Psychologicaly when a person's emotions are broken, a secondary paranoia can overwhelm an individual. For example a black person in the US experiences many examples of law enforcement attacking and killing people like themselves and begin to generalize that all law enforcement are murdering bastards. Now after the attack on the capitol many white people have experienced for the first time that members of law enforcement among the mob were willing to put in jeopardy or kill them is a shock to their psyche. Learning the likelihood that the police can be the enemy is new to many white people who were not inclined to be criminals. Eventually a person can see personal attacks everywhere until physical health is also endangered.

Trmp resigns from Screen Actors Guild

He wrote a blatant letter in which the oprative phrase from his point of view is: "You have done nothing for me."

Pretty much sums up his attitude.

Tonight on the Rachel Maddow Show she's talking about how Trump refuses to call himself the former president. He has set up the office of the 45th President of the US, he's still using the presidential seal. I wonder how long he'll get away with that BS.

Pence has set up an office of the former Vice President, something like that.

Interesting you bring up Rachel Maddow. My hiking buddy is reading Bag Man and is getting me to read it, too. It's about Spiro Agnew and apparently has much to recommend it as an example of how things have NOT changed all that much.

I have that book in my tablet but haven't started it yet. It sounds fascinating (there was a blog on the same topic, which is why she expanded it into book form).

From The Guardian

"It was not just May who found Trump unsettling: to European diplomatic observers, he seemed a “strange creature”. And he also triggered alarm among some American officials in the room with him, with one defence official noting that the president’s notoriously short attention span suggested a “squirrel careening through the traffic”."

The feeling this end is that Trump is almost certain to be acquitted by the Senate. Whatever else happens, you have to find a way of preventing him from standing in 2024. I can't help feeling that the danger is far from over.

Oh sure... not enough Republicans are brave enough to vote to convict. It IS a useful way to make a point, though.
I am waiting for all the state indictments that will be filed after the show trial... I think Letitia James has over 60... and Georgia is working on some.

I can't find the damn thing now after 15 minutes' searching, and it's past my bedtime, but I hear that a poll concluded that only a narrow majority think that Trump should be convicted/punished (maybe you can find it). He still has masses of supporters, and that should worry us.

The Capitol Rioters Aren’t Like Other Extremists

We analyzed 193 people arrested in connection with the January 6 riot—and found a new kind of American radicalism.

On January 6, a mob of about 800 stormed the U.S. Capitol in support of former President Donald Trump, and many people made quick assumptions regarding who the insurrectionists were. Because a number of the rioters prominently displayed symbols of right-wing militias, for instance, some experts called for a crackdown on such groups. Violence organized and carried out by far-right militant organizations is disturbing, but it at least falls into a category familiar to law enforcement and the general public. However, a closer look at the people suspected of taking part in the Capitol riot suggests a different and potentially far more dangerous problem: a new kind of violent mass movement in which more “normal” Trump supporters—middle-class and, in many cases, middle-aged people without obvious ties to the far right—joined with extremists in an attempt to overturn a presidential election.

To understand the events of January 6 and devise solutions to prevent their recurrence, Americans need a fine-grained comprehension of who attacked the Capitol. Understanding the ideology and beliefs of those who commit political violence is important, but so is knowing what kind of people they are and what their lives are like.

For the past decade and a half, our research team at the Chicago Project on Security and Threats has conducted demographic studies of international and domestic terrorists.

The rest is at the link.

During the discussion of the presentations ahead they said they assume families will be watching these hearings together, and will try to give warnings ahead of time for any graphic content so parents can decide if their children should see it. It seems that blood and death and damage are going to be part of the evidence, which is appropriate in this. Maybe they can shame the GOP into voting their conscience and not acquitting Trump out of fear of his "base."

I just read an Oz ABC News article which mentioned that Trump is now facing criminal charges from New York and Georgia for attempting to influence the elections.

In answer to a reader's question, "What is Trump doing whilst all this is going on?" the journalist said:

"Trump was probably doing the same as yesterday and watching it unfold on TV, and that 'apparently he was none too pleased with his defence team's performance yesterday'.

"He was 'basically screaming,' according to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

" 'Trump was especially disappointed in the performance of his lawyer Bruce Castor, who gave a rambling argument, wore an ill-fitting suit and at one point praised the case presented by the Democratic House impeachment managers,' two people involved in the effort told the Washington Post."

Trump “had expected a swashbuckling lawyer and instead watched what was a confusing and disjointed performance".

I guess the suit his lawyer was wearing is of the ultimate importance??!!

Does the Senate's decision that the trial is constitutional carry constitutional weight? I'd was have thought that it does, and that in any future scenario it would be a pretty decisive precedent.

In which case there is no room for a Senator who voted for acquittal to argue that this was because they believed that it was unconstitutional, because this has already bee determined. The only thing they have any right to consider is guilt or inocence as charged.

Media are going to have to come to grips with the idea that as long as they highlight his antics they are giving his foolish followers energy and Trump himself oxygen. They need to resist covering him, and in particular stop letting him see his own visage on the television.

