Subject: That'll be the day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Feb 21 - 05:31 AM 64 years ago today, Buddy Holly recorded That'll be the Day with The Crickets in Norman Petty's studio - infinitely better than the original Decca version. It has surely stood the test of time!! |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Feb 21 - 07:22 AM Completely agree, Bonz. I can remember the first time I heard it - I was 10 and my auntie took me to the funfair which came to the rough ground down the street from my gran’s. They played in on the Gallopers, and my life was changed forever. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Feb 21 - 07:24 AM I was still singing it with the R&R band I played with from the mid-‘90s until 2005-ish. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:01 AM I he'll never last' (musically, of course) bought the 78 some time in 57/58- my mum listened to it & said 'he'll never last' (musically of course. Well BH lasted a long time, and I'm still a fan, but I'm not sure he means much to today's generation..... |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:02 AM sorry about the garbling at the start- must check my work! |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! From: punkfolkrocker Date: 27 Feb 21 - 12:35 PM Big loud speakers at a funfair, .. still the ideal way to hear real rock and roll.. Fortunately a showman who ran rides at a fair, which occasionally visited our part of Scrumpyshire, upheld that great tradition... Fingers crossed covid has not permanently killed off funfair rock and roll... |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Bonzo3legs Date: 02 Mar 21 - 01:55 AM 63 years ago today Buddy Holly & The Crickets started their tour of the UK! |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Mar 21 - 02:12 AM Wikipedia says "That'll Be the Day" was written by Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison. It was first recorded by Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes for Decca in 1956, but Decca did not release that recording. It was re-recorded on February 25, 1957 by Buddy Holly and his new band, The Crickets. And it gets even more convoluted and confusing. Read the Wikipedia article. It's an interesting insight into the music industry. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 02 Mar 21 - 04:46 AM The 78 recording of this classic song I bought in England in 1957 or 8? was on the Coral label. I don't have it any more but I have a feeling it was labelled as by 'The Crickets' with no mention of BH, although he was the singer & certainly WAS billed on 'Peggy Sue' & the rest. - it's a long time ago, is my memory playing tricks? |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: JHW Date: 02 Mar 21 - 04:54 AM Someone sang 'When I'm 64' Used to think that was old. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: GUEST,Trevor Sheridan Date: 02 Mar 21 - 02:24 PM You are right Jim. It was the Crickets only and I had it as well and along with many others over the years it got broken...shellac! However Lonnie Donegan 78's on vinyl survived and quite a few others that I really looked after |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Malcolm Storey Date: 02 Mar 21 - 02:57 PM Saw Buddy and the Crickets live - have the programme somewhere. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: The Sandman Date: 03 Mar 21 - 02:51 AM I saw Jimi Hendrix live, there was no programme you paid your money and you experienced, probably a bit wild compared to Buddy and his Cricket,Jimi was certainly bowling the maidens over |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: JHW Date: 03 Mar 21 - 05:53 AM 'funfair rock and roll... ' is yet another memory. Waltzer cars spinning while guys hang over the back to take the money. Long time since I did that but you're right about the showground amps and speakers. Todays music lovers I guess would rather download a track and listen on the ubiquitous smartphone. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Raggytash Date: 03 Mar 21 - 06:20 AM A serious question Bonzo, why did you post this after 64 years. It seems a strange anniversary to celebrate. 25, 40, 50, 75 or even 65 years would normally be the accepted milestones. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: GUEST,henryp Date: 03 Mar 21 - 06:47 AM Send me a postcard, drop me a line, if you're still alive. Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-five? |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Raggytash Date: 03 Mar 21 - 06:57 AM Had Bonzo chosen to post about the Beatles song "When I'm Sixty Four" that would have been understandable. PS Henryp your "poetry" is appalling !! ;-) Don't give up your day job!! |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Jos Date: 03 Mar 21 - 08:11 AM Re: "Henryp your "poetry" is appalling !! ;-)" Nothing wrong with it. It rhymes AND it SCANS, which is more than can be said of many a poem posted on Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: GUEST,henryp Date: 03 Mar 21 - 08:21 AM Sorry to say, but I've lost my poetic licence. |
Subject: RE: That'll be the day! - recorded 64 years ago From: Raggytash Date: 03 Mar 21 - 08:25 AM Jos, I didn't say it didn't rhyme or that it didn't scan I merely stated I considered it appalling :-) !!! |
