I'm going a session for preschool kids for the El Cerrito Free Folk Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I thought this would be a good chapter in the Rise Up Mudcat! online songbook.

Feel free to post the lyrics to your favorite songs for preschool kids.

-Joe-

Down By the Bay

Down by the bay (repeat),
Where the watermelons grow (repeat),
Back to my home (repeat),
I dare not go (repeat),
For if I do (repeat),
My mother will say:"

"Did you ever see a goose, kissing a moose?"
"Did you ever see an ant, eating a plant?"
"Did you ever see a whale, with a polka-dot tail?" (this is the original variation)
"Did you ever see a bear, combing his hair?"
"Did you ever see a llama, eating his pajamas?"
"Did you ever see a fly, wearing a tie?"
"Did you ever see a bee with a sunburned knee?"
"Did you ever have a time when you couldn't make a rhyme?"
"Did you ever see a rhino kissing a dino?" (Barney and Friends)
"Did you ever see a goat standing in a boat?"
"Did you ever wonder why, I've always sounded high?"
"This doggone song's gone on too long!" ..."Down by the bay."

Usually follows some kind of variation on "Did you ever see a _____, _____ing a _____", with rhyming words, for example:

MORNINGTOWN RIDE
(Malvina Reynolds)

Train whistle blowing, makes a sleepy noise
underneath their blankets go all the girls and boys
heading from the station, out along the bay
all bound for Morningtown, many miles away.

Sarah's at the engine, Tony rings the bell
John swings the lantern to show that all is well
Rocking, rolling, riding, out along the bay
all bound for Morningtown, many miles away.

Maybe it is raining where our train will ride
but all the little travelers are snug and warm inside
somewhere there is sunshine, somewhere there is day
somewhere there is Morningtown, many miles away.

DOWN BY THE STATION

Down by the station early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies all in a row
See the station master pull the little handle
Chug, chug, toot toot off we go!

Mr Rabbit, Mr Rabbit
You're in a mighty habit
Coming in my garden
Eating all my cabbage

ch
Every little soul (star) must shine, shine, shin-ine
Every little soul must shin-ine shine, shine

Mr Rabbit, Mr Rabbit
You tail is mighty white
Yes oh lord
I'm getting out of sight

Here's another version. -Joe-

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, your tail is mighty white.
Yes, my lord, I've been gettin' out of sight,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine.

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, your coat is mighty gray.
Yes, my lord, it was made that way,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine.

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, your ears are mighty long.
Yes, my lord, they were put on wrong,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine.

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, your ears are mighty thin.
Yes, my lord, they're a-splittin' the wind,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine.

Mr. Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, well, I'll bid you good day.
Yes, my lord, and I'll be on my way,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine,
Every little soul's gonna shine, shine.

LITTLE RED CABOOSE

Sing in normal voice:
Little red caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose
Behind the train, train, train, train
Coming around the track, track, track, track
Smokestack on its back, back, back, back
Little red caboose
Behind the train, choo! Choo

Sing in deep voice:
Great big caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Great big caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Great big caboose
Behind the train, train, train, train
Coming around the track, track, track, track
Smokestack on its back, back, back, back
Great big caboose
Behind the train, choo! Choo!

Sing in high-pitched voice:
Teeny tiny caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Teeny tiny caboose,
Chug, chug, chug
Teeny tiny caboose
Behind the train, train, train, train
Coming around the track, track, track, track
Smokestack on its back, back, back, back
Teeny tiny caboose
Behind the train, choo! Choo!
