I'm sure deaf and dumb folks benefit from the sign language shown on iplayer, but as I am neither want to get rid of it, can it be disabled from the News Channel?

What you mean is that it didn't give you the answer that you want.

The answer may be disappointing but it is unambiguous.

Best to watch it on replay then there is no deaf and dumb signs.

From Google: '"Deaf and dumb" (or even just "dumb", when applied to deaf people who do not speak) is an archaic term that is considered offensive. Many Deaf people do not use a spoken language, thus they are technically "mute". The word "dumb" has at least an archaic meaning that means "mute".'

ok.. seeing as anonymous GUEST white knights are on the prowl
looking for causes to champion,
and folks to be offended on behalf of...

Why should deaf folks feel so entitled
to have signers on pre-recorded news and entertainment programs hogging so much of the screen image,
shrinking the size of the actual videos,
while expecting the rest of us to be too guilted by threat of abuse,
to openly complain...???

Why can't they compromise and at least settle for perfectly adequate sub titles...?????

There may be a case for still signing live broadcasts
if the on screen signing is more accurate in real time
than speech to text,
But technology is always improving...

I'm personally fed up with recording TV and downloaded catchup
when the distracting signer obtrudes on screen,
but there is no option remaining
to find available unsigned versions of these programs.

If I become deaf, I'll want subtitles..
Surely most deaf folks can read..

.. and before some internet warrior accuses me of being deafist,
I will more than likely lose my hearing as I get older.
I've had life changing hearing problems and surgery
since my 20s...

We all have to tolerate a few little irritations in life.

As this thread illustrates.

That's so profound..

Life will never be the same again after that astounding revelation...

..mind you, minor irritations can be minimised,
sometimes even resolved completely,
if folks are prepared to consider reasonable fair compromises...

The original question is valid, the squabbling about terminology is not - whether or not the term in question is appropriate. Drop the terminology argument, or I'll delete the damn thread.

I would think if you go to languages and subtitles, you may well find a menu choice that will allow you to disable sign language.

If anybody knows the correct answer, please post.

The answer my friend is in Google, but it’s double-edged. I.e. you can turn BSL (British Sign Language) off for some programmes on iPlayer, but not others, which have been especially made that way as separate transmissions for people who need BSL.
I use subtitles a lot but am not a signer. Found out how to switch subtitles on by using Google also. Not every programme has that facility either.

In 2020, there is no technological reason why signing cannot be provided
as a switch on or off optional function,
for any deaf TV viewers who prefer it to subtitling.
The foundations already exist in Red Button and subtitling services.
Online streaming provides even more potential.

There is also no reason why the interests of hearing and deaf folks
should continue to be pitted against each other..

This is an unnecessarily divisive situation.

At present TV broadcasters only pay basic lip service to their deaf equality obligations.

Any real solutions are down to broadcasters having the will to invest sufficient money
on upgraded easily accessible user friendly technology.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell - On a scale of 0 to COVID lockdown, how irritating is it?

I too find the signing distracting but can rejoice in having some hearing left after years in very noisy environs, vocationally.

A small comfort, but a comfort.
