Stars'n Stripes Forever is one of those quintessential American songs to me, the other is Sing, Sing, Sing as writted by Louis Prima and performed by Benny Goodman.

And to be sharing the time with friends from across the pond reminds me of a Bicentennial mug I saw in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston:

I'm going to skip the public festivities, apparently the new virus strain is on the rise in the western states. Also don't feel like dealing with rah-rah militaristic patriotism these days.

Probably have to skip the zoom this week, will be on the road. But I had been thinking about 'songs for the 4th'.   I feel a lot more affection for the varied people of the US, and its magnificent landscapes, then for flag and government.

Long ago I got to hear Frank Jr. at a small club and he did a wonderful performance of a song he said was a favorite of his Dad's. "The House I Live In".   Long years later, I was at a big rest stop on the freeway south of Philly, there was a McDonald's as I recall, and the place was jumping with people traveling here and there, all kinds, a babble of languages, so much energy and variety, the melting pot on the move.   The song started running through my mind.

This is a short that was produced on the subject of 'tolerance'. It was during WWII, and remember black soldiers, and women, were still in segregated outfits. If you don't want to hear Frank Sr. sing something sappy, then give the tolerance lecture, then skip to 7:00 when he actually sings the song.

for me, the day has a sad nostalgia. The parents long dead will not be organizing a picnic in the park, with brats and burgers on the grill and home-made potato salad.

The whole family will not be going to the fireworks tonight. Fireworks, heck. The next generations doesn't even answer my e-mails, forget going somewhere with me.

Donuel, thanks for the link. That piccolo solo is one of my favorite things. Did you know that ragtime and Sousa marches share the technique of starting on the tonic and leaping to the fourth in the next section? I think they share other features too, but I forget what they are.

..and I celebrate his inclusion of the piccolo solo! I played in my high school band, which had 2 excellent players. Sitting 10 ft. from the piccolo solo LIVE is an amazing experience.

But the celebration this year is tempered by my constant awareness of various attempts to undermine the basic principles of what it stands for.

It isn't every year that
the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday.

Where I am spending the summer,
the party being thrown before sundown
includes invitees who are not only
friends and family,
but their pet dogs.

Presumably the dogs will not participate in the kickball game.
