Try Dick Devall's 1929 recording of 'Tom Sherman's Barroom'. Recorded in Dallas TX and issued as a commercial 78.

Take note 78 in the thread title does not mean the actual number of variations to Francis Henry Maynard's song "The Dying Cowboy"

Check Sandburg for "The Handsome Young Airman" or "Taurpalin Jacket". It is a variant
of "Streets of Laredo".

So, 78 isn't the number of variations, it's the number of revolutions per minute of the recording, right?

**=F.H. Maynard VS. ++=Ken Maynard CHORUS-----

**Then muffle the drums and play the dead
**marches:

++Oh beat the drum slowly oh play the fife lowly
++Oh play the dead march as they carry me along

**Play the dead march as I'm carried along:
**Take me to the church-yard and lay the sod
**o'er me.
**I'm a young ranger and know I've done
**wrong.

++carry me to the graveyard and pour the sod
++o'er me.
++for I'm only a poor cowboy and I know I've done
++wrong.

**F. H. Maynard The Dying Cowboy VS.++Ken Maynard The Cowboy's Lament)

**As I rode down by Tom Sherman's bar-room
**Tom Sherman's bar-room so early one day.

++I come out of Austin's fair city oh Austin's fair city
++Oh Austin's fair city 'twas early one day.

**There I spied a handsome young "ranger"
**All wrapped in white linen,and cold as the clay.

++I spied a young "cowboy" a handsome young cowboy
++All dressed in white linen an cold as the clay.

**I see by your outfit that you are a ranger."
**The words that he said as I went riding by.

++I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy
++These words he did say as I boldly step by.

**"Come sit down beside me, and hear my
**sad story.

++"Come sit down beside me, and hear my
++sad story.

**I'm shot through the breast and know I must
**die."
CHORUS------

++For I'm shot in the breast and I know I must
++die."
CHORUS------
