THE SECOND DAY OF MAY

(words & music by Larry McLaughlin)

Padstow on the Second Day of May in a pub with singing of the song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2h65pB_cIw
Padstow on the Second Day of May sung at The Golden Lion Hotel,Padstow by members of the Cape Cornwall Singers, Wadebridge's Shipwrecks, and others    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdbo7ks25k8

When the flowers have all faded,
And the streets are looking bare,
And the 'Osses have been stabled,
And the crowds no longer there,
You can stroll around the harbour,
And watch the small boats in the bay,
You can have a drink with old friends,
On the Second Day of May.

As a youth I came into this town,
There were 'Osses in the square,
There was red and white and blue and white, And flowers everywhere,
They were singing, they were dancing,
Oh, it turned my mind astray,
For I had come to Padstow
On the First day of May.

But when the flowers have all faded,
And the streets are looking bare,
And the 'Osses have been stabled,
And the crowds no longer there,
You can stroll around the harbour,
And watch the small boats in the bay,
You can have a drink with old friends,
On the Second Day of May.

Now some dancers they are dead and gone,
The rest are getting slow,
But the young ones they will carry on,
Traditions they all know.
Though my dancing days are nearly done,
And the years have slipped away,
I will always remember Padstow,
And my first, First Day of May.

But when the flowers have all faded,
And the streets are looking bare,
And the 'Osses have been stabled,
And the crowds no longer there,
You can stroll around the harbour,
And watch the small boats in the bay,
You can have a drink with old friends,
On the Second Day of May.

Unite, oh unite and let us all unite,
For summer is a-coming today,
You can have a drink with old friends,
On the Second Day of May.

JOCKEY TO THE FAIR , Roud Number: 3344

’Twas on the morn of sweet May-day,
When nature painted all things gay,
Taught birds to sing, and lambs to play,
And gild the meadows fair;
Young Jockey, early in the dawn,
Arose and tripped it o’er the lawn;

23 May On this day in 1701: Scottish pirate William Kidd was hanged at Execution Dock in London for piracy.

Oh, my name is Captain Kidd, as I sailed, as I sailed,
Oh, my name is Captain Kidd, as I sailed.
Oh, my name is William Kidd,
Many wicked things I did,
And the law I did forbid, as I sailed, as I sailed.

23 May On this day in 1706: Marlborough defeated the French at the Battle of Ramillies in Belgium.

"Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre" ("Marlborough Has Left for the War"), which was composed the night after the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709. It was popularized by a nurse singing it to one of Marie Antoinette's infants as a lullaby. The tune has been adopted for He's A Jolly Good Fellow.

Malbrough

http://www.goldenhindmusic.com/lyrics/LORDMELB.html John Roberts & Tony Barrand In Lincolnshire Posy this is categorized as "'Lord Melbourne' (War Song)," where it is given a fanfare-like, almost arhythmic treatment. The song is better known as Lord Marlborough, to whom it properly refers. John Churchill (1650-1722), 1st Duke of Marlborough, soldier and statesman, is perhaps best known for his "glorious victories" against the French at Blenheim and Ramillies. He was a meticulous planner, and was also known for his consideration of the welfare of his soldiers, which is perhaps why he became so popular in balladry. He was also an ancestor of Winston Churchill, whose elder brother Charles became the 9th Duke of Marlborough in 1892.

I am an Englishman to my birth, Lord Melbourne is my name;
In Devonshire I first drew breath, that place of noble fame.
I was beloved by all my men, by kings and princes likewise.
I never failed in anything, but won great victories.

23 May On this day in 1934: Bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot dead in an ambush by Texas Rangers near Gibland, Louisiana.

THE BALLAD OF BONNIE AND CLYDE is a song, written by Mitch Murray and Peter Callander, and recorded by the British rhythm and blues singer Georgie Fame. Released as a single, the song reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for one week from 24 January 1968. The song reached number seven in the US Billboard Chart later the same year. Wikipedia

THE PRAISE OF A DAIRY
(sung to the air of Packington’s Pound)

In praise of a dairy I purpose to sing,
But all things in order, first, God save the King!
And the Queen, I may say,
That every May-day, Has many fair dairy-maids all fine and gay.
Assist me, fair damsels, to finish my theme,
Inspiring my fancy with strawberry cream.

24 May On this day in 1809: Dartmoor Prison was opened to house French prisoners of war. From 1850 it was used for convicts.

TWENTY ONE YEARS ON DARTMOOR

The judge said, “Stand up, boy, and dry up your tears.
You're sentenced to Dartmoor for twenty-one years.”
So kiss me goodbye, babe, and say you'll be mine,
For twenty-one years, love, is a mighty long time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duO5vZyBXaw
21 Years

Tim van Eyken sang Twenty-One Years on Dartmoor in 2004 on Waterson:Carthy's fifth album, Fishes & Fine Yellow Sand.

