Subject: BS: Arbroath? From: leeneia Date: 26 Aug 23 - 06:57 PM How does one pronounce Arbroath, which is a town in Scotland? It seems that the goodly abbot of Aberbethrock, who hung the bell on the Inchcape Rock, was actually the abbot of Arbroath. |
Subject: RE: BS: Arbroath? From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Aug 23 - 07:08 PM Arbroath. Just as it looks. Two syllables. Though it's ten times better if you say "Arbroath smokies..." |
Subject: RE: BS: Arbroath? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Aug 23 - 03:00 AM My mate Joe, an archetypal dour Yorkshireman, when describing a dull place used to say "like Arbroath without the smokies" |
Subject: RE: BS: Arbroath? From: weerover Date: 27 Aug 23 - 06:33 AM To rhyme with "both". Be aware we almost always pronounce our "r"s clearly in Scotland. |
Subject: RE: BS: Arbroath? From: leeneia Date: 29 Aug 23 - 10:21 PM A few years ago we were at the festival in Portsoy, where Arbroath smokies were being sold by people from Arbroath, and the DH asked how to pronounce it. The answer was a surprise, but he doesn't remember what it was. That was a delightful festival, by the way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Arbroath? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Sep 23 - 07:20 PM Slightly more emphasis on the second syllable, so Ar-BROATH rather than AR-broath. |
