Due to the latest government guidelines regarding the Coronavirus I have cancelled the Barber & Taylor gig due to be held on 19 April and also the Jim Crawford one due to be held on 24 May.

Any tickets already paid for will be fully refunded.

The position regarding the 24 June gig with Veronica Sbergia & Max De Bernardi will be reviewed in a month's time when we will all know more about the likely outcome of the Coronavirus crisis.

At present the Uckfield Blues & Roots Festival 2020 is still going ahead on 24th, 25th and 26th July with the position being monitored on a regular basis. Tickets will shortly go on sale with the proviso that should the festival be cancelled all ticket money will be refunded.

Hopefully we will be able to enjoy some live music in June or July but meanwhile do take care.

Kind regards
Graham

Sadly, we have cancelled Epworth Music Day, here in North Lincs which this year would have been 20 June. It reached the point of having to financially commit to some upfront costs or pull the plug.

If it goes away sooner than we think, then a cut down version could exist but without of the infrastructure of road closures etc. Watch this space.

Please, Nick, don't eat hedgehogs or share recipes (perhaps you were joking? But I cannot tell)

Hedgehogs are in danger of extinction in the UK. There are now fewer than a million left. I do rescue and rehabilitation on a small scale and saw fewer hogs last summer than ever before, and all brought to me for rescue perished.

If you live in the UK help the hogs by growing pollinating plants, ensuring that your fence allows hogs to reach neighboring gardens, avoiding pesticides, and leaving some areas of the garden untidy

I almost didn't look at this thread, because my immediate reaction was that EVERY meeting and event between now and the summer is cancelled. But it was a different situation in many places "way" back on the 12 of March when this discussion thread started.

St. Patrick's celebrations of various kinds throughout Ireland were cancelled about a week ahead of time. By mid March, the various groups and the club meetings that I would have participated in in N. Ireland were cancelled indefinitely. That was before the UK and Irish governments made official restrictions.

NI Family History Society has cancelled all meetings for spring and summer. HALSWAY MANOR residential folk course venue in Somerset England is closed till June 1. Subject to review the closure may be extended.

NONSUCH DULCIMER CLUB, UK, has cancelled its annual long weekend workshop which was scheduled for late October, rather than going ahead with plans and possibly finding they have to cancel in the end up. The venue is allowing the group's deposit to be held over until 2021.

Looking through this discussion thread, I've learned of many groups and festivals I didn't know about - several of great interest to me - and learned that the next North Atlantic Fiddle Convention will be in Ireland. Somethings to look forward to in 2021 or 2022?

Cropready announced that they were still hoping to go ahead four days ago. Another festival (sorry, confidential info, no names) is making contingency plans for cancellation and have a decision point for a no-go announcement later this month.

Personally I think that we will be seeing UK restrictions running into August. I just hope that we are far enough through all this to allow clubs to reopen for their 20/21 season in the autumn.

From the Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy/Willie Clancy Summer School website:

Coronavirus Notice from Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy

Like other organisations with events scheduled for June, July and August, Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy is anxiously monitoring the current health crisis. We propose to wait until around mid-May to see if the situation improves before we make any announcements. If, at that point, the authorities are satisfied summer schools and festivals can take place during these months, then we may be in a position to run the summer school. But if circumstances remain critical then the 2020 school cannot be run.

Troll this, Joe - looks like your "Obamaphones" & "public computers" are falling down on the job.

A Crisis In Education: Schools Can’t Reach Thousands Of Children

During its first week of distance learning, Clark County School District in Nevada ? which serves about 320,000 students ? made contact with about 309,000 kids via email, phone calls or “progress demonstrated through a learning management system,” a spokesperson wrote HuffPost. That still leaves around 11,000 students the district was unable to reach.

Atlanta Public Schools reported that after the first two weeks of school closures, about 84% of students in pre-K through 12th grade had logged in to any district application daily. Over 6,000 kids have failed to get online.

In Los Angeles, 40,000 high school students have not been in daily contact with their teachers, and 15,000 have failed to complete any schoolwork since schools closed on March 16, according to the Los Angeles Times.

