Subject: BS: Transatlantic crossword! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Mar 22 - 05:06 AM I have never really been one for crosswords but while i was working I used to do the Daily Mirror quick crossword as a 5 minute break while I was taking a break. Since retirement I discovered their daily crossword which takes a bit longer and is quite interesting. It is good in that even if you do not know the word you can usualy get it from letters in the other words made up from it. https://games.mirror.co.uk/game/mirror-daily-crossword?categoryId=crosswords-sudokus-and-word-games What is curious is that it does seem quite US Centric in its spellings and in some of its clues. Maybe others from both sides of the Atlantic may enjoy it too? |
Subject: RE: BS: Transatlantic crossword! From: Malcolm Storey Date: 04 Mar 22 - 07:50 PM This brings back an old memory. I have since school days enjoyed crosswords and graduated from fairly simple ones to the Times at the pub with Mike Pittock. During the working day I usually took the Independent, the Mail was a good standard but I would never bring myself to buy it although I would accept the puzzle page from our resident Fascist. One day one of the crew asked me why I did not do the Mirror? I replied that it was not challenging enough. I was then asked to complete the next day's one while the chaps timed me. I raced through it in no time except for one clue which I could not complete although I was sure the rest of the puzzle was correct. The reason why was obvious the next day when it turned out to be a US spelling!!!!! The chaps who had ribbed me the day before were gracious enough to accept that I should be forgiven. They were a great bunch and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with them - happy days. |
