Nowt wrong with horseshit, Steve: judicious amounts of it encourage the roses. Sadly, the English rose has been repotted in 100% bullshit, which is why it's suffering die-back.

I get where you’re coming from, Steve, but I do find the spectacle of large groups of smartly-turned-out, well-trained men, women, and animals (especially horses, which I regard as being particularly beautiful creatures), performing intricate manœvres, and the superb musicianship of the assembled military bands, both interesting and attractive.

However, and like you, I have little interest in the over-privileged family in whose name it was all carried out.

No accounting for taste, eh? ;-)

England was a blend of cultures from all over the British empire, WAV, and even prior to that it was far more diverse than you suggest. Have you seen, just as an example, the celebration of the African influence as part of the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian's Wall? People have been mixing cultures with wherever they could travel to since the first caveman showed the tribe in the next valley how he hunts, plants and dances. Your view on keeping cultures to their own geographic areas is not only wrong but has never worked and never will.

...was a blend of cultures from all over the British empire WELL BEFORE THE 1950s...

There is no such thing as "English" culture. Full Stop.

The "English" are a bastard race mixed up from, amongst others, Celts, Romans, Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Normans, Jews from various nations (for example Italy in the 12th century) Germans, Belgians, Huguenots, Afro and Afro Carribean, Irish, Poles, Czechs, Ukraines, Pakinstan, India, China, Kenya, Uganda, Scots, Welsh. (and probably dozens of other groups I have failed to mention)

The culture of the country quite rightly reflects this.

If anyone can find me an "English" man I'll show my bum in Burtons window as we used to say

A devil's advocate is much like a prevaricating villain.
The evil glory may just be a temporary attention indulgence,

I hope.

Ever notice how extraterrestrials solved their race problem?
They mingled and bred until they all turned grey.

QE 2 is 2+ years shy of breaking Louis XIV's all time monarch anywhere reign record (though he was young and didn't take over control for a dozen years or so). Do you think she'll make it to that point? (I read this online and I don't remember where - I don't know if they took into account any of the Asian emperors reigns.)

Don't see why her Maj can't make it beyond her personal century. After all, she now has the keys to her mother's drinks cabinet, and who knows what elixirs *that* contains .... :-) ?

If anyone can break the record Elizabeth can.

Regarding poetry, lets start with something a bit fundamental

We'll do soul later.

There are Folks we can't stand
who make outrageous demands
or considerate soul mates
who share the same fates
around the same time like penicillin.
I can understand
good and bad are more coincidental
than deliberate transcendental
profound crimes by evil villains.
Good is rarely as good as we think
Bad is rarely as bad as it stinks.
The truly bad to the bone
lie in a land of their own.

Bonzo understands men in tights, cod pieces and wool pants in summer.
Bearskin hats are obviously for short dudes.

Or hiding your thermos of tea in while on guard duty, in case there's a thirsty bear taking refuge in your sentry box.

My bearskin-wearing uncle, who was in the changing of the guard at the Palace, etc, was a six-footer. He was a damn good E flat bass player too.