We are sorry to have to announce the cancellation of our Sea Shanty Festival planned for 19 21 June 2020. The current situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is a worry for all, and no matter how matters progress in the next month or so we have decided it would not be appropriate to continue with our plans for this year. This is a big disappointment for us but the health and safety of our visitors, from home and overseas and for those involved with the organisation of the Festival is our number one priority.

Here's a subject that may demand it's own thread before long. Businesses closing due to the pandemic. The iconic Troubador has set up a Go-Fund-Me account to try to survive the closure.

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2020-05-05/troubadour-nightclub-west-hollywood-elton-john-coronavirus

Historic Troubadour nightclub launches GoFundMe page, calls survival ‘a big if’

For 60 years, the historic club the Troubadour has anchored the western edge of West Hollywood with live music. A perennial presence in Los Angeles live music since the beatnik era, the club opened by Doug Weston has provided thousands of artists the opportunity to make magic on hallowed ground.

But as Gov. Gavin Newsom was recently laying out the stages by which businesses may be able to re-open, Christine Karayan, the club’s general manager, realized the seeming futility of the Troubadour’s plight. Newsom has announced that music venues will be among the last to open, in Phase 4.

“That means the middle to the end of next year to potentially open, and maybe a 25% cap” on crowd size, Karayan says. “I can’t foresee being able to ride this out like that.”

A rustic general admission room with a small balcony and an upstairs VIP area, the 500-capacity club’s selling point has long been its intimacy. Save a few pesky support beams, there’s not a bad spot in the place. A folk and blues venue to start, in the mid-1960s it started adding rock, jazz and pop acts that included rising artists such as the Byrds, Lee Hazlewood, Nina Simone and Judy Collins. It served as a crucial early comedy platform for Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and the Smothers Brothers.

Though it’s a tourist destination, its location just south of the Sunset Strip has made it a kind of neighborhood spot for musically minded Hollywood Hills, Beverly Hills and Hollywood residents.

Starting in the late ‘60s, the Troubadour helped guide artists including Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Tom Waits, the Eagles and Warren Zevon into the mainstream. Most famously, it was on the Troubadour’s stage in 1970 that a 20-year-old Elton John, across a series of shows, became a household name. That moment was captured in the recent John biopic, “Rocketman.”

“My whole life came alive that night, musically, emotionally... everything,” Elton John told The Times a few decades after those auspicious performances. “It was like everything I had been waiting for suddenly happened.... I could tell it was a magical night from the moment I stepped onstage.”

In the decades since, the Troubadour has remained defiantly independent. As other clubs shuttered or made booking arrangements with moneyed promoters such as Live Nation and AEG, the Troubadour has charted its own course — and continued booking standing-room-only gigs. “My last four talent buyers, actually, have all gone to Live Nation,” Karayan says with a fatalistic chuckle. “I’m the training ground, apparently.”

Outsiders commonly think of the Troubadour as a folk and singer-songwriter venue, but across the decades it has adapted and evolved. In the ‘80s, as heavy metal ripped through Southern California, the Troubadour served as a stage for early gigs by Slayer, Metallica and Motley Crue. In the 1990s and ‘00s, the club hosted Brit pop, grunge and alt-rock: Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Melvins, Dave Matthews, the White Stripes, Bon Iver and Weezer all played beneath the club’s iconic neon sign on their ascents to main stages.

The Troubadour brand in Los Angeles is so embedded into music culture that many fans misunderstand the mechanics of the club, Karayan says. Describing it as “a little bit forgotten,” Karayan says, “We’re lumped in with the big boys, and we’re not the big boys. We don’t have shareholders. We don’t have corporate money. We are what we are.”

Karayan’s father, Ed Karayan, owns both the club and the building that it’s housed in. He’s been sole caretaker since his former business partner Weston died in 1999. The club leases neighboring offices and storage space at market value, and insurance premiums are exorbitant.

Listing the costs, Karayan pauses. “The more I think about it, it’s just completely futile. At least a big seated venue has space where they can keep people apart. But I don’t know how that works for a general admission venue. Are you going to stop them from using the restroom?”

Like most proprietors, at first Karayan figured that the pandemic would prompt some temporary belt-tightening. She remembers her mind set: “At first, it was, ‘What is happening?’ And then we started canceling shows.”

