23 December 2023 23:00 BBC Radio 3 Late Junction

In this special festive edition of Late Junction, we hand over the musical reins to comedian and long-time listener Tom Allen. When not busy with comedy panel shows, hosting The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice or on tour with his award-winning standup, Tom is a keen appreciator of the weird and wonderful in music, and shares some of his sonic favourites with us alongside stories and cheer.

Drawn to things that are melancholic, maudlin or camp, he’s a big fan of renaissance choral music, sea shanties, traditional folk songs, and a new genre he’s coined ‘Medieval Emo’. A Late Junction listener from his early teenage years, he shares some tracks he discovered via the show, as well as other songs close to his heart from the likes of Thomas Tallis, Sufjan Stevens and Kate Bush.

Plus there’s an exclusive mixtape from the legendary jazz collective The Sun Ra Arkestra.

250 years of 'Amazing Grace'. The hymn was written for a New Year service in 1773.

01 January 2023 BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship BBC Sounds Available for 29 days. Featuring a broad variety of arrangements of the famous hymn and reflections from those who’ve performed or adapted it, including Bob Chilcott, Karen Gibson, John Rutter and Will Todd.

Also 08 January 2023 13:15 BBC1 S0ngs of Praise On 1 January 1773, John Newton’s now famous words were first performed in the parish church where he was curate. 250 years on, Claire visits that same church to discover the remarkable story behind the hymn, the extraordinary life of its composer and the reasons for the composition’s enduring power. In Olney, Claire meets local experts who reflect on the life of John Newton, from his early years of debauchery as a sailor and then as a slave trader to his later life as a dedicated clergy man, hymn writer and abolitionist. Claire hears how a moment of epiphany at sea sparked a deep Christian faith that helped him to realise the full horror of his actions and compelled him to spend the rest of his life serving others and striving to abolish the evil of slavery.

Amazing Grace. The Museum of the Bible suggests that the hymn was first sung at the Manor Of Olney rather than the Parish Church. "It was January 1, 1773. John Newton led his congregation down the road from the parish church in Olney, England, to Lord Dartmouth’s Great Hall to sing “new” music not traditionally allowed by the Anglican Church."

The Lordship of Olney; Lord Dartmouth’s great interest in the Evangelical Revival earned him the name of the Psalm Singer, and though Colonial Secretary in 1772–5 and Lord Privy Seal in 1775–82 he found opportunity for interest in the schemes of Newton and for correspondence with the leading members of the seriously-minded society of his day.

The Museum of the Bible; January 1, 2023, is the 250th anniversary of the first time “Amazing Grace” was ever sung. In celebration, Museum of the Bible has launched an online exhibit today. Enjoy a timeline of some of the most pivotal moments in the song’s life and see how each verse of the song corresponds to a part of Newton’s New Year’s Day sermon. Guests can also listen to different historical adaptations of the song through our jukebox feature, experiencing the many verses and tunes that have been part of the hymn.

05 January 2023 15:00 BBC Radio 4 Open Country Folk on the Hills. Then on BBC Sounds for a month.

Folk musician Johnny Campbell is recording an album of songs from the summits and industrial hotspots of northern England. Jez Lowe joins him at Kinder Scout in Derbyshire to celebrate ninety years since the ‘Right to Roam’ movement began and explore the traditional songs of the Peak District.

Jez meets local singer Bella Hardy to hear how her home in Edale has inspired and influenced her work, and writer Roly Smith who can explain the history of Kinder and the 1932 mass trespass. It may be ninety years ago, but for young global folk stars Kate Griffin and Ford Collier of Mishra, the call for a right to roam is still relevant.

They have recorded a version of Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’, a song inspired by the Kinder trespass. Jez meets Kate, Ford, Johnny and Bella to hear how a new generation of musicians are continuing MacColl’s legacy of folk singers fighting for our rights in the countryside.

Open Country St Just in Midwinter broadcast Christmas Eve 2022 Available now (indefinitely?) on BBC Sounds

Helen Mark tries to live in the moment at a deserted cliff edge chapel, hears carols that have deep ties to Cornwall's tin mining heritage, and comes face to face with hell's snarling jaws as she visits the town of St Just in Penwith.

In the heart of the town is the "plen-an-gwari", one of the last of the Cornish medieval amphitheatres built to host a sequence of religious mystery plays, the Ordinalia. Centuries after their suppression, the plays were revived in the 2000s as a community-wide venture that once again brought them, and the "plen", to the centre of community life.

And at the Miner's Chapel we hear how the tin mines which once dominated the area gave rise to a tradition of local carolling that survives to this day, with Alan Cargeeg and his fellow singers.

