Storm asked at the Singaround for songs by Jim Ringer. Larry Joba sang this one.

RACHEL Jim Ringer

Rachel was a girl I used to love when I was young
You should have heard the love songs that I sung
Should have heard the way we talked
Walkin' 'long the stream
Barefoot through the meadow
By the lazy San Joaquin

Rachel was a melody that I first learned to sing
A sorceress just barely in her teens
A skinny dippin' sight to see
With freckles everywhere
A queen in faded hand me downs
With wild flowers in her hair

She had a way of sayin' this was never gonna end
And good night like a lover and good morning like a friend
Rachel was a watermelon ripe and freshly stole
First girl that I ever loved, first lie that I told

[break]

Rachel laughed and Rachel Sang and Rachel held my hand
Rachel watched me grow into a man
Rachel sat and listened to me
When I told a lie
Rachel waved me out of sight
When I said goodbye

The San Joaquin still rolls along where me and Rachel strolled
But the meadows turned to parking lots and me and Rachel's old
Rachel's just a memory that I still like to hold
First girl that I ever loved, first lie that I told

Thats a song I haven't heard in 40 years. Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin where some of the early Philo Records artists. I saw them together a few times. Mostly in Ithaca New York at Cornell Folk Club events. I have Jim's recording "Good To Get Home" and Mary McCaslin's "Way Out West". Wonderful songwriters and performers.

Don

There's a YouTube channel for Jim Ringer:

Jim Ringer had a Folk-Legacy album, Waitin' For the Hard Times to Go Folk-legacy FSI-47. It is now available from Smithsonian Folkways

Notes: This is the first recording of folk singer Jim Ringer, joined by accomplished singer-songwriter and frequent collaborator Mary McCaslin, Jay Ungar, Jon Wilcox, and folk-legend Utah Philips. On Waitin' for the Hard Times to Go, Ringer plays guitar and sings a calm baritone, accompanied with vocal harmonies and fiddle. At the time of this album's recording in 1972, Ringer did not posses a steady address and had spent much of his life as a traveling laborer, working various construction jobs as he drifted through the West. As such, Ringer's gentle delivery possesses a subtle intensity and authenticity that speaks to the years of nomadism and uncertainty that preceded his time as a professional musician; as Folk-Legacy founder Sandy Paton put it, "when you’ve seen those hard times, first-hand, you just naturally learn how to sing about them".

Track Listing:
  1. Waitin' for the Hard Times to Go
  2. Paradise
  3. Every Bush and Tree
  4. Towser Jenkins
  5. I Gotta Get Drunk