The last gig was Glass Animals on March 11. YouTube videos show the band’s singer, Dave Bayley, singing from up in the balcony before moving his way through the VIP area and back onto stage. The place was packed. The next day, doom set in, Karayan says. “When we walked into the office on March 12, I thought, ‘Something horribly wrong is coming our way.’” So she decided to cancel shows through May. “And then it just started unraveling.”

When she read a month ago that Live Nation and AEG were predicting a fall 2020 reopening, Karayan was relieved. “I was like, ‘We can do that. We probably won’t have concerts until the end of the year, but it’s OK.” But, she adds, “Now it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry. We’re talking, potentially, the middle of next year.’”

As an active member of the National Independent Venue Assn., she’s communicating with its 800 affiliates about lobbying for government aid. She says that many have expressed doubt that they’ll be able to survive an extended closure without immediate help.

Like many businesses, the Troubadour set up a GoFundMe page to help its 20 hourly employees, some of whom have worked at the club for decades, meet their needs. All but three have been laid off. To date, the campaign has raised $11,400 of its $30,000 goal. But that was a stopgap measure, and Karayan said the club will soon be raising its goal to underscore the urgency. It’s one of the only remaining options.

“It looks tacky, but it’s a reality at this point. It’s not a joke,” she says. “If we’re going to survive this thing — and that’s a big if — we’re going to need all the help we can get, from any direction we can get it.”

Whether that aid comes from one of the many multi-millionaires who owe their fortunes, in part, to momentous gigs at the Troubadour, or through the thousands of fans with once-in-a-lifetime memories, response to the Troubadour’s ask will likely determine whether that Glass Animals gig was the last show at the club.

“We know there’s going to be a huge fatality rate as far as how many venues will not be able to open again when/if this thing ever ends,” Karayan has concluded. “We’re just looking to survive, like everybody else.”

I copied the entire content because chances are a lot of people will hit a paywall with the LA Times.

From Graham Pope

Uckfield Blues & Roots Festival 2020

Hi everyone,

I hope that you are all well.

We have decided to postpone this July's festival for obvious reasons and have rescheduled it for October 23 to 25 with virtually the same line up apart from the Sunday afternoon session which will depend on what we may be able to move indoors.

There is of course a serious doubt that, even in October, it will be feasible and safe to put the festival on and in this event we hope to offer most of the same line up for the 2021 festival. The position will be reviewed in August based on the government guidance at that time.

There are a number of people who have already booked tickets for this July and these will still be valid for October. However if anyone requires a refund at this stage please let me know.

We will be in touch with all sponsors to discuss the revised schedule.

Please do let me know what you think about our revised plans as I'm sure there will be some of you who will already have decided that it won't be safe to attend anything this year.

Kind regards
Graham

More detail from Alan Castle about Tenterden

The 28th Tenterden Folk Festival
Postponed to October 2021

2nd June 2020

Tenterden Folk Festival 2020 Postponed

After lengthy discussions, and considering the latest government announcements, the Trustees and Festival Committee have reluctantly come to the decision that the 28th Tenterden Folk Festival, due to be held from 1st to 4th October 2020, should be postponed to 2021. In making this decision we have considered the age demographic of many of our festival guests, regular audience members and volunteers as well as our responsibilities as festival organisers to keep everyone safe at the Festival. Therefore the 28th Tenterden Folk Festival will take place from Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October 2021.

We have delayed taking this very hard decision until now in the hope that the future position regarding the Coronavirus pandemic and the necessary restrictions and recommendations regarding public gatherings and meetings would become clearer. It now still seems unlikely to us that festival venues such as public houses, cafes and restaurants, hotels and other accommodation will be open as normal. We have also considered the position regarding travel to the festival for those coming from longer distances and particularly two guests coming from overseas and their position regarding flights and travel health insurance.

We have heard from several Morris sides that in their view the whole season is now a write off as they have not been able to meet to practise and that some of their members would not feel safe attending any large gatherings this year. Similar considerations also apply to the free events in the marquees where it may still not be safe for all the stallholders, exhibitors, Morris sides and performers to gather.

