In Tokyo, the olympic village has furnished all its athletes with cardboard beds which are designed to break under the weight of sex to discourage Covid transmission. That made me wonder how much weight/force that is and who calculated the force of sex'?

My initial attempt estimated the energy to be >2,000 Newtons/joules. However at that weight, just plopping down on the bed would break it.
So extreme olympic sex would need to be measured...Whoppee
I suppose the Bill Clinton definition of sex would have to be used.
A great deal of research is still required imo.

I can imagine athletes jumping on their beds to deliberatly break them and if they get replacements. New records are bound to be broken along with the beds.

And, of course, it's a hoax (from Don's article):
The cardboard beds, it has been claimed, will break apart at the slightest provocation, designed to take the weight of only a solitary individual, or risk collapsing into pieces.

As amusing as it is to imagine some grim-faced Olympic official ordering a fleet of flimsy beds, unable to conceive of a sexual activity that doesn’t require a sturdy mattress, the entire story is a complete fabrication.

The rumor appears to have been sparked by Twitter (where else?), inspired by the concerns of coronavirus spread among athletes.

The cardboard beds, however, are very real - but are not designed to collapse at the weight of intimacy. The beds were planned for the Tokyo Olympics as a recycling initiative, long before the spread of COVID-19.

Indeed, the cardboard beds were featured in USA Today in September 2019, and in AP News in January 2020, with no mention of their supposed anti-sexual properties.

If it WERE true, imagine the problems in designing beds for 95lb. gymnasts and 260lb. shotputters. Silly concept on the face of it.
Besides, anyone determined to indulge in sex would have no problem avoiding such a bed.. (It's like the old joke that the 'best contraceptive' is an aspirin..... held tightly between the knees.)

I'd think putting the mattress on the floor would take care of the cardboard frame problem.

I was a guest at an international festival in Spain many years ago where we stayed in hostel and were provided with cardboard beds. They were being trialled and were intended for use in disaster relief. A thin mattress was laid on top and they wer quite comfortable.

I can confirm Manitas's accout of the cardboard beds - nearly 30 years ago, was it? I thought they were excellent.

They should have got Youth Hostel standard beds of the 1980s. I speak from experience. Broken slats can have quite sharp splinters.

Black belt caterpillar wrestler, My car is named Robin because it is the red version of the GM black batmoble made by the cadillac chief designer back in 2013.

That's it Jos. Matadapera. Micca on the balcony applying savlon under his kilt and performing a fling when it started to sting, to the great dismay of the people on the balcony below.

I found a youtube video of Matadepera from an Italian group (I haven't watched it all yet - it's over two hours long) but it turns out it was exactly 29 years ago.
I hardly slept for three days, just too much going on, but there was a life-saving bean-to-cup coffee machine on the ground floor.
That suggests I didn't get to use the cardboard bed very much but when I did it was really appreciated.

We were walking the dog who has yet to experience her first hormonal surge, and the subject came up that all the dogs shown at the recently concluded Dog Show have to be 'intact'. So we were wondering how crazy it could get at the canine after party.

It'll be hard to report proudly that one 'broke the bed'.

I'm wondering if we can help out...

Crumpled the cardboard?

Planked the paper?

Origami'd that sucker!

Almost but not entirely unrelated:

The town of Booneville, California, an old gold rush site, developed some expressions unique to themselves. Their term for earnest under-the-sheets activity was 'rickychow', which referred to the sound of old rusty springs in use.

That would not apply here.
