Subject: Obscure Female folk w/ only 1 or 2 LP'S
From: GUEST,Lin
Date: 10 Jul 21 - 09:40 PM

I'm looking to find out about obscure female folk singers who had NO MORE then one or two folk LP's released in the 1960's and 1970's only. Of course these would be unknown artist's for the most part. For this particular thread, I am ONLY looking for female folk singers. No duos with males.
If you can provide the album name and what country artist is from too,(if known), that would be appreciated.
Folk only, not other genre's please.
Thank you.

I thought of one who is definitely obscure, but not so obscure as what you're looking for. And maybe a decade too young for your requirements. Do you have someone in mind as a starting point?

To Stilly River Sage,

Yes, two obscure folk Lp's released around 1963 by the late folk singer, Dayle Stanley from Massachusetts.
She passed away in January 2021 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The albums are: "After the Snow" and "Child of Hollow Times"

My friend is Linda Russell, who performs (or used to? She may be retired) at National Park Service locations in New York City and beyond. You can find her few LPs Amazon, etc. She is folk, but she has other performers join her. (Though, as I think about it, you could probably contact her and ask about other women performers from the period you're interested in.)

British folk singer, Deena Webster had one LP that was released in 1968.

Scottish folk singer, Shelagh McDonald released two LPs, Album and Stargazer, on B&C in 1970/71. She wasn't obscure but quite well known at the time before she suddenly disappeared for decades.

Gemma Hasson made more recordings than I realised:
https://www.discogs.com/artist/1478067-Gemma-Hasson

Fionnuala Mac Lochlainn only made one album, on Gael-Linn. At least two of her children are singers (and got some of their songs from their parents), but are also not high-profile.

To Felipa,

Thank you for telling me about Gemma Hasson. I enjoyed hearing her songs on Youtube. I am in USA and though I have listened to tons of folk music over the years, you don't always get to hear some of the more obscure artists, especially if they only had one or two albums LP's or tapes.
In some cases, yes, they made have had a few more but still pretty obscure. Have a listen on Youtube to one girl I mentioned named, Dayle Stanley. Definitely had only two LP's in the 1960's. She does a beautiful cover of "Shenandoah" and of an original song called, "Letter from the Willow Tree."
(a very haunting ballad.)

I came across Chana/Hannah Roth on youtube. She only had two albums easily accessible to English speakers, but once I got the Hebrew lettering for her name and did another search I found she was well-known as an actress in Israel and had made other recordings. Chana emigrated to Israel from Italy, and she mainly sang in Yiddish.

I neglected to say that Gemma Hasson and Fionnuala Mac Lochlainn are both from and resident in Ireland. Gemma in N Ireland, Fionnuala from Dublin, retired to Salthill, Galway (and is now in her 90s).

I don't think the late Rosemary Woods, from Portaferry, Co Down, N Ireland, is well-known nor made many recordings. But her recordings were made in the 1980s-90s.

If you are still interested, you can find some samples of Rosemary's singing and songwriting on youtube. I don't know the original date of this "Belfast Mill" which is not listed in discogs.com = 1980s? Unlike later work, it features traditional songs rather than Rosemary's own material. It's been posted on Spotify with a 2016 date

If the year 1980 counts as one of the 70's (it is the 10th year in that series after all), my suggestion here would be:

Wendy Grossman.
She released one LP "Roseville Fair".
Discogs Page

I found this album in Amsterdam with a note she herself wrote to thank a person she apparently stayed with in A'dam.
I contacted her a couple of years ago. Nice lady. Great musician IMO.

r.padgett, the Pat Ryan that you mention – could she be the same Pat Ryan who put out an album, Gentle Reminders, with Ken Howard in 2004? The CD has Lancashire Lads on it, and Over the Lancashire Hills.

Wendy Grossman often sings and plays on the Monday night Mudcat sings and I appreciated her contributions greatly. So if she makes another recording, I'd be in the queue to buy.

Chris B (Born Again Scouser) :
Ann Briggs probably isn't obscure enough. She has well more than two recordings
https://www.discogs.com/artist/221580-Anne-Briggs

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Briggs> lists six solo albums, not to mention her recordings with other artists.

Would Karen Dalton be obscure enough?
It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best (Capitol 1969)
In My Own Time (Just Sunshine Records 1971)

Karen died in March 1993 from an AIDS-related illness.

Sybille Baier. She has one album.
The songs on the album were originally home made recordings from the 1970s but they weren't commercially released until 2006.

Fiona Sampson was with duo "Therapy" in the 60s/70s but went solo in the 70s with her solo album "Beneath the Rose". As far as I know it was the only one. It is very good and i have it as MP3s if anyone wants a listen.

She didn't perform at all for ages apart from some church stuff but may be about again now.

Barbara Carns (1926-2002), had at least one lp, "Trouble in Mind" on Living Folk Records; LFR101. Was an accomplished singer/guitarist who played in Atlanta, New Bedford, and various venues in the Boston area. Barbara was a loved and respected figure of the New England folk community.