Broadcast this afternoon on BBC Radio 4. Available to listen to on BBC Sounds

Great Lives Adjoa Andoh on Zora Neale Hurston
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001hfck

Actor Adjoa Andoh has a list of TV, theatre and film credits as long as your arm. She's best known worldwide as Bridgerton's Lady Danbury, and is due to direct - and star in the title role - in a new production of Richard III. Her great life is the 20th century American writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, author of "Their Eyes Were Watching God". An iconic figure in the literature of the jazz age, her name was all but forgotten after her death in 1960, before being pulled back into public consciousness in the US by fellow author Alice Walker in the 1970s.

Adjoa makes the case that we should all know more about Zora, a trailblazer who - on top of her writing career - researched zombies in the Caribbean and helped collect the stories of slavery's last survivors.

this evening, on the anniversary of Rabbie Burns' birthday (and also Ewan MacColl's), BBC Radio Ulster aired a programme about "fellow" songwriter, Lady Nairne. I recognised that name right away, but didn't recognise the name "Carolina Oliphant". I found the programme, immensely interesting, and commend it to you - even though it is mostly talk and a lot of the singing featured is performed in what I would call a parlour song style. Here is an article about the programme "The Secret Bard"

She tells John Wilson about the first time she attended the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1989, aged 13. Standing on the main stage at sunset overlooking the mountains and sea was a defining moment at the start of her career. She also discusses the influence that singer Billy Bragg and Scottish folk rock band Shooglenifty had on her music. Eliza also talks about the impact of the pandemic on the folk music community and the personal loss of her mother.

Knowing that her followers have short memories, Charlie Dore waited until the last moment to send us a newsletter:
Tonight at 9pm for the first time we’ll be playing live on Radio 2’s Folk Show with the now approaching legendary status Mark Radcliffe at the helm. We’re very honoured as the live sessions are a more rare event these days…three songs and a chat with Lord Radcliffe of Bolton. Hurrah!

The Hills are Alive! Commoners Choir in Calderdale - 2 Feb 2023 15:00
Ramblings -
Boff Whalley is best known for Tubthumping with the band Chumbawamba but now he’s a core member of the Leeds based Commoners Choir which he founded. They sing about the world around them, about inequality and injustice, and they also love to walk.
Cath Long, a fellow member, wrote to Ramblings to ask Clare to join them on a hike in the South Pennines near Todmorden in Calderdale, West Yorkshire.
So, on a chilly, wet and blustery Saturday in early January, they met by the Shepherd’s Rest pub and headed into the hills to ramble and sing.
Boff created a choir manifesto, and one aim was to 'rehearse until we're brilliant' and they really are. Their Skelmanthorpe Flag Song (https://youtu.be/SIsryw_3gfk), which they performed at the historic Basin Stone, was heard by fellow walkers at least two miles down in the valley. On a circular hike, which began and ended at the pub, they stopped off at Gaddings Dam, often described as the highest beach in the UK, where some choir members took the plunge and sang out from the wind-blown waves of the reservoir.

BBC Sounds Radio 4 7 February 2023 In Time to the Music; The House of the Rising Sun

The third episode explores the journey of The House of the Rising Sun - was it based on a 17th-century broadside ballad that travelled from northern England to the Appalachian Mountains in the US? Some version of it or a similar ballad passed down through generations until it was captured in a recording by celebrated musicologist Alan Lomax in the 1930s. It was a key song in the folk revival of the 1960s before becoming a hit for The Animals in 1964. The programme also examines other music that has travelled through time.

Featuring musicologists Professor Laura Tunbridge, Professor Richard Dumbrill, singer Ian Shaw and pianist and educator Gareth Williams. Written and Presented by Andrew McGibbon

A Jig into History - 2023
Sunday Feature - R3
With a copy of Kemp’s recollection of his feat ‘Kemps Nine Daies Wonder’ under her arm, Professor Nandini Das takes to the streets of London to examine the impact of Kemp’s endeavour and explain why it had as much to do with merchant venturing as it did street and theatrical entertainment.
She’s joined by scholars Tracey Hill, Daisy Black and the former Olympian Peter Radford, all of whom believe that while Shakespeare’s legacy endures through a clear line of English Theatrical tradition, Kemp’s journey should also be seen as an early example of the enduring tradition of ordinary folk making sporting endeavour and entertainment pay.

