I quite like the clichés in Bond movies (if not his love of monarchism): when he visits Greece, we get the bouzouki and plates being thrown; in Mexico, we get a Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead parade...and who knows, to keep the English end up, we may one day see him duck around some maypole dances as he chases the next villain!

What you're espousing, WAV, sounds more like segregation and intolerance (and not just in things musical) than diversity. I enjoy playing a Swedish Schottisse as much as I do a Southern Mountain banjo tune and if someone told me I had to stick to one or the other I'd tell them to go stuff it.

Back to the horses: I had to laugh at the commentator's description of what the Irish Guards were parading to, giving the impression that the 2 sets had been composed for the occasion: I think "arranged" is the word he should have used.
"Irish Saffron" included John Ryan's Polka, I'll Tell me Ma, and If you're Irish, come into the parlour. And
"The Mists of Shannon" was in fact The Cliffs of Dooneen followed by Spancil Hill.

As a Girl Guide (and before that, a Brownie) I was instructed about the correct way up of the flag. Then, as a teacher, I always had one in my classroom (up the right way of course).
I don't think schools nowadays cover anything about the patron saints, different flags which make up the Union Jack etc.
My husband had to learn all this to pass his Life In The UK test when applying for British Citizenship. Fortunately, I could teach him and he passed.

The Queen has said she was "humbled and deeply touched" by the Platinum Jubilee celebrations held across the UK.

In a "thank you" letter after a concluding pageant in London, she said she remained committed to serving as monarch with the support of her family.

The Queen said despite not being at every event marking her 70-year reign: "My heart has been with you all."

She was joined by three generations of her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the finale of the pageant.

I've worn hearing aids since 2012, Kevin. For a couple of years they got me through in sessions, but more and more I found myself all at sea and it was so upsetting that when I finally decided to pack in the sessions it turned out to be a blessed relief. My main way of trying to be a good session player had been to focus on someone who had a great sense of rhythm and tempo and secretly "play along" with them. Eventually, once the banjos, the strummers and the pickers moved in, I was lost. It's all good, I'm much happier than I was when I was trying to struggle on, and I can still noodle away with the tunes at home.

As for bodhran players, I can't count the number of times I've seen a strummer or melody player who doesn't know the current tune pick up their drum instead and begin to bash. Well if a tune started up that I didn't know I'd shut up and listen to it and try to get it in my head. There's no shame in not playing all the time. If you don't know the tune, you shouldn't be playing the drum along with it. No-one else can do that, can they? "Oh, it's a reel, and I can play along with any reel...". Bollocks!

The problem with most percussion tuition, is that the tutor thinks it is just about teaching patterns of rythym, it is not. , teaching patterns is useful for requiring competence with the tipper or sticks, but the percussionist should sing the tune when practising, and play the tune not a rythym pattern,
example if i was bashing an old goat skin and singing god save the queen, i would need to bang differently from if i was playing singing god bless the prince of wales even though they are both marches

Enjoying (whilst annoyed we can't have similar for English) plenty of good Scottish music on BBC Radio 3 in the mornings this week, as they celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Caledonian Canal.

That's one way the Beeb try to help keep the union together - lots of opportunities for Scots (Radio Alba is another), whilst keeping English culture down/Americanisation up.

I've got a D/G Erica too. Mine is rather battered and 2 treble notes are reduced to single reed. I got mine for Morris dancing but I dropped that and the box in favour of an Irish session I found and mandolin/tenor banjo. I still get my Erica out occasionally but, while I can get some simple Morris tunes out of it, I never got to a stage where I could use it in an Irish session.

I got a B/C box fairly recently as I'd long fancied a try with one. I started with good intentions but it's dropped to somethng I really must put an effort into one day.. I think if you have played tunes in the given key on a harmonica (in my case I had a couple to play with for a while in childhood), playing the straight rows on a D/G instrument will feel quite familiar. Playing say a D scale on a B/C just seems weird to me at the moment.

That's it, Dick. Bashing your drum when you don't know the tune is like a cook pouring chicken gravy on top of a strawberry trifle: "It's only food so what more do you need?"