Martin Carthy commented in the liner notes: The album is topped and tailed by Goodbye Fare You Well and Twenty-One Years on Dartmoor. […] Tim learned the latter from a recording of the lovely London born, Sussex dwelling singer Louie Fuller who sadly died just this year. It's great to come upon an old American song which has made the crossing the other way for a change and this is one which has been given a real working over into an English vernacular. Subject: indexing May songs
From: Felipa
Date: 25 May 23 - 09:03 PM

I think there are likely to be several repeats in this discussion of May songs. My message refers to the two previous messages, posted 24 and 25 May 2023. Henry P. mentioned Whitsun Dance (the ladies go dancing at Whitsun) on 31 March 2021. Henry also mentioned a line in Bogie's Bonnie Belle "Ae Whitsun day at Huntly toun 'twas there I did agree
Wi auld Bogieside a fairmer a six-month for tae fee" but I don't see Bogie's Bonnie Belle listed in the index at the beginning of this 7 page thread. I wonder if Bogie's Bonnie Belle is mentioned as a June song, as any Whitsun song might be appropriate in either May or June of a given year. I also don't see the Whaddon Whitsun Song in the index; henry p posted that in a separate message, also on 31 March 2021

I posted re Dh'èirich mi moch madainn Chèitein on 13 Jun 21; I see admin (Geoff) has linked the two messages but left out a letter "i" in the word "dh'èirich". The lyrics of that Gaelic song are on Mudcat at https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=122289

WILLIAM EDDY

May, 1846.    The Donner-Reed wagon train, composed of group of American pioneers left Independence, Missouri, migrating to California. The wagon train encountered great difficulties and some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, eating the bodies of those who had died as a result of starvation, sickness, and extreme cold.

POLLY ON THE SHORE

Come all you wild young men
And a warning take by me,
Never to lead your single life astray
And into no bad company.

As I myself have done,
It being in the merry month of May,
When I was pressed by a sea-captain
And on board a man-o-war I was sent.

We sailed on the ocean so wide
And our bonny bonny flag we let fly.
Let every man stand true to his gun
For the Lord knows who must die.

Oh our captain was wounded full sore
And so were the rest of his men.
Our main mast rigging it was scattered on the deck
So that we were obliged to give in.

Oh our decks they were spattered with blood
And so loudly the cannons did roar;
And thousands of times have I wished myself at home
And all along with my Polly on the shore.

She's a tall and a slender girl,
She's a dark and a-rolling eye,
And here am I lie a-bleeding on the deck
And for her sweet sake I would die.

So farewell to my parents and friends,
Farewell my dear Polly too.
I ne'er would have crossed this salt sea so wide
If I had been ruled by you.

Do you ever remember?
Now you are so far away

Crazy things we'd say

When every word was a song
There were so many gay times
Before it all went all so wrong

BEN, BEN VENI MAG  -  Cantovivo    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD40rqBXCJA

Translation from the Piedmontese courtesy of Cattia Salto, Google Translate and Monique

Let May come well, let May come well
when the month of May returns.

Mistress, if you don't want to believe that May has arrived,
look out the window and you will see it firmly planted.

Look at our bride, how well dressed she is
She looks like the peach blossom when covered in buds.

Look at our bride what a beautiful dress she has
Who knows who bought it for her, it must have been her mother.

Look at our bride what a beautiful hat she has
Who knows who bought it for her, it must have been her dad.

Look at our bride, what a beautiful ring she has
who knows who bought it for her, it must have been her fiancé.

[We enter this house if there are good people
we ask permission (to go) if everyone is happy]

Oh, you mistress if you want to pay
the rest of us are on our way and we must go.

[To you mistress who paid
we pray to Saint Anthony to give you sanctity.

To you mistress, who have not paid,
(We wish you) Hornets in the head and wasps in the breast]

Whitsun falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter. This usually comes in late May or early June. In 2024 the date will be May 19, because of an early Easter. Whitsuntide, the week following Whitsunday, was one of three holiday weeks for the medieval villein; on most manors he was free from service on the lord's demesne this week, which marked a pause in the agricultural year. It continued to be a holiday for workers. The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould's words for ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS , first published in the Church Times in 1864, were sung in 1865 by the children of Horbury Bridge as they marched up the hill to St. Peter’s, Horbury, in the annual Whit Tuesday procession. Eventually, the hymn was set to the tune 'St Gertrude', composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1871.

Horbury Church; This year is the 100th anniversary of the death of Fr Sabine Baring-Gould, who was curate of Horbury from 1864-1867 under Canon John Sharp. We are pleased to be able to mark the centenary of Fr Sabine’s death in the parish for which he wrote ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’ over Whit Weekend 2024. The weekend opens on Friday, 17th May at 7pm with a concert at Horbury Working Members’ Club with award-winning folk artists Jim Causley and Miranda Sykes, who present ‘Ghosts, Werewolves and Country Folk – Songs and Stories of Sabine Baring-Gould’. Our celebrations then come to a climax with the re-enactment of the Whit Walk on Sunday, 19th May at 2pm.