There's a calmness afoot these days that's very welcome. However, I'm disappointed with the indulgence that the US is affording the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. That disappointment extends to all the bootlicking that the West does with regard to that corrupt, anti-democratic, misogynistic and murderous regime, but a shot across the bows from the US would have at least sent a message.

We ALL know that we are in an outrageous face-off, thus we need to maintain a level of outrageousness that out-parodies the other guy's parody. That does leave open simply holding up a mirror to some fiberglass golden skinned figure wearing stars'n stripes shorts.

This past week, Republicans held a strategy where-are-we-now? meeting with their leader in exile, Donald 'the dumped' Trump.

This was at Mara Lago .

Trump's address departed prepared statements but as one might expect from, well, everything, was his attacks on Mitch McConnell and Mike Pence. The Republicans are not totally united, but the Republican party is still very much a party of Trump along with acolytes ready to steal, borrow, assume the mantle, with permission: current Florida Governor DeSantis and Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz.

I would love to say the plot 'sickens' but no, it's been pretty sick right along.

Nope. Wright (who died of COVID-19 after ignoring all of the safety measures recommended) had a highly-gerrymandered district to the east and southeast of me. Mine is just as bad, though. Kay Granger has swallowed most of the GOP party line, with very few exceptions (she actually supported health care a couple of times, I think.)

I heard one of the stations play part of Trump's remarks following the speech to the joint house and senate group - the news folks really do need to stop referring to him so he can truly fade away and become irrelevant.

Not a good idea Donuel partly because of the Tuskegee experiment and the hesitancy it created among African Americans - which I just heard about this week on an Australian ABC TV show - so there would possibly be a tendency for your idea to discriminate against them unintentionally.

Tuskegee was a long time ago and is very well known here, and isn't a good reason to avoid offering the entire population some kind of proof-of-vaccination, passport or other. Instead, making sure that today's individuals from all ethnic and racial groups have equal access and good information. Transparency is called for. Before that happens, though, a couple of major federal laws have to pass that render toothless all of the GOP legislation popping up in states that is designed to exclude and disenfranchise voters. So the goal for all sorts of other fair laws coming into place is to get rid of the filibuster. And there are two senators who steadfastly want to hold their seats so are not agreeing to vote to remove the filibuster. Some things are larger than those jobs, but you need to convince them of that. There have been people who knew it would work against them who still voted to approve valuable legislation, but that kind of altruism is rare.

Republicans have long demanded special voter ID cards. The 25% who are shunning vaccination are Republicans, ergo my earlier suggestion.

Putin has long said that elections are not determined by who votes for you but instaed, who counts the votes. The Cyber Ninjas are a trump-Q based group who is actually doing a vote recount of the Arizona ballots.
This akin to allowing only Republcans to vote.

We are so lucky that insurrectionists on January 6th did not fire upon Congress or burn down the building. It still serves as an opening of hostilities like Fort Sumter at the start of the civil war. There were no casualties during the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter at the start of the American Civil War. The only Union deaths came during the evacuation: One soldier was killed and another mortally wounded in an accidental explosion during a planned 100-gun salute. (so unlucky)
I am glad FB will not be a continual host of further hostilities.

The Supream Court has some monumental decisions to make. They could
propel a modern civil war over voting rights and new voter suppression laws that would insure minority rule.

I have long had the premonition of a civil war as a few of you know, I count our blessings that we are backing away from a Trump ivil war. After all we have already lost over half a million lives in the US. For perspectiv the bllodoest battle in the civilwar wa 23,000 at Shilo.
The total civil war deaths are 620,000 to 75o,000.

We continue to restore the capitol objects of art from their exspoure to feces and knives. I hope democracy itself can be restored.

I don't think Trmp is out of power at all. Far from it. He has established his own eponymic web site and we have yet to see if he will make it a go-to place in the increasingly crazy netiverse.

Meanwhile, if you've been paying attention to the case of Liz Cheney in trying to maintain veracity and a sense of decency in the Republican sphere of 'thought', Trmp has decreed that she be replaced as Republican House leader by a Trmptard Representative, Elise Stefanik. More interesting, in that Trmp as a leader in retirement could be a deep betrayer in that he leads so many so wrong, but if they are so many enought, they re-define what is right, as they have been doing for several years now including a while Trmp term of office. Also interesting, is that Elise Stefanick did not start out as a Trmpist, but as a fairly interesting moderate conservative.

This is not all due to Trmp. This is an accumulation of Zero Sum tactics going back as far as Reagan, but mostly due to the "Gingrich Revolution" sustained by Mitch Mcconnell. The rhetoric has been supplemented by elements of the 'press'.

Just to say, there is a right-wing juggernaut out there. It is a loose but persistent agglomeration of interwoven irrationality that won't dissolve all at once like the dead walkers in the final episode of GOT despite Trmp's likeness to the Night King (apologies to Richard Brake!)