I'd make a bit of a distinction between bodhrans in sessions (unregulated in general) and bodhrans in bands that play arrangements. Yer drummer is then obliged to conform with what the band has agreed. A drum that dips in and out (like other instruments) can be much more effective than one that is tediously bashed non-stop all the way through. Even so, I'm not keen. A few albums in, one of my favourite Irish bands, Altan, started to use a bodhran player, Jim Higgins I think. To my taste (an important caveat...), not one set was enhanced by that. Another grumble is bodhranistas who have become so "clever" that they can make the drum sound like water glugging out of a bottle or like that thing you can do when you pat your cheek whilst opening and closing your mouth. I won't name names. To my ear that's just ridiculous. I'll take Christy in Planxty or Kevin Conneff in the Chieftains over that any day.

With the BBC receiving major plaudits for its Saturday night Party at the Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, a peak of more than 13M viewers tuned in for the concert, which featured Diana Ross, Nile Rodgers and Queen.

The two-hour long Saturday night extravaganza, which aired from 7.30pm GMT (11.30AM PT), was watched by an average 11.2M audience across the run, becoming the most-watched show of the year so far, according to Barb data supplied by overnights.tv. A share of two-thirds of the British audience watching TV at the time were tuning in to the Party on BBC One.

The figures overall were slightly down on previous major royal occasions, however, such as Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip’s 2021 funeral and the previous Diamond Jubilee in 2012, although the nice weather and Bank Holiday weekend may have had a negative impact on viewing figures.

On Thursday 2 June, the special extended version of the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony, the first day of the Bank Holiday weekend, was watched by a peak of 7.5M in the morning and 5M average – the most-watched of the day. Later that evening, the BBC’s broadcast of the lighting of the beacons to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne hit a peak of 5M with Lighting up the Jubilee.

Meanwhile on Saturday morning, the Platinum Jubilee: Service of Thanksgiving was viewed by 2.8M over three hours in the morning while just over 3M tuned in for Clive Myrie-led documentary The Crown Jewels.

Shows were available on the BBC and coverage was on Sky News, while U.S. audiences were able to watch various offerings on ABC News throughout the Bank Holiday.

I too have enjoyed the abundance of folk music from Scotland on Radio 3 this week. Radio 3 is not in any way a Folk station but regular listeners will know that folk music does get played, and English folk as well. I can think of at least two occasions when Northumberland Small Pipes have been featured in the last month.

Well Bonzo, if I was (sort of) to go into a WAV mode, I might comment that Pantone is a proprietary American colour (or color) system. "Truly British" might have tried to pick a purple from one of the British Standard ranges.

As for purple and royalty. I've seen quite a few people in a shade purple lately. These are people from a Norfolk Council service who have helped getting dad to bed while we are stuck. Hard working carers rather than Royalty. Personally, I'd rather associate the colour with the Swift/Night Owl teams that I would with HM.

Two problems with continuing these music discussions here. Three, actually. WAV is in time out for insisting the UN participate in maintaining the purity of the English race, and he's the one who started with the cittern as somehow a symbol of that purity. Two, if you discuss instruments here, you'll never find it again later when looking for it. And finally (the least of my concerns) it pisses off Bonzo.

Bonus point, the jubilee is over.

I watched some of the YouTube archived videos of things going on to do with the Jubilee and it seemed to be lots of long views of groups of mounted riders approaching via a long straight road to Buckingham Palace (or Windsor - I don't know if they did it at just one or both places?) Slow stuff. Equivalent to paint drying.

Nowt wrong with celebrating English culture as long as you know that all cultures are fluid, evolving creature. Not museum pieces from some mythical rose coloured past. Which past would you choose anyway? Victorian times when we enforced "our" culture on half the world? Pre Norman because you don't want French influence? Pre Roman? It's impossible to have the pure English culture that you keep waffling on about WAV. Instead, just celebrate that we accept Bangladeshi, Polish, Indian, Dutch, Pakistani, Chinese and any other cultures to mix and grow in the petri dish that we call England.

And, yes, your standpoint of wanting to impose rules on which music individual races can make is racist. If you don't want to be called a racist, stop spouting racist dogma.
