This is a song written by an unknown sailor, sung to Down Below.
CORROSION HAS SET IN
Tune: Down below.

Corrosion has set in
Dahn below.
The plates are getting thin
Dahn below.
There's a leak in the fore peak,
And how those bulkheads creak,
I hope we'll last the week
Dahn below.

Boiler room's a-leaking
Dahn below.
Crack is nicely seeping
Dahn below
Fire and bilge will do their best
While the diver's getting dressed
Splinter-box will do the rest
Dahn below

Chippy wears a frahn
Dahn below.
It's coming in again
Dahn below,
They've taken up a shore
To the for'ard naval store
And they're sawing up some more
Dahn below

. Chippy's got an ulcer
Dahn below.
It plays him up a treat
Dahn below.
His feet are getting wet
As he watches concrete set,
But he's short of 'aggreget'
Dahn below,

The ship is like a sieve
Dahn below.
I hope they're PST
Dahn below.
For the lifeboats they inflate
Premature. Can this be fate?
Oh we're in a ghastly state
Dahn below.

Beleived to have been about HMS Chilcompton.
there is one, maybe two verses missing.
Anyone know them?

Me old mate Cyril Tawney sang them the song is on his "In THE NAVAL SPIRIT" album. Cyril attributes the song to HMS Cheviot circa 1958. Yours, Aye. Dave

Information taken from Grey funnel line written by Cyril.
BTW have you come across Shep Woolley in your travels as I have a few of his albums as well as Cyril's.

Dave, I have The book Grey Funnel Lines compiled/written by Cyril Tawney a fantastic book if you can get it,I waited for months until a copy turned up and it cost around £30.Shep Woolley was a Gunnery Instructor at Whale Island and he played and sang with Cyril on the album "In The Naval Spirit".I am slowly collecting albums of Naval & seafaring songs, a lucky find the other day was a copy of Burl Ives "Down To The Sea In Ships" but my record player has given up the ghost so I will have to get a new one.
Cheers me dears, dave from Dorset.

Search for said book in ABEbooks.com. They have one copy listed at the moment for 21 pounds - I thought of buying it myself but I'll let the rest of you scramble for it.

In fact, search for any book there - it is quite remarkable that you seem to be able to get any second-hand there. It is a network of 5500 second hand book dealers that seems to be world wide, or maybe just western hemisphere, I am not sure. If I was richer, it would be my favorite site.

My wife has forbidden me to buy another book until we get another bookcase, or a house with a larger basement. So I have to inhabit libraries now, unfortunately. Try to salvage any book of sea songs you can; we singing matelots are becoming an endangered species mate. I don't miss hoofing it around the Portland Bill in me combat togs, but do miss the songs and stories....Nostalgia has set in Dahn below, the bullshits getting thin Dahn below, me mates are all asleep, or resting in the deep, or buried in a heap, Dahn below........Yours, Aye. Dave