Government Song Woman - Sun 5th March 2023
Sunday Feature - R3
American musician Rhiannon Giddens investigates the fascinating life and recordings of the folk song collector Sidney Robertson Cowell. Travelling thousands of miles all over the US in the depression era, Cowell was willing to track down songs in unlikely places, once writing "I don't scare easily." She spent a night riding in a hearse in Wisconsin just to question the driver and hear his songs, walked up mountains to record lumberjacks and traditional Appalachian singers and poled three miles downriver after dark on a makeshift raft to find a famed fiddler in his goldmine in California.

Listening to her recordings is like travelling back in time; they capture the voices of so many different nationalities that emigrated to the US, but she also made recordings on the Aran Islands in Ireland. During her lifetime Cowell was marginalised like so many women collectors of that period, but in this celebration of her recordings and observations, Giddens finally gives her work the attention it deserves.

With indebted thanks to the American Folklife Center archive in the Library of Congress who hold the collection of Sidney Robertson Cowell's recordings and to the following contributors who have done so much to bring her work to light:

Cathy Hiebert Kerst, folklorist and archivist who catalogued Sidney's recordings of the WPA California Folk Project.

Sheryl Kaskowitz, scholar of American music and author of forthcoming book: The Music Unit: FDR's Hidden New Deal Program that Tried to Save America from the Great Depression—One Song at a Time.

Jim P Leary, a folklorist and scholar of Scandinavian studies, and a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, author of Folksongs of Another America.

Dr. Deirdre Ní Chonghaile writer, researcher and musician (she plays fiddle with Rhiannon at the end of the programme) who has written about the collecting work of Sidney Robertson Cowell on the Aran Islands in the 1950s.

Robert Cochrane, Professor of English and folklore specialist at the University of Arkansas.

Peggy Seeger, folksinger.

Sunday Feature Metal City BBC Radio 3 Sunday 5 February 2023

Gregory Leadbetter’s poem traces this story from the discovery of ore in the Staffordshire hills, through the Staffordshire Hoard, the Birmingham Pieces from the Knights Templar, the establishment and development of Birmingham as a great metalworking centre becoming the Toyshop of the World, the development of steam power by Matthew Boulton, being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the City of a Thousand Trades, all the way to the birth of Heavy Metal Music.

Vocal Music:
‘Ommer ‘Ommer ‘Ommer – a nail maker’s verse set to music by Caroline Price. Sung by Stream of Sound.
Final Chorus of Mendelssohn’s Oratorio Elijah, famously premiered in August 1846 in Birmingham’s Town Hall.
Song of Steam – a Birmingham broadside ballad set to an old Hymn tune and arranged by Caroline Price. Sung by Stream of Sound.

A fairly folky poetry programme from 2020.
Features Kathryn and her father Mike Tickell.

The Dam - available for ~4 weeks
Poetry Extra

Award-winning writer David Almond tells a timely true story about the flooding of Northumberland's Kielder Valley 40 years ago to make a dam, and the music and poetry which lie submerged within us all

This had been one of the wildest corners of the county - a place of farms and homesteads, a school and a stretch of railway. It had also been a place of music and song, dancing and legends. Now it was all to be flooded in order to create the largest artificial lake in the UK.

David tells of the father and daughter who visited the abandoned homes on the eve of the sealing of the dam, playing one last song before the diggers moved in, the valley was submerged and they were lost forever.

"He woke her early. 'Bring your fiddle,' he said. The day was dawning. Into the valley they walked....."

In a programme resonant with birdsong, running streams, sighing trees, leaping salmon and first-person testimonial, this is a story about the reservoirs of music, poetry and song in us all.

Featuring Northumbrian folk music, with additional fiddle-playing by Georgia Russelll, the programme culminates in a revelation by David about the identity of the protagonists in this haunting story.

Based around David Almond's picture book, The Dam, with illustrations by Levi Pinfold, published by Walker Studio.

With additional fiddle-playing by Georgia Russell

Producer: Beaty Rubens

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2020.

BBC Radio 3 Sunday Feature 18:45 Sunday 09 April 2023 Please Mr Lacey, Let Me Work Your Lovely Machine

Bruce Lacey defies categorisation. He painted, made sculptures, films, installations and was a performance artist in the 60s. Roger Law goes in search of an artistic enigma.

Lacey's robots appeared on the Fairport Convention LP What We Did On Our Holidays (1969) in the song "Mr Lacey", written by Ashley Hutchings. The song is about Lacey, and the noise of his robots (which he brought into the studio) contribute the "instrumental break".

Please Mr Lacey, let me work your loving machine
Please Mr Lacey, let me work your loving machine
Will you let me control the handles,
You know it's the best thing I've ever seen