We also had to consider the financial implications of whatever decision we made. We have already incurred substantial costs including advertising, printing, hotel bookings for some guests and other costs and need to be able to avoid running up further costs in confirming bookings and paying for logistics such as marquees, stages, portable toilets, PA, etc. and then having to cancel the festival due to restrictions being still in place in October.

We are pleased that many of the guests booked for 2020 have already indicated that they are able to join us for 2021 instead.

We may try to arrange some smaller special events between now and next year. Look out for our future emails and tweets or check on our website for announcements in due course.

We will be contacting all guests, Morris sides, ticketholders, stallholders, suppliers, venues, funders and other supporters, etc. over the next couple of weeks.

We look forward to seeing you all as soon it is safe and possible to do so.

Yours sincerely

Alan

Kirriemuir Festival - usually first weekend in September, also off for this year. A whole list of things on and off on the latest TMSA newsletter(Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland).
On the brighter side, more and more events being kept going in an online "virtual" substitute.

The Olde Rose and Crown theatre pub in Walthamstow have started a crowd funding campaign to keep the pub in business. If they can't keep going Walthamstow Folk Club will be at risk.

We are not going to be getting back to any live music soon. The latest Govt. guidelines (for the UK) say:-
* It is against the law to gather in groups of more than 30 people, except for the limited circumstances as set out in law. In these specific cases, those operating venues should take additional steps to ensure the safety of the public and prevent large gatherings or mass events from taking place.

*At this time, venues should not permit live performances, including drama, comedy and music, to take place in front of a live audience

So, a dozen people, socially distanced, playing instrumental folk music for their own amusement, outdoors, but no 'blowing' instruments such as whistles, brass, etc. Is that allowed I wonder.... in a pub garden? No dancing.

Checking out major concert venues such as Kings Place and South Bank Centre there seems to be a concensus that there will be a major reopening in September. These are places that will have the capability to maintain full traceability in the event of a new outbreak.

I don't think that we will be seeing public dances and ceilidhs this side of Christmas though.

Gigs may start in the UK after September, but guitarists will only be able to have top and bottom strings on their guitars to preserve social distancing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most amusing Bonzo. I suspect that it will only be concerts with performers safely up on a stage and pre booked seats to preserve distancing. Clubs and sessions may have to wait especially if cases start to rise in th winter.

The (Australian) National Folk Festival for Easter Weekend **2021** has been cancelled (as an in-person event; there will be online activity). Here's the full message the organizers have sent out:

To our Folk Community,

The National Folk Festival Board has today made the very challenging and important decision that the 2021 National Folk Festival will not go ahead.

In March this year the pandemic changed the festival and events landscape and the National Folk Festival was among the first major events in Australia to cancel in response. After significant research and planning towards a 2021 Festival, it has become apparent this will also be impossible.

We understand the devastating effect this will have on our participants and performers, but our community and their safety is our highest priority. Continuing restrictions around large gatherings in a multiple day Festival environment and the unpredictable nature of events mean we have reached a point at which a decision must be made.

The nature of our Festival, which brings people together from across the country, our immersive site and program all mean that we're unable to put on the kind of vibrant, participatory event that is a hallmark of the National Folk Festival.

We continue to explore alternate events and activities for 2021 that will enable our community to perform, share and develop folk traditions.

The board and staff are very grateful for the past months of collaboration, support and development with our key stakeholders; in particular the ACT government and the team at EPIC. We'll continue to work with EPIC and the ACT Government to create new events and see the National return in all its glory in 2022.

We sincerely thank our generous community for their ongoing support particularly our participants, volunteers, partners and friends who have given so much to the Festival throughout our history. Because of your generosity, time and commitment we are able to continue our work bringing the community together for future National Folk Festivals.

We also thank the Festival team for their commitment and resilience since our cancellation in March and in working hard to ensure the future viability of the Festival. The spirit of folk lives on and we look forward with hope to bring folk together in new ways over the next year, and to the Festival's return in 2022.

Dr Jacqueline Bradley
President
National Folk Festival

It was announced on Friday: In New York City Broadway Will Remain Closed at Least Through May. That's a huge number of jobs and the cascade effect of all of the services and food industry supporting the theaters.
